Charity Ride

Low Country The Charleston County Sherriff’s Office and Low Country Harley-Davidson kicked up their kick stands, revved their engines and rode through Charleston to help kids kick cancer!

The Low Country H-D Charity Ride event was a huge success for our first year! We had over 150 bikes, over 250 people and raised over $2,500 for Camp Happy Days! The Charleston County Sher-iff’s Department took the riders on a two-hour escorted tour of some of the most beautiful parts of the Low country. Then we ended with an after-party at the dealership. The motor police did an incredible demonstration of their riding skills, we listened to music, ate hot dogs and hamburgers and gave away some incredible prizes, including a laptop and a $100 gift certificate to Low Coun-try Harley-Davidson.

Crusin’ the Coast Bike Rally is making a turn around. I have talked with several leaders in the city of Myrtle Beach and they all have the same thing to say, we will welcome you and treat you with respect and not be harassing you as long as you treat our city with respect.

The hotels reservations are already 65% booked and the campgrounds are 95% booked, according to sources. Moving ahead to Spring Rally there will be many events for bikers to enjoy. Sponsored by Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson, there will be Harley-Davidson Demo rides, The Full Throttle Saloon will be there along with the Flaunt Girls all from Sturgis. The Flaunt Girls will be in different locations during the day for photos and autographs. There will be pier parties all along the strand. There will be vendors at the Inlet Square Mall along with entertainment by the Una Circus. If you’re are not familiar with them they are a group that does a high wire act with motorcycle. Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson location the FTS trailer with Mike & Angie and the Flaunt Girls, will be on location, NASCAR simulator, vendors and Ms. Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson will be there. They are also planning to have different rides along the grand strand. They are having a draw-ing for 5 night stay during rally. Check out their web page and face book for details and how to be in this. There will be many vendor locations all over the rally.

The Beaver Bar in Murrells Inlet is having live entertainment and The Flaunt Girls @ night dancing. Visit both of The Bea-ver Locations.

The Rats Hole also has many events during rally both day and night. Check the Cowboy out he has the place jumping and there is never a dull moment. The City Line Saloon has a vari-ety of things going on. And many more locations you can visit and join in on the fun.

So from this biker’s point of view. If you miss Spring Bike Rally, May 13th thru 21st 2011 you will have missed one great time. Honor and Remember Across America

Shortly after Memorial Day 2010 George Lutz, the founder of Honor and Remember, started out on a cross country tour spreading the word about Honor and Remember. George made stops in all fifty states. Meeting with state legislators to get them on board and supporting the Honor and Remember flag as well as House Bill 1034. This is a bill that when passed by both the House and Senate and then signed by the Presi-dent would recognize the Honor and Remember flag as a National Symbol honoring all the men and women that have given their lives for out freedoms.

George made several stops in North Carolina. The first was in Asheville at Trinity Baptist Church. There he presented a personalized flag to George and Darlene Houghton. Their son was Caption George-Bryan Houghton. He was US Air Force F-16 Pilot. He died June 22, 2009.

On November 8th George made a stop in Raleigh at the Old Senate building. Congressman Walter B. Jones and North Carolina Senator Don Davis spoke. A personalized Honor and Remember member flag was presented to Melda Jones, Sister of 2nd Lt. T.J. Meeks. 2nd Lt. Thomas J. (“TJ”) Meeks was the second of 12 children born to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Meeks. TJ’s father was a tenant farmer and taught him his hard-work ethic. TJ graduated from Bethel High School in 1936. Afterward, he attended East Carolina Teacher’s College. He not only worked his way through college, but thumbed a ride to and from his classes each day – approxi-mately 15 miles each way. After graduation, he and taught Math and Band at Ahoskie High School before volunteering for service in August of 1941. He joined the US Army Air Corps and was sent overseas as a navigator on a B-17 Flying For-tress. The report that he was killed in Action came on June 13, 1943. TJ’s plane had been shot down over Germany.

