elcomeAs the Event Co- Chairs

for the 2014 Bellefonte Victorian Christmas(BVC)

on behalf of Historic Bellefonte, Inc. and the BVC Committee we would like to welcome you to the 33rd Annual Bellefonte Victorian Christmas celebration.

This holiday event has been one of our community’s most cherished Christmas traditions. Generations of local adults and children have grown up participating in concerts, dressing in Victorian-period dress, and they continue to build lasting memories by taking part in this annual tradition year after year. One of the committee Co-Chairs has a plaque on the wall of her home that states “Memories Are Made in Bellefonte.” It’s these memories that have kept all of us focused on what is good for the event and the community as a whole. We wanted to create an event that everyone from every economic background could enjoy, an event for all those who visit to have a grand time as they build memories during their stay in beautiful “Victorian Bellefonte.”

As we assumed this responsibility we wanted each visitor to enjoy the festivities in the downtown area or close proximity so that once our visitors reach the downtown area they could easily walk or ride to every venue and not worry about where to park or if they would have enough time to enjoy all that is offered. We also want all who visit to spend time in our fine shops, eat in our restaurants, stay in our beautiful B&B’s, visit the Bellefonte Art Museum and the Historical Library, and soak up the history and architecture while enjoying the event. We would hope that this Special Guide will help you take advantage of all the venues and activities the event has to offer.

This year we would like to again welcome one of the newest venues, United Way’s “Festival of Trees.” Make sure you take the time to catch the special FREE “Festival of Trees” shuttle at the High School or on the Diamond in front of the Courthouse to visit this winter wonderland of trees at the Central PA Institute of Science and Technology.

Our greatest joy throughout our experience this year has been working with the best group

of individuals that we have ever worked with on any project. The members of the Bellefonte Victorian Christmas Committee are hardworking, tireless, and selfless individuals who care about the community as much if not more than we do.

We have also found joy as we have worked and felt the support from businesses, professionals, individuals, shop keepers, restaurateurs, and community organizations who have not only worked in a cooperative effort but have aided the event financially. This community as a whole has helped to make this event what it has become this year and every year.

We would also like to thank our umbrella organization, Historic Bellefonte, Inc., the Bellefonte Borough, and the Bellefonte School District for their support before, during, and after the event. What a joy it is to live in a community so diverse that we can all work together for the common good. And last but not least we could not have done any of this without the support of our spouses and families and all those who visit “Victorian Bellefonte” at the holiday season.

It our hope, whether a local resident or an out of town visitor, that you all will feel welcomed, enjoy the event, have a grand time, and a wonderful holiday season. We would also hope that you will not only want to come back year after year to enjoy the Bellefonte Victorian Christmas Celebration, but that you will want to visit beautiful “Victorian Bellefonte” for years to come no matter what the season to build your own lasting “Memories That Are Made in Bellefonte”

Happy Christmas and God Bless Everyone!

Bellefonte Victorian Christmas • December 12–14, 2014 6

By Sandie Corbin BiddleThe good people of Bellefonte have

kept the Christmas spirit alive for more than three decades – presenting Bellefonte Victorian Christmas and celebrating the holiday with joy and good cheer. The town’s Victorian beginnings are evident from the ornate decorations to the costumed townsfolk, with a backdrop of period architecture that distinguishes this historic county seat.

As you make your way to the Bellefonte Elementary School for the opening ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Friday, December 12, you’ll hear the Bellefonte Community Band playing on the front steps. As you ascend, you’ll be greeted by Mr. Charles Dickens & Company, whose talented members you’ll encounter all weekend long – caroling, entertaining, and hosting Saturday evening’s Dickens of a Dinner Party.

Enter the school for an evening of local entertainment, including the Nittany Knights barbershop group, Bellefonte Elementary grade school choir, St. John’s Elementary school choir, and others. A cookie and hot chocolate reception follows, hosted by Bellefonte Moose Lodge #206.

Touring the TownYou are invited to explore our town,

visit our shops, dine in our restaurants, and partake of festive and meaningful events that will hark you back to a gentler time – if only just for the weekend. You may tour five of Bellefonte’s most gracious homes, beautifully decorated for the season. The Bellefonte Women’s Club Homes Tour is a highlight of the weekend – a self-guided

tour of historic residences between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, December 13. Tickets and tour maps are available in advance at Plumb’s Drug Store, Victorian Rose, Woodring’s Floral Gardens in Bellefonte and State College, and the Train Station in Bellefonte. Tickets will be available the day of the tour at the HBI booth in the YMCA and at each home.

What better way to see our historic town than via a horse-drawn carriage

ride! For just $7.50 for person, children five

and under free, you may experience the

slower pace of the Victorian era. Rides depart the Brockerhoff on Allegheny Street

between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday

and Sunday, and tickets can be purchased

in advance from that location. If you desire a carriage ride to your Friday evening dinner reservation or the opening ceremony at the Elementary School, please contact [email protected] to make reservations.

