In AD865 an army of Vikings sailed across the North Sea. This time they wanted to conquer land rather than just raid it. Watch the clip about Viking invaders and settlers and answer the questions below: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zhx4q6f - from 1:30 - 4:38

1. How many Vikings came on this attack? 2. How was this attack different from the previous

ones? 3. Who were they fighting against? 4. Why did they attack Repton? 5. How did the Vikings get to Repton? 6. How did the Vikings use the church?

Over several years the army battled through northern England, taking control of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria, East Anglia and most of Mercia. By AD874, almost all the kingdoms had fallen to the Vikings. All except for Wessex, which was ruled by Alfred the Great. King Alfred beat the Viking army in battle but wasn't able to drive the Vikings out of Britain. Watch> http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zhx4q6f - from 6:50 - 8:06 After years of fighting the Vikings and Alfred made a peace agreement. But even after this agreement, fighting went on for many more years. An imaginary dividing line was agreed to run across England, from London in the south towards Chester in the north west. The Anglo-Saxon lands were to the west and the Viking lands, known as the Danelaw, were roughly to the east.

By the end of the 9th century the Vikings came to Scotland to raid and settle. It is interesting that the Vikings settled so quickly in Scotland and Northern and east Ireland, and slower in England. Certainly resistance was just as fierce in Scotland and Ireland as it was in England. Watch > http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/z23g9j6 Why do you think we know more details about the Vikings in England?

Activity 1: (See below) Put the pictures in order to show the sequence of events of the Viking invasions of Scotland and England. Now think of a sentence to go with each picture to explain the event. the animal and write the French word under it on small squared pieces of paper. Once created, shuffle the cards and place them face down on a table. Find someone to play with you and take turns selecting and turning over two cards. Say the French words when you do so! If the two cards match, you may take the cards and win a point. If they don’t match, leave them where they were and turn them back over, ready for your partner to have a go. Keep playing until all cards have been paired up, then total your scores!

Multiplication War Card Game: How to Play

1. Remove the Jacks, Kings and Queens from a regular deck of cards.

2. Shuffle.

3. Players place cards face down in a pile.

4. At the count of three, both players flip over their first card.

5. The first person to say the product of the 2 cards receives both cards and puts them in a separate pile.

6. If both players say the answer at the same time, the cards are put in the middle of the table.

7. The next player to win the "flip" gets the cards in the middle of the table in addition to the cards just played.

8. The winner is the person with the most cards at the end of play.

Other Variations:

1. Each kid turns over two cards and multiplies his or her own cards together. Whoever has the highest product, wins both sets of cards. The winner has

the most cards at the end.

2. Do not remove the Joker, Jack, Queen and King in the deck. Instead, assign the following values to them:

Joker = 14

King = 13

Queen = 12

Jack = 11

Play continues as outlined above, or play your favourite version.