Traveled to Fort Bragg where we presented to Lorie Southerland, Mother of SPC Michael Rodriguez a person-alized Honor and Remember flag. Michael was born to be a soldier - that is all he ever wanted to be – he was dedi-cated and re-enlisted while in Iraq. Michael had a big heart for others. He was always bringing home strays, both pets and people… the family’s cat, Scout, he rescued from the barracks, and there is a picture of a puppy in Michael’s uni-form pocket that he and the other soldiers adopted while in Iraq. He started bringing home soldiers the night he rolled in on the bus from jump school. Over the years there have been many pets and his friends have become family. Mi-chael’s awards include, but are not limited to: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, and the Expert Marksmanship Badge. Michael’s unit, the 5 / 73rd Cavalry, also earned the Presidential Unit Citation and the Meritori-ous Unit Citation during Michael’s deployment.

On November 9th the Honor and Remember group went to Camp Lejeune and present Joyce Boatman, mother of GySgt Darrell Boatman a personalized Honor and Remem-ber flag. Gunnery Sergeant Darrell Wayne Boatman was a Marine of over 20 years at the time of his second deploy-ment to Iraq in September 2005. Gysgt Boatman was wounded on November 2, 2005 in Habbaniyah, Iraq and succumbed to these wounds on November 4th.

George continued his journey until Veteran’s Day. The jour-ney ended that day with the planting of Honor and Remem-ber flags in Arlington Cemetery.

The weather could not have been better for a January afternoon as motorcycle riders from many organizations gathered for A Hero’s Send Off of the XVIII Airborne Corps. Combat Vets Motorcycle Association Riders, Roll-ing Thunder Riders, Warriors Watch Riders, Patriot Guard Riders, American Legion Riders, Hog Owners Group Riders, Gold Star Moms, Blue Star Moms and I am sure many that I am forgetting (Which I am sorry about) all meeting and working together for our Troops. It was an awesome site to see and even more so to be a part of.

As I looked around it was inspiring to see so many groups, associations, clubs, etc but what really stood out in my mind was the amount of family members that came out to show their support as well. As a Combat Veteran I see and know firsthand why “I” make the effort to be there for our deploying soldiers. I understand what it means to have someone that you do not even know there to say “Thank you” and “stay safe”. But to the children that were out there today with their mom or dad I want to let you know how proud we are of you!

It was a blessing in disguise when were heard the announcement that the buses were going to be delayed and that we would have just over an hour to talk and get to know one another for a bit. I am humbled to know that some folks rode from out-of-state to be there today!

I have been on many funeral missions standing the line for one of our fallen Brothers or Sisters and at times, I must admit, those missions can be so difficult for me to attend. It turns my mind into a whirlwind of feelings

and brings back to mind memories of events I try to keep at bay. I know I am not the only one that has deals with those feelings but we are not there for ourselves, we are there for our fallen comrade and their families and it is that reason we keep on going.

Today’s mission however was one of those special times when we are there for a “feel good” mission… or so I thought. As I stood talking with the founder of ‘Helping Hands for Hero’s’ we could not help but overhear the cries from a passing vehicle - “goodbye daddy!” Those two words put an instant stop to our conversation and our eyes were fixed on the soldier running alongside the vehicle waving and saying “I love you” and while I tried my best to keep her from shedding a tear of her own I couldn’t help but reminded that so many families will be without their loved ones tonight.

So now as I sit here reflecting back on today’s mission and all of those that came out to show their support I am so proud (as I’m sure everyone that was out there is) that I can take a moment and show the pictures and to explain to my daughter how much it means for those families and soldiers to know that we love them and support them.

This is a 36 volt full electric EZ GO golf cart rear end (with a couple mods) the front half of the frame is a 2002 Harley bagger with a heri-tage softail front end. The box was hand built by us here at the shop along with the back half of the frame. It’s fully street legal (turn signals brake lights all that good stuff) right now it tops out about 30-35 but were working on a couple things to get the speed up to 45mph. We’re av-eraging about 45-50 miles on a charge depend-ing on the terrain. It took 1st place at the inter-national motorcycle show in Novi, Michigan.

Helen Kiss Main"The Pink Lady"

Helen Kiss Main, from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, started riding motorcycles when she was 14 years old. Her dad owned the local Indian Dealership there in Pottstown. She said back then you could buy a brand new Indian Motorcycle completely outfitted with all the chrome you could put on it for $375.00.