If history and architecture intrigue you, a Walking Tour of the Historic District departs from the Centre County Courthouse on the diamond at 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, December 13 and 14.

While you’re out and about, stop in at the Diamond Deli and see the astounding array of gingerbread houses that were created for this year’s contest. Winners will be announced at the opening ceremonies and will be on display in the window at 103 North Allegheny Street through December 19.

locations this year. A lovely place to buy handmade gifts, The Victorian Christmas Arts & Crafts Show takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Bellefonte YMCA on High Street and at the Bellefonte Middle School, where there is free parking and a shuttle stop for other weekend event venues. There will be food vendors at each location as well.

Besides dozens of lovely downtown shops, special gift-buying opportunities abound. The Bellefonte Art Museum on 133 North Allegheny Street hosts local artisans who will be displaying and selling their works. The Centre County Library is holding a used book, CD, and DVD sale on Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event itself benefits from sales of the Victorian Christmas ornaments and historic building placemat sales, available at the HBI booth at the YMCA.

For the Little OnesTis the season for children, indeed!

Santa himself hosts breakfast at Lambert Hall on Blanchard Street from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Children are invited to the Victorian Christmas Children’s

Party for free crafts and activities thanks to our sponsor Historic Bellefonte, Inc. The Bellefonte Kiwanis hosts Breakfast with Santa at the same time and place, with a full breakfast available for $6 for adults and $3 for children.

Santa proceeds in grand style to the Santa House on the diamond in front of the court house, arriving at 11:45 a.m. Saturday. He’ll be heralded by the Bellefonte High School Brass Band. The big guy will be available at his Santa House from noon to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday to hear wishes and pose for photos.

A Child’s Victorian Tea is a way for them to experience an old-fashioned formal gathering as it was a century ago. The setting is the Bellefonte Arts Museum on 133 North Allegheny Street. There are three sittings – at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and again at 2 p.m. Sunday. The fee is just $8 per child and parents need to accompany them. Because of the event’s popularity and limited seating, reservations are necessary. Phone 814-355-4280.

Take the kids to the arts & crafts sale at the middle school. There are children’s activities and crafts there, plus the model train displays that everyone will find fascinating. There are children’s storytimes and crafts at the Centre County Library and Historical Museum as well.

Breaking Bread TogetherThe whole family would enjoy Dinner

with Dickens Saturday evening at the Bellefonte Moose Lodge #206 at 125 North Spring Street. The bountiful pasta buffet will satisfy all, while Mr. Charles Dickens and his band of merry characters encourage parlor games, and present skits and live music.

Community Choir Concert Sunday Evening

The grand finale and most-awaited Christmas concert of the season, the Bellefonte Victorian Christmas Community Choir Concert, never ceases to amaze, entertain, and inspire. Miriam Locklin, director, has a fine repertoire planned, including guest musicians and singers, The Heritage Singers, and Bellefonte High School Select Choir Members. The cookie and punch reception is provided by the Bellefonte

Moose Lodge #206. It’s at 7:30 p.m. at the Bellefonte High School Theatre on East Bishop Street – a fitting finale to the Bellefonte Victorian Christmas weekend. Get there early for a good seat. The concert is free, but

donations are gladly accepted at the door.

Longtime fans of Bellefonte Victorian Christmas have already begun their collection of commemorative ornaments. These limited-edition baubles feature a photo of an historic Bellefonte landmark. The 2014 ornament pictures The Garman Opera House. This striking photo was taken by Cecil Houser II and the ornaments cost $15 each. They are available before the event weekend at Pure Imagination, CO2, and the Bellefonte Intervalley Chamber of Commerce at the train station. They will be sold at the HBI booth at the YMCA the event weekend.

Mr. Houser’s photos also adorn the Bellefonte Historic Buildings placemats. The latest offerings include The Garman Opera House, Match Factory, Bellefonte Street-scapes, The Gamble Mill, Café on the Park, the Centre County Court House, and

the Miles-Hume Home which now houses the Centre County Historical Museum. The placemats are available for $5 each or four for $15. These will be available before the event at the train station, and at the HBI booth at the YMCA on event weekend.

Historic Bellefonte, Inc. serves as the umbrella organization for the Bellefonte Victorian Christmas event.

Welcome to the Bellefonte Intervalley Area. We hope you

enjoy all our area has to offer and invite you to drop by our visitor’s center in the historic Bellefonte Train Station for a copy of our historic walking tour and the latest information on what to do and see.

