step process along with your summary

• Check the summary about your article from Friday against the 5-step process• Revise if necessary

Writing a Summary!

• It is important to learn how to properly summarize material so that students will be able to sum up articles quickly and effectively. Too much information wastes time and energy on reading, while not enough will leave big gaps in understanding. It’s crucial to pick out the important details.

What is Summarizing?

• Summarizing is how we take larger selections of text and reduce them to their bare essentials:– the gist, the key ideas, the main points

that are worth noting and remembering.

Steps to Summarize an ARTICLE1. Identify the main idea– 1 sentence: What is it going to be about?

2. Read the text and highlight/underline important details – You should NEVER highlight a full sentence, except for a topic

sentence

3. As you read, number the paragraphs. When you are finished write 1/2 sentences that summarize each paragraph. Number your sentences.

4. Identify the conclusion. – What important information came from the article?

5. SUMMARIZE: Write it in paragraph form, using your own words!