Glennadine Gouldman, Vice-President of The Motor Maids, invit-ed me to tag along on a day of fellowship with other Motor Maids members and to meet and interview Helen Kiss Main. It was in the Fall of 2010 and it was Helen’s 91st birthday!

Motor Maids, Inc. is motorcycling’s 1st Women’s riding organization that is still in existence. It was founded in 1940 and Helen was a founding mem-ber (#7) and the first Treasurer of the MM when there were 51 Charter members. The American Motorcycle Association Charter #509 was issued to the club in 1941.

We started our visit with Helen in an adjacent building to her home, on the estate along the East River in Virginia. We savored homemade sand-wiches and snacks that were prepared by her neighbor friends. We all enjoyed talking to and listening to Helen Main. Her original Motor Maids uniform was hanging there in the room. It was still in pristine condition! Helen’s hair was done to a “T” and so was her make-up. Aside from a little hear-ing loss and being legally blind, and at 91, Helen seemed to be in excellent health. Her mind was as crisp as a new 100 dollar bill! She remembered details of her life’s past like they were from just yesterday or an hour ago!

She was wearing one of her original Motor Maid uniforms, the one with pink and blue. On that uniform it has “Pink” embroidered on the right collar and “Lady” embroidered on the left collar. It fit her perfectly, just like some of her old photo-graphs depicted her wearing it back when she was in her twenties.Over against one wall were trophies and acco-lades to Helen Kiss Main. There were old photo-graphs of her with her motorcycle, on rides or with notable people from her era.

After eating and socializing, we walked over to Helen’s home and sat in a big room. All the Motor Maids gathered around and Helen sat in the middle of the room.

What follows are some of the questions asked of Helen Kiss Main...

...What was it like to ride a motorcycle when your dad first gave you your motorcycle? Helen...”It was a bit scary, I’ll tell ya that.” She thought for a moment, “I remember getting on the bike. My daddy took me up to a park, called Mana-tawny Park and we had a race track there.24

That is where he taught me to ride. He said, if you can ride a bicycle you can ride that motorcycle. So, I rode around that place for quite a while...and didn’t fall down. Then, as I rode out, didn’t I fall! I got up, picked my bike up, kicked it (started it) and rode down into Pottstown. That was my first experience.”

...Where did you get the name, “Pink Lady” from?Helen...”I was named that by an artist who lived in Ohio. He met me in Daytona Beach. We drove down there for the 500 Mile Race.He came over to me and introduced himself.” She paused... “I wish I could remember his name. He said, I am going to make chrome plates for you and I am going to bring them to you from Ohio to put on either side of your fenders...and I am going to call you ‘The Pink Lady’. You see, I already had this uniform.” Helen points to the uniform that she is wearing on this day. “I had this made in Philadelphia by the tailor who tailored all of Tom Mix’s outfits.” (Tom was a notable American film actor and the star of many early Western movies. He made a reported 336 films between1910 and 1935, all but nine of which were silent features. He was Hollywood’s first Western megastar and is noted as having helped define the genre for all cowboy actors who followed.) “And when I went to the motorcycle factory, they asked what color do you want your bike paint-ed. I had a white bike at the time. I handed him two pieces of fabric. He said, ‘Oh my God, I have never painted a bike pink and blue but I will do it for you.’ Out came my bike and I was called the “Pink Lady”.