Winter is a great time to visit Bellefonte. Take part in our signature special event, Victorian Christmas, and perhaps you will meet the Ghost of Christmas Past in person. The days may be shorter but there is still plenty of time for all manner of outdoor adventures. Take a ride on the Santa Express train excursion, for example, or simply a crisp and invigorating walk through our Victorian Streets, where you can hear the courthouse clock chime.

When it is time to come in from the cold you can warm up with hot coffee, tea, soup or a hearty meal at one of our great local restaurants. There is also lots to do inside. Visit the Pure Imagination Toy Store (Christmas is just around the corner, you know) stop by the American Philatelic Society Museum or the Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County. Try your hand at genealogical research at the Centre County Library and Historical Museum. You can prowl for antiques or for that special gift at our local shops. Or just relax, curl up, and get away from it all at one of our historic bed & breakfasts. No matter what you like to do, it is waiting for you close by.

The Bellefonte Intervalley Area Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1938 and has been a major partner in the development of our community and in service to our neighbors and visitors from around the world ever since. Please be sure to visit us in the Bellefonte Train Station if we can help you with the very latest information on our community or can, in any way, assist you. Our Visitors’ Center is open seven days a week for you to stop in or you can call us at 814-355-2917, e-mail us at [email protected] or visit our web site at bellefontechamber.org.

Bellefonte is always ready to welcome you—and to welcome you back!

This is the third year that Victorian Christmas welcomes United Way Festival of Trees as part of the event weekend. The 20th Annual United Way’s Festival of Trees opens Friday at 4 p.m. and runs all weekend at the Central PA Institute of Science and Technology (CPI).

The auditorium at CPI will be turned into a Winter Wonderland for thousands of people to enjoy during a three-day celebration of the season of giving. Businesses and organizations in Centre County purchase and decorate live trees, which are displayed for the community to enjoy. Admission is just $2 for adults and $1 for children, which includes the spectacular display of themed trees, live entertainment, and the big electric train show. Proceeds will help support the 34 Centre County United Way Partner Agencies.

CPI is nearby on Harrison Road, with plenty of on-site parking. There will also be a special free shuttle that will run between the Festival of Trees, Bellefonte High School, and the diamond in front of the court house. Event hours are:

Friday, December 12 – 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.Saturday, December 13 – 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.Sunday, December 14 – noon to 4 p.m.

Downtown decorating takes place the Sunday before Thanksgiving with Victorian Christmas Committee supervising the preparations, cutting of the live greens, and fluffing the bows the night before. Decorating day begins at 4 am by laying out all the greens and bows.

Then the Committee meets with all volunteers Sunday morning at 7 a.m. at the Bellefonte Moose Lodge #206 for breakfast provided by lodge members and volunteers. At 8 a.m., on the Diamond in front of the court house, volunteers and the BVC committee members get last minute instructions and then team up to decorate 136 lampposts downtown and at Talleyand Park, decorate at the Train Station, and festoon bridges with greens and bows.

The Bellefonte Borough puts all the lights on the trees and adds a tree on the Diamond the week before decorating day. The tree is usually donated by a member of the community.

The Undine Fire Company decorates the front of the Centre County Courthouse with

greens and bows. The Centre County Commissioners also

provide labor for the day. Santa’s House is delivered on the Diamond

in front of the Centre County Courthouse so it can be decorated and made ready for Santa.

Once the decorating is complete, the day ends with a wonderful Thanksgiving luncheon with turkey and all the trimmings provided by the Bellefonte Elks Lodge #1094. An annual grant from Bellefonte Elks Lodge’s Garver Fund partially funds the purchase of the live greens and bows.

The week after decorating day, the Bellefonte Senior High School Art Class under the direction of Art Teacher Meg Barton paints the windows at many of the town’s businesses.

It takes many hours, generous donations, and dozens of volunteers behind the scenes to create Bellefonte Victorian Christmas. Thanks to everyone who helps, donates, and visits our fair town – making this celebration an outstanding Centre County tradition for more than 33 years.

Breakfast with Santa is sponsored by the Bellefonte Kiwanis and the free activities

of the Victorian Christmas Children’s Party are sponsored by Historic Bellefonte, Inc.

Santa’s HouseSanta will leave

the party and head to Santa’s House on the Diamond, arriving at 11:45 a.m. Saturday

of the court house. Visits are free. Bring your camera and capture the moment.

A Child’s Victorian TeaGet the little ones

Dr. Kevin and Carol Burke Pisgah229 W. Linn Street

A perennial favorite on the Homes Tour, this impressive red brick Burnside/McCoy house was built in 1869. Named Pisgah, a reference to the mountain from which Moses was allowed to view the Promised Land, the house sits on a rise overlooking Spring Creek.

A summer kitchen and servants’ quarters, now converted to a caretaker’s cottage, share the landscaped lot filling the entire block between West Linn

and West Curtin streets. The property is most easily approached from West Curtin Street.

