• Locate the map you picked up on your way in the door.
• Turn to page 86 and use the map on that page to help you label the 13 original colonies on your map. (be careful of Maine, it wasn’t one of the original colonies.)
• What colony did the area now known as Maine belong to?
MASSACHUSSETTS
• 1620 - Plymouth is settled
by the Pilgrims seeking
religious freedom.
• The Mayflower Compact
was signed before the
people left the ship. In the
Mayflower compact the
people agree to abide by
the laws made by the
group.
MASSACHUSSETTS
• The Puritans here not only governed the
church, but the state as well. People
required by law to attend church. Later on
people elect a representative assembly to
make their laws for them.
• Shipping and trade are the foundation of
the economy
RHODE ISLAND
• 1636 - The colony is
founded by Roger
Williams who has
been banished from
Massachusetts
because he
disagrees with the
Puritan Ministers.
• Allows religious
freedom for all people
NEW HAMPSHIRE
• 1639 Settled by Puritans ministers
unhappy with Massachusetts ministers
• Allowed much more freedom of religion
than Massachusetts

CONNECTICUT
• 1639 This colony is established by people
dissatisfied with the Puritan ministers in
Massachusetts.

governed. These are the original Fundamental
Orders of Connecticut.

NEW YORK
• In the 1600s the Dutch
settled New York calling it
New Netherlands. The
Duke of York takes from
the Dutch in 1664. New
Amsterdam, one of the
Dutch settlements later
becomes New York.
• New York eventually has
a colonial assembly
which makes laws for the
colony

• 1681 The king gives
land to William Penn
as payment for a debt
he owed his father.
• Penn establishes
Pennsylvania as a

• He allows the colonies to have their own
assemblies.
• Farming basis of economy they raised
corn, wheat, vegetables and dairy cattle.
They also had tradesmen (cobblers,
silversmiths, and blacksmiths.)

• 1664 The Duke of
York gave part of his
lands to his friends
• They tried to attract
settlers by offering
religious freedom
and a representative
assembly.

the Swedish people,
called New Sweden.

• 1607 -Jamestown is
settled in 1607 by people
from Great Britain They
were looking for gold,
and other economic
resources. In 1619 they
started to import Africans
to work on tobacco
plantations
• Church of England is
official religion. The
colonists are required to
attend church

In 1632 a charter was

• Real governing power was retained by
England until later on when they were
given some local control over their

• 1732 - First
established by James
Oglethorpe in 1732.
He wanted to create a
colony as a place for
debtors and the poor
so they could make a
fresh start.
• It had religious
freedom for all

• Had an assembly to help make the laws
• Warm humid climate good for growing
tobacco, cotton, rice and indigo.
• The English hoped it would created to
provide a buffer against Spanish and
French intrusion from the South