...Tell me the story again about your mom sending you to a race after school.Helen...”I was a beautician and I came home from work. I walked in the door. It was about 4 o’clock and my mother said to me, I have your outfit ready and your bike is all polished. ‘Daddy Baer’ (Fritzie Baer, an Indian Dealer in Springfield Massachu-setts) I called him that. He called down here and said I want her on that bike tonight at 5 o’clock and I want her to be here in Springfield, Massachu-setts tomorrow morning. So, I got dressed, put a fresh outfit in my saddle bags, and said, goodbye mommy.” Helen smiles and waves goodbye, as if it was that very day.“Our mechanic at the store rode with me to the outside of Pottstown. I rode on that night and when I got to the Holland Tunnel, a man was standing there and waving everybody on. He stopped me and said, Listen little girly, I want you to be careful because that’s oil from all the trucks and I don’t want you to fall down. Goodbye. So, I continued all night and I got to Springfield the next morning. Daddy Baer’s two sons met me and took me to their house. I went to bed and slept five hours. They cleaned my bike. I had a fresh outfit in my saddle bag. I got on my bike and I and Daddy Baer’s two sons, the three of us, rode into Laconia, N.H. and I entered the race...it was a slow race. If you kicked your bike more than one time you were already out. Well, I kicked my bike and it started. I knew it was going to start. I rode it out in front of the judges about three to five miles an hour with-out putting my foot down...and that’s not easy! You have to know how to balance yourself! I got off the bike stood by the bike and I wore this outfit back then in 1940.” Helen points to the outfit she was wearing on this day. She continued...”They looked at my bike, they looked at my outfit and they asked me to move on. I looked at my bike and I thought, you better start. One kick and I was off. I won the trophy! Out of all the girls that were there, I won the trophy.” Helen smiles as she says this.“If you ever go to Springfield Mass, they have a museum there” (Museum of Springfield History). “My trophy, my leathers and my bike colors and the picture is right there. They made me a celeb-rity! ...because I rode a motorcycle. It was rare in those days in 1940.”

...How did it feel to be interviewed for Cris Sim-mons book...to be apart of her book? (Cris Sum-mer Simmons is Cofounder of Harley Women Magazine; freelance motorcycle writer/photogra-pher; author of “The American Motorcycle Girls 1900 to 1950”; three-time Motorcycle Hall of Fame inductee; married to Doobie Brother band mem-ber Patrick Simmons and a member of the Motor Maids.)Helen...”I felt like a celebrity to get in that book. I thought, what did I do to earn this?

...How did you pack for a trip like that? What was necessary?Helen...Thinks for a moment and then says, “A tube of lipstick and a comb.” She says this nonchalantly as the room is in an uproar with laughter. Helen then smiles and added emphatically, “If you had lipstick on they knew you were a girl!” More laugh-ter from the room. “We wore our hair short and a lot of times I didn’t put my helmet on. We didn’t have to wear heavy helmets. Just that little piece of cloth. It was nice to ride on the bike with your hair blowing in the wind. You’re really with the Lord. He is taking care of you. I always said a little prayer, too, when I got on that bike.”

...How did you find out about the Motor Maids? When did you meet Dot Robinson? (Dot was a woman before her time and so was a woman by the name of, Linda Dugeau. In 1938, Dugeau began a letter-writing campaign to estab-lish a national network of female motorcyclists who owned and rode their own machines. She located Dot Robinson who was a successful Harley-David-son Dealer in Detroit and in 1939 they rode all over the United States looking for women who owned and rode their own motorcycles. They found the 51 ladies who became the charter members of the Motor Maids of America, now known as the Mo-tor Maids, Inc. In the 1930s, women riders were so rare that it took Linda and Dot Robinson, three years to locate the charter members of The Motor Maids. Even now, the founding premise is that the group consist of women who own and ride their own motorcycle) Helen...” I met her the first year I started riding. I started riding motorcycles when I was 14 years old. That was 1937 because I rode my bike to school and would give kids rides around the block.” Helen smiles proudly. “That was quite an event for a girl to ride a motorcycle to school! I don’t know what the teachers thought...she must be crazy.”

Helen’s family did not have a car but they had a motorcycle...a motorcycle with a side car. Every-where they went, they went on the motorcycle. Her dad drove with Helen in his lap while her mother would ride in the side car with Helen’s two younger siblings, one on each knee. All five of them would ride the motorcycle for a few years until they could afford to buy a car.

I was able to ask the last question of Miss Helen Main...and that was, “What advice would you give young girls who are just starting to ride motorcycles today?” After thinking for a moment, she says, “Be careful! Don’t show off” Helen chuckles, “A lot of times we try to show off.”Helen looks around the room and says slowly while pointing, “Always act like a lady.”

...And a lady she is! Helen Kiss Main is what the Motor Maids were all about when they started back in ‘40 and she is the epitome of what they are today. I joined the Motor Maids a few weeks before I traveled with the members to meet Helen Main. I knew after meeting Glennadine Gouldman and some of the other MM gals from Virginia that I wanted to be a member...but meet-ing Helen, one of the ‘founding fathers’, was the icing on the cake that just sealed the deal for me! I am very proud to be a Motor Maid!

