• Rome: ancient city, developed the republic system of government
• Germanic Tribe: groups of people from the central part of Europe, where Germany is today
• Byzantine Empire: Roman Empire is divided by a leader called Diocletian. Western Rome remains Rome, but the Eastern part is renamed the Byzantine Empire
• Feudalism: political and social system of the Middle Ages, where each group of people is given a service and gives one in return

ANS: Various; maybe one part of the Empire had more resources than the other, maybe one leader was better than the other, Eastern Rome was farther away from Germanic tribes and therefore were threatened less

How might the decline of reading and writing affect the Romans?
ANS: Rome and the rest of Europe eventually enters a period called the “Dark Ages” after the fall of Rome in which no new technologies are introduced. This is because of the lack of reading and writing after Germanic tribes invaded.

ANS: As the population shifted from cities to rural areas and reading and writing was not practiced, people became less interested in their governments. Fear from invasions made them want to look to someone for help. Feudal lords were men who were able to protect the people near them.