The Burkes graciously welcome visitors to the home each Christmas. They have carefully and lovingly filled the 16-room mansion with appropriate antique furnishings, oriental rugs, books, portraits, and Hudson River Valley paintings. Other features include Victorian gowns, marble statuary, militaria, religious items, and various other objet d’art.

Traditionally several of the six fireplaces are in use during the tour. All three floors, the caretaker’s cottage, and the grounds are open for public viewing.

Ellen MasantS. Stewart Lyon House

205 W. Curtin Street

This Italianate style residence was built in 1872 for S. Stewart Lyon and his wife, Annie Valentine Lyon, both children of prominent Centre County iron furnace owner/operators.

S. Stewart Lyon was the son of John Lyon, co-founder with Robert T. Stewart and Anthony Shorb, of Lyon, Shorb & Company, a rolling mill established in 1825 on the Monongahela River across from Pittsburgh. This company was known as the Sligo Iron Works of Pittsburgh. Iron for the Sligo Iron Works came from Centre, Huntingdon, Blair, and Clarion counties where Lyon, Shorb & Company operated several iron furnaces. Circa 1880, Lyon, Shorb & Company was one of the largest iron firms in Centre County.

Annie Valentine was the daughter of Abraham Valentine who invented the first iron ore washer, which greatly reduced the

time and expense of processing ore.Shortly after the home was completed

in 1877, S. S. Lyon was elected burgess of Bellefonte Borough, a term synonymous with the present day office of mayor.

Architectural features of the home’s exterior include the three-story center tower, bracketed eaves, boxed and returned cornices, heavily molded window trim, the front entry door, and six-over-six, double-hung window sashes.

Mary Stuart Steele Gordon House

137 W. Curtin StreetThis three-story Second Empire

Italianate home was commissioned by the Presbyterian Church as a potential source of income for Widow Mary Stuart Steele Gordon.

Mrs. Gordon was a direct descendent of James Dunlop, one of the founders of Bellefonte, who included a plot for the church in the original town plan. Her family members were the original church elders who had contributed much to the financial wellbeing of the church. Mary’s husband James Gordon’s family was of similar status in Clearfield County. In fact, Mary’s portrait hangs in the Isabelle Gordon House, open to the public as a museum in Clearfield.

The house was built by Philadelphia builder Charles McCafferty, completed in 1871. McCafferty later relocated to Bellefonte

and built many of the now-historic homes on Linn and Curtin streets as well as several downtown buildings. His own home, now a bed and breakfast, sits diagonally across the intersection from this house on North Spring Street.

The 5,100-plus square foot home is wrapped with front and side porches and 16-inch thick Pennsylvania sandstone walls. The entry hall features a walnut handrail on a broad staircase that spirals up three stories. The home boasts a mansard roof and eave brackets under the roofline.

William TresslerF. Potts Green House

107 E. Linn StreetConstructed in 1857, the residence

of F. Potts Green was illustrated as “An Ornamented Cottage” in Victorian Buildings by Samuel Sloan (1815-1884). Sloan, a nationally prominent Philadelphia-based architect and best-selling author of the mid-nineteenth century, designed many significant buildings in Central Pennsylvania. Examples remain in Williamsport, Lock Haven, Bellefonte, and Hollidaysburg.

When built, the home stood in an open field. Today, the site is the prominent northeast corner of the intersections of Allegheny and Linn streets in a neighborhood comprised of nineteenth- and twentieth-century residential, religious, and civic buildings.

The F. Potts Green House is an excellent example of the Eastlake style, embodied in the elaborate decorative saw tooth trim visible on the upper story porch. Widely

overhanging eaves supported by large brackets, tall narrow windows with unique pane configurations, projecting hexagonal bays, distinctive porches, and bold ornamental wood details characterize the building.

Miles-Humes Housecurrently housing The

Centre County Library & Historical Museum

203 N. Allegheny StreetCelebrating its 200th birthday

in 2014, the Miles-Humes House is a four bay Georgian-style, limestone house. It was built between 1814 and 1816 for Captain Joseph Miles, one of the founders of Milesburg and an ironmaster there and at Centre Furnace in today’s College Township. The house was sold to William Wilson Potter, lawyer and U. S. congressman, in 1830. His widow, Lucy Winter Potter, invited her niece, Lucy Winter Alexander, and her new husband, banker Edward C. Humes, to live with her.

Humes inherited the home in 1875. A two-story brick addition and a porch were added. Later, Humes’ children, William P. and Ann Elmira, removed the additions, moved the house back 12 feet, raised it four

feet, adding to the back of the house and front and side porches with Doric columns and balustrades. These were removed in 1949.

When Ann Elmira Humes died in 1935, she bequeathed the house to the community for use as a library and museum. The home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Today the Pennsylvania Room, Historical Museum, and library administrative offices are housed in the home’s 28 rooms.