On a side note:In 2010 the Motor Maids had their National Con-vention in Cody Wyoming...it was the 70th Anni-versary!Helen was invited to come to S.C. for the 72nd Anniversary in 2012. She was told by Reece that she could take a tour of the Indian Motorcycle Company there in Lowell.When asked what her secret was to longevity...Helen said, “The secret is move. You stop and you are dead!” she continued, “When your mind stops working, dig a hole!”

Vice President, Glennadine Gouldman asks, “What did your mother do at the shop?”Helen said, “My mother was the mechanic!” She threw her arms in the air and said, “My mother could take a motorcycle motor apart and put it back together. She was fantastic!”Helen went on to say that they never missed an event and she and her family went to any and all events having to do with motorcycles.“We promoted motorcycles!” She went on to say that young boys would come and gather around. “My daddy would say to them, would you like to take a ride? Get on the back of my daughters bike and she will take you around the block.” She smiled and then said, “Yeah, we introduced motorcycles. We really did. If they thought a girl could ride, they could ride. Yeah.”

July is Women’s Motorcycle Month, and Nationwide Insurance has teamed with the AMA’s Motorcy-cle Hall of Fame Museum to salute female riders and support all women who enjoy the open road on two wheels.

“There are more than 4.3 million women motorcyclists on the road today, and more are joining our ranks every day,” said Beth Hazen, a motorcyclist and Nationwide Insurance agent. “Women’s Mo-torcycle Month celebrates the pioneers who broke down gender and racial barriers in the early days of motorcycling, and we hope their stories inspire even more women to consider getting out on bikes or scooters this summer.”

According to the Motorcycle Industry Council’s most recent research, the number of women motorcycle riders increased 34 percent between 1998 and 2003. Today, major manufacturers report annual increases in sales to women and actively court female riders. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation says women make up nearly 30% of students in its learn-to-ride Basic RiderCoursesSM across the United States.

Many remarkable women have blazed a path on two wheels. Here, Nationwide salutes four who have been named to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

Adeline and Augusta Van Buren: In 1916, Adeline and Augusta rode to coast to coast on Indian mo-torcycles – the first women to make the transcontinental journey solo on two motorcycles. The sisters rode to convince the military that women were capable of serving as dispatch riders. Al-though they were unsuccessful in that mission, they were able shatter many of the early twentieth century’s stereotypes about women.

Bessie Stringfield: In the 1930s and 1940s, Bessie – a female, black motorcyclist - broke down bar-riers by completing eight solo cross-country tours and serving as a U.S. Army motorcycle dis-patch rider. During these tours, she rode fearlessly through the deep South when racial prejudice was a tangible threat. Bessie rode her first motorcycle, an Indian, at the age of 16 and went on to own 27 Harley-Davidsons.

Dot Robinson: In the mid-twentieth century, Dot paved the way for women motorcyclists. In 1939, she and fellow motorcyclist, Linda Dugeau, began Motor Maids of America. Today, Motor Maids is thriving and is the oldest motorcycling organization for women in North America. Dot also opened doors for women in motorcycle competition. An enduro racer, in 1940, Dot became the first woman to win in AMA national competition.

“These women are inspiring to all riders,” said Mark Mederski, executive director of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum. “And, the Hall of Fame encourages motorcyclists to nominate more remarkable women for inclusion.”

Women who have been considering two wheels and are inspired by Women’s Motorcycle Month have many resources available to help them learn to ride. Nationwide’s Hazen offers three tips for getting started.

The sound of a gunshot echoed in the peaceful, early morning hours of August 31, 2008. The shot left one friend shot in the shoulder and another dead with a gunshot to the back of the head. The victim of this shooting was on ordinary person. He was a much loved musician, and biker named Cliff ‘Stonewall’ Jackson. The shooting took place outside a small bar called the Hogs Pen (which is now named The Salty Dog), in Macclesfield, N.C.

Cliff was known and loved by many as was shown immediately after his death, when over 150 friends and acquaintances came to the church in Grifton, N.C. for the visitation. His family was overwhelmed with the number of people that came out to pay their respects to their son, not to mention the 200 bikers that showed up to ride their bikes in their friends funeral. Cliff was a friend to all, lead singer with ‘Still Standing’, and a biker.

