Highly Variable Irradiance due to Intermittent Cloud Cover

Process plant or airport / data center – Entire generation gets self consumed

Working principle Grid Connect self generation and consumption system Life Cycle 25 years

SMART GRID

Page 13: Bellva AIRPORT SMART POWER PLANT R2

AIRPORT SMART POWER PLANT&

DATA CENTER

RELIABILITY & CONTINUITY SOLUTION

ADVANTAGES OF GRID CONNECTED PV SYSTEM

Less losses as battery storage – inversion is absent Ideal for self consumption where end use facility has a steady

load over the day and over seasons Net metering – export surplus solar energy generation back to

the grid offset against energy drawn at other times Has much better cost economics for investment than off grid

DISADVANTAGES OF GRID CONNECTED PV SYSTEM

× Dependency on grid always; no grid – no generation × In self consumption installations – provides only daytime energy –

need to buy from grid in night Grid

Page 14: Bellva AIRPORT SMART POWER PLANT R2

AIRPORT SMART POWER PLANT&

DATA CENTER

RELIABILITY & CONTINUITY SOLUTION

ADVANTAGES OF OFF GRID PV SYSTEM

Can store the energy which can be used during non sunshine hours (night time / cloudy days)

No dependency on grid, electrification in areas where grid absent is possible

Battery storage can provide a buffer between erratic generation and consumption patterns – useful in self consumption markets where end customer load patterns are varying a lot / seasonal

DISADVANTAGES OF OFF GRID PV SYSTEM

× Lower efficiency – battery storage and inversion means higher losses

× Needs higher maintenance – battery upkeep × Poor economics – battery life of ca. 5 years (average) – need to

inject capex periodically

IndiaCochin International Airport (CIAL), serving the city ofKochi in the Indian state of Kerala, is the busiest andlargest airport in the state and the fourth-busiest in thecountry [Airport Code: COK] (Figure 1). The airportserves more than 5 million people annually. A modest100-kWp solar PV plant was installed on the rooftop ofits Arrival Terminal Block in 2013, and capacity wasgradually increased to 1.1 MWp with additionalprojects expected in the next few years. More recently,CIAL added a large 12- MWp capacity PV plant on 45acres near the International Cargo complex.

Components for the large scale project included PVmodules of 265 Wp capacity and inverters of 1 MWcapacity. The energy output of the new plant is 48 MWhper day in addition to the existing plant’s production of 4MWh per day. The total output of 52 MWh per day, orabout 18 GWh per year, is sufficient to meet all thepower requirements of the airport. The CIAL structure isa grid-connected system without battery storage. Apower banking module was negotiated with the KeralaState Electricity Board (KSEB). CIAL provides power to theKSEB grid during daylight hours and buys power backwhen needed (especially at night).

United StatesSolar plants of various sizes are already operating atairports across the U.S. Tampa Electric installed a 2-MWp system at the Tampa International Airport . Acanopy of solar panels on the top floor of a parkinggarage began generating electricity for customers andshade for parking patrons in February 2016. It’s TampaElectric’s first large-scale solar power plant. The largestsolar array in Minnesota is at the Minneapolis-St. PaulAirport where a 3-MWp system was switched on inDecember 2015. Its 8,705 solar panels are expected tosupply 20 percent of the electricity used in TerminalOne

The San Diego International Airport is currently in themidst of a solar PV project with more than 3-MWpcurrently online and operational. Once fully completed, the system will produce 5.5 MWp of solar capacity for theairport. In its first year of operation, it is expected togenerate nearly 9,200 megawatt hours of electricity –enough power to offset a projected 10 to 13 percent ofthe airport’s energy needs.
