Utah Military Service

• In 1941, out of more than 1.3 million service members in the United States only 7,000 were from Utah, 2,000 of which were in the state's National Guard units. In June 1945 there were 62,107 Utahns in active military service, and this did not include those already discharged for one reason or another and those killed.

Topaz Internment Camps

• 8,000 American Japanese were sent to these camps

• To be banished and be called disloyal is an unthinkable act and deeply humiliating.

• Harsh conditions: Barbed wire, hot deserts, military guarded.

• President George Bush in 1988 gave an official apology and $20,000 to each internee.