Along time and close friend of Cliffs, Marty Burns, wanted to do something in his memory. Mr. Burns waited for things to calm down and the man that pulled the trigger that ended his friend’s life had been sentenced to life in prison. Then after the benefit for the wife of Tommy Redd (Boogie Chillins, All My Rowdy Friends, and Nantucket), he decided it was time to honor his late friend. So he contacted the people at Tie Breakers in Greenville to see if they would be interested in hosting the Memorial and Joe Tonto jumped at the chance to participate in remembering Cliff. Once the location for the jam had been found and possible dates picked the job of finding the bands started. Amazingly, the task was easier than originally thought, but due to the reputation of Cliff the bands, too, jumped at the chance for the opportunity to honor him.

On December 3, 2010, Tie Breakers Sports Bar and Grill in Greenville hosted the 1st Annual Cliff ‘Stonewall’ Jackson Memorial Jam. The first band to take the stage was ‘Brimstone’ from Raleigh. And although the school bus was doubled park was made concerning this group of young musicians, there was nothing childish about their music. The band consisted of teenagers that could really jam. Not knowing how they were going to sound the attendees were set back as the 11 year old female singer (Leah) belted out a rendition of pat Benetars “Hit me With Your Best Shot’. Pat herself would have been envious of the way that young lady performed the song. After a few numbers John Warlick (the friend of Cliff’s that was shot that night and lead guitarist with Still Standing, the band Cliff performed with) made the comment that Brimstones guitar player put him to shame. The next band up was Driver who was also from Raleigh, N.C. The crowd exploded when they took the stage. Well known for their rock tunes, Driver brought the crowd too their feet, edging them on with each selection.

As all the members of Sidewinder were leav-ing the stage the guys of Lexx Luther began taking their places on the stage. After the first selection the band announced if it hadn’t been for Cliff the band wouldn’t exist. Cliff heard that the guys were looking for a drummer and after running into them one evening in Greenville they went to Rafferty’s where he introduced them to their drummer Neil. The band wouldn’t have missed playing that night in Cliff’s memory. Lexx Luther rocked the crowd till closing to the delight of the 300 people that came out that night.

The proceeds of the Memorial went to help the drummer of Parmalle, Scott Thomas, who had been shot, during an attempted robbery at a show in Rock Hill, S.C. The amount raised was not announced, but Marty Burns said that as long as he could do it, there will be future Memorials in Cliffs name with proceeds going to others in need, just as Cliff would have wanted.

All though he wasn’t there that night there was something in the air that gave you the feeling of his presence. To our friend and brother of the open road, you are not forgotten for you love on…

Before Jesse Bolt took the stage former owner of the Hogs Penn and personal friend of Cliffs was introduced to the grow-ing crowd. Big Mike said that ‘He had never met a better man, better person, or better friend than Cliff Jackson. He would give you the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it more than he did. So every-one raise your beers and let’s toast to his memory. Now let’s ROCK this place like he would have done.’ Afterwards, Jesse Bolt played several selections in honor of Cliff. Continuing to rock the bar as if Cliff was there cheering them on. Each selec-tion picked were tunes Cliff really loved so far. As Lexx Luther was getting ready to take the stage the crowd was shocked by a surprise acoustic performance of ‘Living on a Prayer’ by 3 members of Sidewinder, who came out to honor their friend and fel-low musician.

The photo above is one of Behind Barz Motorcycle Magazine’s logos. The logo is owned by Behind Barz, Inc.Recently, a local Rocky Mount guy by the name of, Amos Eddie Jones, took the trademarked name and logo and has started a motorcycle club. He has a Facebook page promoting this bike club and he has had “colors” or vest patches made that depicts the same logo as above. He is in no way affiliated with Behind Barz Motorcycle Magazine or the editor of this publication and neither is his motorcycle club. We live in the same city and it will be very confusing to everyone. Behind Barz Mag has been in print for seven years. The logo was used for almost three years prior to getting a trademark seven years ago. This constitutes a trademark infringe-ment and he has been sent a cease and desist letter from Behind Barz Mag’s attorneys. Whether or not he chooses to do so...well, only time will tell.
