Why I want to be a scientist competition Year 7

At the start of this term Y7 classes were asked to take part in a regional competition called 'Why I want to be a Scientist'. They had to write an essay on how they could change the world with their scientific inventions.

2 students from Bellerive were highly commended on their ideas and have been awarded certificates for their excellent entries.

Emma Sanders wrote about inventing an animal collar that could analyse the feelings of animals so that she could communicate with them better.Sophie Fletcher wrote about an owl-vision eyepiece that she would like to invent to give humans eyesight as good as owls in the dark.

Year 9's Mardi Gras

Miss Doolan’s Year 9 French class enjoyed celebrating “Mardi Gras” or Fat Tuesday on the 9th February. The name Fat Tuesday comes from the ancient custom of parading a fat ox through Paris on this day. The ox was to remind the people that they were not allowed to eat meat during Lent.

Bellerive students find their voice

The school Choir took part in a performing project arranged by Culture Liverpool in December. The Choir sang a programme of Christmas Music besides the Poppies Weeping Willow Exhibition outside St. George’s Hall. Some parents kindly supported us during their lunch hour and many visitors and locals stopped to listen to the girls sing.

A small group of students from the Music GCSE groups and Choir took part in a Gospel Music workshop at Hope University Workshop lead by expert singer, leader and composer Tyndale Thomas MBE. The students joined students from other local schools to form a big four-part harmony Gospel Choir. Some of our students also sang in the solo groups. It was a truly inspirational afternoon and all students experienced singing in a new style led by an expert Gospel singer.

Former Bellerive Student Delivers BBC Journalism Training to Year 8

Twenty five year 8 students attended a training session with a BBC journalist at the beginning of February. Sophie Brougham, a former Bellerive student now working for the BBC, came into school to help prepare the girls take to part in the BBC News School Report 2016.

The girls, who were in 8T, 8M, 8S and 8J, learned how real journalists work, investigating how to find news, research stories and interview people. They are now working on how to write their stories, in preparation for News Day.

Sophie, who thoroughly enjoyed the experience, said, 'It was lovely to visit my old school and work with such an enthusiastic group of students. I look forward to seeing what they come up with.’ Students will be linking their stories to the BBC website on Thursday 10th March.

ParisBy Matilda Meaghan, 9J

After the half term holiday I was fortunate enough to be taken on a school trip to Paris for five days.

We started the first day at Notre Dame cathedral followed by the Eiffel Tower which I thought was one of the best parts of the trip. We took the lift up to the very top floor, the views were amazing. However, the lift was very scary! After sitting on the glass floor we decided to walk all the way down. It took ages. We then took a boat ride on the river Seine where we saw all the beautiful sights of Paris.

On day two we went to the Palace of Versailles where we visited the gardens which were incredible. My friends and I got lost in the maze! After that we had a tour around the palace which was huge and very interesting. There was a lot of gold. We then went to Versailles town and I had some lunch at the French Maccies which was called Quick, miam miam!

On the third day everyone was most excited because we were going shopping. First we visited the Sacre Cœur and saw the artists painting in this area. We bought lots of gifts for

our friends and family. Here I got a funny portrait of myself and one of my brother. Then we wandered down the Champs Elysées.

All of us wanted to go to Sephora for makeup! We then went into as many other shops as we could, it was great fun. After that we walked to the Louvre. I was surprised to see the Mona Lisa painting was so small! After seeing Mona we went back to the hotel to get glammed up for the evening meal out. Unfortunately the coach broke down so we couldn’t go the surprise meal which was at the Hard Rock café. Instead we went to a local French bistro which was lovely. I had a burger and chips (I even ordered in French!). But some of us ordered duck by mistake!

On the last day we left at 7 in the morning for a long coach journey home which was very tiring and we all fell asleep. We had a fab time!

A’ Level Applied Scientists visit Formby National Trust Reserve

Bellerive FCJ Year 13 Applied Scientists visited the sand dune system at Formby in the autumn term to complete ecological investigations and to study the effects of urban development on the area.

The production of this portfolio of work forms a key part of the assessment in year 13. The Applied Science GCE is a popular course in the 6th form at Bellerive FCJ and it allows our students to attain a high grade in science through the more vocational route.

An Applied Science Level 3 course will be offered again in September 2016 when we move onto the AQA Level 3 Certificate in Applied Science and current year 11 pupils may be interested in taking a science course which is 33.3% portfolio based.

In December year 8 wrapped up warmly and enjoyed a busy day at Chester Zoo.

Year 8 pupils had been studying feeding and the environment during their lessons in science last term and this visit allowed them to observe the animals close up and explore these areas first hand. Daisy Tarbuck also had the opportunity to view her adopted penguin.

Year 8 pupils were asked to produce an information sheet after their visit and the best were awarded with prizes in the end of term assembly. The prizes were awarded to Jessica Hazelwood 8A on the Rothschild giraffe and Faye Miller 8T on the conservation of the tiger.

The new Sixth Form Buidling

Our new sixth form and performing arts building overlooking Sefton Park is no longer a pipe-dream and as these pictures show, it is fast becoming a reality. The building is now watertight and work is intensifying to have it ready for us to move into by June 2016.

We were delighted to take another group of Y11 students to the site in February to see how work was progressing. Students were left with a real sense of the scale of the project and were impressed with the views from the 3rd floor. Hopefully they will be the first occupants of the building in September when they commence sixth form studies.

Our thanks go to Morgan Sindall, the main contractors, for organising the visit and welcoming the students into the world of engineering and construction.

Swimmers in Year 7

We have 2 very talented and successful swimmers in Year 7, they both swim at Garston Swimming club and have achieved at least 17 medals and trophies betweeen them in the last couple of months.

They have recently completed at regional level in Lancashire and sometimes in classes above their age group. Lily-Anna and Emily prepared an assembly for Year 7 and shared their achievements with the yeargroup. Lily-Anna and Emily shared with us the dedication and training required to be so successful.
