The Age of Exploration had many causes and effects on civilizations throughout the world. The Age of Exploration is when Europeans began to explore looking for raw materials and trade routes in the late 1400’s. They did this to make more profits to become powerful countries. Spanish explorers were known as conquistadors. Europeans started charters to travel by ship to the Americas. As the Europeans explored and arrived in the western hemisphere, they encountered many different native groups. These interactions had positive and negative effects. A positive effect was new foods were introduced to both groups. The new foods in their diets improved their health. A negative effect was the Europeans brought dangerous diseases. One of the dangerous diseases was smallpox that killed many Native Americans. This transfer of goods and diseases is known as the Columbian Exchange. The Columbian Exchange is only one of the many effects of the Age of Exploration.

Another effect of the Age of Exploration was the new settlements established in the Americas. These settlements were set up as colonies. A colony is used to make profits by controlling natural resources. Many natural resources were very profitable from the Americas, some examples are coffee, cotton, wood, and tobacco. These items were naturally able to grow and be transported due to the geography of the Americas. The Europeans set up plantations to create profits. This system used forced laborers, known as slaves. The slaves were treated brutally and considered property in the eyes of the Europeans. The colonies became very important to the Europeans and they protected them by any means necessary. The interactions between the Natives and the Europeans was very bloody over the control of the land. Slavery and the bloody conflicts between the Natives and Europeans are just a few of the negative impacts the Age of Exploration had on the Americas.
