The bursting BEK Sports logo is a pretty good visual

description of how BEK Sports initially came on the

scene in 2006…

Driven to provide the best in live local high school sports, BEK Communications invested in a state-of-the-art mobile television production studio in

2006 in preparation to hit the road running to deliver local sports coverage in the BEK territory.

In the beginning, the focus was to broadcast competitive games of rival teams from South Central North Dakota. In 2007, everyone got involved! Employees were provided the technology, training, cameras, computer graphic and audio equipment to produce professional quality sports. Negotiations with schools and parents got us in the doors and enabled BEK Sports to train and enlist students to help with broadcasts, giving them a unique training opportunity using sophisticated cameras and production equipment. The students and community members who have helped deliver a LIVE event have earned credits at the end of a broadcast and gained technical knowledge and a life experience they probably would never have had the opportunity to develop without BEK Sports.

During the winter of 2008, the first state-wide BEK sports event hit TV screens when 11 telephone cooperatives/companies partnered to carry the State Class “B” Wrestling Tournament from the Bismarck Civic Center. State Wrestling coverage was a big step forBEK Sports, followed by many more…

• Summer 2008 – BEK Sports showcased its talent with its delivery of the North Dakota Shrine Bowl football games, live from the FargoDome.

• Summer 2009 - BEK included live coverage of the Lions All-Star basketball games for a broadcast to nearly 180,000 North Dakota homes.

• Fall 2009 – BEK Sports expanded from one network to three for more games, more venues and wider areas of coverage. The coverage area map shows BEK Sports Central, BEK Sports West and BEK Sports Network and the companies who comprise each network.

BEK Sports continued from page one

At the conclusion of the Fall 2009/Winter 2010 season,BEK Sports’ winning record included the following stats: 127 Live games including 21 football games, 36 volleyball games, 25 girls basketball games, 31 boys basketball games, 13 wrestling matches and one hockey game, the 2009 State Volleyball tournament and the 2010 State Wrestling tournament. All in all, BEK Sports broadcasted live games from 44 different cities reaching thousands of people.

The 2010/2011 school season offered plenty of opportunities to view games from across the state. We are proud to report some pretty impressive milestones for this past season. 164 games in 199 days at 48 venues. More than 125 local students and crewmembers helped deliver these games live as part of our unique training opportunities. BEK Sports expanded its statewide coverage to include the Class “A” & Class “B” State Wrestling duals and individual matches and the Class “A” & Class “B” state volleyball championship games reaching about 24,000 households. Once again, the ever popular Shrine football games and Lions All Star Girls and Boys Class “A” and Class “B” basketball live coverage was delivered in July with the Badlands Bowl added to the summer mix in 2010.

Tune in this July and catch some fantastic sports action with the Shrine Bowl live from the Alerus Center in Grand Forks and the Lions All Star games live from the Bismarck Civic Center and the Faro Civic Center. (see ad on page 4) The fall schedule will be available and shared soon. Everything you want to know about BEK Sports can be found at www.beksports.com. Also, be sure to visit us on facebook.com/BEKSports and YouTube.com/BEKSportsNetwork.

Welcome to BEK Sports…enjoy the experience!

Photo ContestWhat do artists Thomas Kinkade, Terry Redlin and former N.D. artist

Gary Miller have in common?

Their paintings capture the superb detail of beautiful landscapes. Many of their works tell a story; they may preface with an object or a building, but look at the foreground and background detail to see the awesome scenery displayed on the canvas. It can actually take your breath away and make you wish you were right there!

BEK’s 2012 calendar will carry a theme – the theme chosen for 2012 is LANDSCAPES. We challenge our local photographers to do what the artists do, only to do it with a camera instead of a brush. With your camera, you possess the same talent as an artist, the ability to see beyond the object. Share the beauty around us. Show us the natural inland scenery of our region/state. Now is a perfect time; Mother Nature is breathing down our necks and continually changing our landscapes. It’s time to capture our surroundings because a year from now, it may all look different. And remember, each season changes the landscape as well. Look in your archives for seasonal landscape pictures to submit in our contest.

Wikipedia says that a landscape comprises the visible features of an area of land, including the physical elements of landforms such as

mountains, hills, water bodies such as rivers, lakes, ponds and the sea, living elements of land cover including indigenous vegetation, human elements including different forms of land use, buildings and structures, and transitory elements such as lighting and weather conditions. We may not have mountains in North Dakota, but we are confident you can help us produce an awesome North Dakota Landscapes calendar for 2012. Winners will receive a prize and have their entries featured in the calendar. Please send landscape photos only.*

The deadline for this photo contest is September 8, 2011. High resolution pictures may be emailed to [email protected] and photographs can be mailed to:BEK CommunicationsAttn: Calendar Photo ContestPO Box 230Steele, N.D. 58482

Include your contact information but do not write on the back of your photo.(BEK reserves the right to determine the quality of submitted photos.)

*This contest is limited to the 2012 Landscapes calendar. The directory

cover photo contest will be announced at a later date.

The new telephone directories have arrived! The 2011-2012 edition of the BEK/West River Missouri Slope Telephone Directory was mailed to BEK customers in June. Each customer was mailed one midi directory. The new midi was chosen for its handy size, but don’t let the book size fool you. The print size is exactly the same as it was in our former large directory.

The BEK directory includes listings from BEK Communications and West River Telecommunications based out of Hazen, N.D., as well as Bismarck listings, giving BEK customers the advantage of additional listings.

After receiving your directory, please check your listing for any errors. If you find any errors, please report them as soon as possible. While every effort is made to improve each issue and to eliminate all errors in the BEK/West River Missouri Slope Telephone Directory, BEK Communications and the publishers of the directory do not assume any liability because of errors and omissions that may occur in the telephone directory.

If you did not receive the new directory or need extra copies, additional directories are available at the following locations:
