“September days are here, with summer's best of weather and autumn's best of cheer.” Helen Hunt Jackson
SEPTEMBER 2017
Miss Piddle was very busy presenting programs
for adult groups with a general theme of
“Inventors” from mid-July through August. She
visited Horizon Adult Day Care, Just Family Adult
Day Care, Bell County Senior Citizens, and
Comp. Care. Using books from the Bell County
Libraries collection, programs were presented on:
“John Deere, That’s Who!”
Did you know? John Deere began his career as a blacksmith, but never was a farmer! After listening to local farmers complain about the thick mud sticking to their plows (made or wood or cast iron) John Deere took a broken steel saw blade and forged a new lightweight plow, beginning the success of today’s John Deere Company.
“Thomas Jefferson: President, Author of the Declaration of Independence, Patriot
and Inventor” Did you know? Thomas Jefferson invented the rotating chair – what we call an office chair, as well as a rotating bookstand so he could read five books at a time! Thomas was an accomplished violinist, and often played for dances and parties. “Ben Franklin: Patriot, Educator and Inventor” Did you know? Ben Franklin invented bifocal glasses, swim fins, the Franklin Stove, the lightning rod, and mapped the Gulf Stream –
Atlantic Ocean currents, along with many other inventions. He organized America’s first circulating library (!), ways to deal with municipal waste, postal service, America’s first public hospital, America’s first volunteer fire department, designed coins and stamps and improved street lamps so they would give more light and not be easily vandalized.
“Six Dots” Did you know? Louis Braille was born in France, and became totally blind by the age of 5. By age 10 he was frustrated at the lack of books and the difficulty of gaining knowledge for blind people. After solving a military secret code, Louis worked to make a similar code for blind people. He was inspired by his memories of playing dominos as a young boy with his mother, and at age 15 created the Braille alphabet using the 6 dots of dominos.
“Henry Ford” Did you know? Henry Ford was a genius inventor who left his family farm at 16 to apprentice himself to a machinist in Detroit. In his early 20’s, he created his first vehicle, a “Quadricycle” using a bicycle frame, 4 bicycle tires and a small gasoline engine. He debuted the Model T in October 1908, and invented the Assembly Line to keep up with the demand for his Model T. In 1918 more than half of the automobiles on the roads in the US were the Ford Model T.
A program on
Audio Books was
presented to the
Middlesboro
Senior Citizen's
Center on
