PERSPECTIVE
What is perspective? (from Latin perspicere, to see through) A graphic system that creates the illusion of depth
and volume on a two-dimensional surface. ***(Makes something look 3D on a 2D surface.)
The invention of linear perspective is generally attributed to the Florentine architect Brunelleschi, and the ideas continued to be developed and used by Renaissance artists, notably Piero Della Francesca and Andrea Mantegna.

ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE
Making Space out of nothing at ALL except straight lines!!!
What is 1 POINT perspective?
Used to draw the same objects as one-point perspective, rotated: looking at the corner of a house, looking at two forked roads shrink into the distance or a box from the corner, for example.
A drawing which has one Vanishing Point.
A drawing using three set of lines : horizontal, vertical and converging (diagonal).
TWO POINT PERSPECTIVE
Making Space out of nothing at ALL except straight lines!!!
What is 2 POINT perspective?
Used to draw the same objects as one-point perspective, rotated: looking at the corner of a house, looking at two forked roads shrink into the distance or a box from the corner, for example.
A drawing which has two Vanishing Points.
A drawing using two set of lines : vertical and converging (diagonal) only,… there are NO HORIZONTAL lines besides the Horizon Line.
VERTICAL
CONVERGING
NO HORIZONTAL LINES!!!!!
Why Two-point perspective? To create SPACE on a flat media like
paper. To create FORMS from straight lines. To understand how objects relate to
the viewers point of view. To learn the basics for architectural
drawings.
Vocabulary Diagonal lines: Lines that slant. Vertical lines: Lines straight up and down,
parallel to the side edges of the paper and at a right angle to the horizon.
Horizontal line: Lines parallel to the horizon.
Vocabulary Horizon Line: Line parallel to the edge of
the paper that marks your line of sight. Vanishing Point: Point on the horizon line
where receding parallel lines seem to meet. Converging Lines: Diagonal lines used to
show distance and depth by going towards the Vanishing Point.
Assignment Student must draw a street corner with
two sides if the streets and buildings on each side.
All buildings must have windows, door(s), at least one sign and surface textures.
The drawing must also have at least one space between two buildings (ex: alley, street or walkway)
Student Examples
Assignment – OPTION 2 Student must draw various boxes
that fill the paper showing overlapping, open boxes, at least one irregular box and a variety of sizes and shapes. Student will color the boxes using three colored pencils one light, one dark and one of their choice.
