The Joyful Expansion of Yerushalayim

Walled cities are by definition limited in space, and Yerushalayim is noexception to this rule. While from a military perspective a wall was a standardform of defense for ancient cities, these walls also have halakhic and spiritualramifications. The special sanctity of the city was circumscribed by the walls. It was only within the walls that one was able to eat sacrificial meat and ma’asersheni.[1] The Rambam rules that a metzora is prohibited from being within thewalls of the city.[2] The sanctity of the city is defined and restricted.

With this background in mind, this week’s haftorah takes on newsignificance. Yeshayahu declares:

Sing you barren woman who has not borne; burst out into song andjubilate, you who have not experienced birth pangs, for the children of thedesolate one are more than the children of the married woman," says the

Lord. Widen the place of your tent, and let them stretch forth the curtainsof your habitations, do not spare; lengthen your cords and strengthen yourstakes.[3]

According to Rashi[4] the “barren woman” being addressed in the pasukis Yerushalayim who will expand in the future. Similarly, Zecharya[5] promisesthat in the future Yerushalayim will be an unwalled city: “Jerusalem shall beinhabited like unwalled towns, because of the multitude of men and cattletherein.” There is a prophetic motif of an expanded, wallless messianicYerushalayim. In Chassidut, the breaking of boundaries through expansion isassociated with unbridled joy (simcha poretzet geder).[6] It is through joy thatthe artificial barriers that exist between people and between a person andHashem can be broken. Perhaps, this is the reason that the messianicYerushalayim is described as expanding. The joy of mashiach will allow thesanctity of Yerushalayim to expand well beyond its “natural” borders and spillover into the rest of the world.

It is certainly not a coincidence that another item associated with thebreaking of boundaries is the king. The Gemara allows a king to “break” thingsin order to make a road, and Rashi comments that the items that he is breakingare fences (poretz gedairot acheirim).[7] While on the simple level this is a verydifferent sort of “breaking boundaries” homiletically the two expansions arebeautifully woven together in these prophecies regarding Yerushalayim. Theroyal city, representing kingship, will joyfully expand beyond its limitedboundaries and affect the world outside its former borders.

May we soon see the joyful expansion of Yerushalayim!

The children were excited to be back in the art and archaeologychug after the summer break. We spoke about the spectacularfloor tiles from Har HaBayit (very likely from the Beit HaMikdash!)that have recently been found and restored. We made beautifulsimilar designs with mosaics as decorations for Succot.

Mazal tov to Am Yisrael.9.15.2016

In the early hours of this morning Thursday 15th September,an Arab walked out of a Jewish owned building in the Old City,

with his suitcases and belongings.

That building was once owned (Purchased in 1866) by thefamous and highly respected Turkish Valero family, who usedthe premises as their main residence. Valero also opened thefirst bank in the Old City in the mid 19th Century. Due to thepogroms and Arab riots of the 1920's, Valero, like many Jews, was forced to flee. Over 20 years ago, Jewish concerns bought back the buildingcomplex and became the official registered owners. Howeverthe Arabs living in the building had certain tenancy rights. A fewyears ago, those rights expired and were no longer applicable. Some of the Arab families living in the main building complexunderstood the new situation and made arrangements to leave. There was one Arab family who refused to leave and who evenrefused to accept a most generous financial compensation. He lost numerous court cases, including the Supreme court ofIsrael. He had to vacate the premises, and so, accompanied bycourt appointed officials, this morning he left and the building isnow fully in Jewish hands. Although the original building was owned by the Valero family, itwas decided to dedicate the building in the name of RabbiSimon Dolgin z"l, who was the Rabbi of BethJacob in LA andRamat Eshkol for many years. He was an avid supporter ofAteret Cohanim. The challenge now is twofold: 1) To fund the urgent security projects which will enable Jewishfamilies to live safely including:

Fencing on rooftop ($5,500) Entrance door to include new magnetic security lock($3,600) Security cameras ($18,000)

2) To fund the much needed renovations to the ValeroDolgincomplex.
