Nurse’s NotesURINARY TRACT INFECTIONS

A urinary tract infection (UTI)occurs when bacteria or germsfrom one place enter the urinarytract and cause an infection. Theurinary tract consists of thekidneys, ureters, bladder, andurethra. The most common site ofinfection is in the lower urinarytract, the bladder and urethra. Thebladder stores urine until it isflushed out of the body throughthe urethra. If the bacteria aren’tflushed out with the urine, aninfection can develop andpossibly spread up into thekidney. UTIs are more common inwomen than in men, althougholder males with enlargedprostates that block the flow ofurine are also prone to infections. As we get older the nerve endingsin our bladders lose their functionand we may not feel anysymptoms of an infection until weare very ill. Symptoms to watchfor are: burning during urination, frequency, cloudy or smelly urine, and sometimes a mild fever. Theseindicate a lower tract infection(bladder). Symptoms of an upperurinary tract infection (kidney),come on quickly and may includehigh fever with chills, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, backpain, and sometimes confusion ordelirium. CARE: * See a doctor assoon as possible * Take anyprescribed medicine as soon asprescribed and finish all the

medicine * Drink plenty of fluidsPREVENTION: * For women andgirls, always wipe from front toback, (not back to front) * Urinateoften (don’t hold and over extendbladder) * Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, clear sodas, andfruit juices. Cranberry juice hasbeen shown to help preventUTIs. When to call the Doctor: *Fever or burning sensation thatdoesn’t go away or symptomsworsen after 48 hrs on anantibiotic * If you begin toexperience confusion ordelirium * Back pain, high fever, vomiting, or chills develop *Abdominal pain develops orgets worse

Cold CareColds and allergies can be

tough on your nose. “All thatblowing and wiping can chafe thedelicate skin of the nostrils,” saysdermatologist Kenneth Howe onwww.Health.com. He recommendsusing extra-soft tissues and coatingthe edges of your nostrils withpetroleum jelly before goingto bed.

The Joy of PassoverPassover is an eight-day

festival celebrated in the earlyspring (March or April), fromthe 15th through the 22nd ofthe Hebrew month Nissan.

The holiday celebrates thefreedom of the Israelites fromslavery in ancient Egypt. Thebook of Exodus tells how Godsent Moses to deliver a messageto Pharaoh to free the Jewishslaves. When Pharaoh refused,God sent a series of plagues toEgypt. The final plague was thedeath of all the firstborn. However, God “passed over” thehouses of Jews, sparing thosefamilies’ firstborn.

Avoiding chametz, orleavened grain, is an importantpart of Passover. This traditioncame about because the Jewsfleeing Egypt were in a hurryand didn’t have time to let theirbread rise. Unleavened bread, ormatzah, is eaten during the daysof the festival.

A Seder meal is held the firsttwo nights of Passover andfollows a series of rituals from abook called the Haggadah.Blessings are given, and specificfoods are eaten.

The story of the first Passoveris read from the Haggadah, prompted by the youngestperson asking a set of questions, beginning with “Why is thisnight different from all othernights?”
