Texas
• Many Americans wanted Texas because the land was perfect for growing cotton – the South’s most valuable cash crop.
Americans flood Texas
• When Mexico declared its independence from Spain,
• Texas belonged to Mexico.
• Mexico agreed to let American Stephen F. Austin start a colony in Texas, if he followed Mexico’s rule.
• This led to a rush of American settlers to Texas.
Texas Closes
• Rising tensions between Americans in Texas and Tejanos (Texans of Mexican descent) eventually led to Mexico closing Texas to U.S. immigration.
Texas Revolution
• Americans asked Mexico to reopen Texas to immigration and make it a separate Mexican state. This began the Texas Revolution.
Annex Texas (Make it part of US)
• Southerners wanted to annex, or add to the country, Texas to add another slave state. Northerners did not want to add another slave state. Many people also feared annexing Texas would lead to war with Mexico.

Admitted as a state
• After 10 years of debate, Congress finally voted to annex Texas and it was admitted to the country as the 28th state in 1845.
