Once balanced, the beads that rest on the face of each die, will be the point values of that attempt. How many points can the group get in 8 minutes? Facilitated Objective: The purpose of this activity is to work on communication, give and take working relationships and working with limited resources. Needs: Each table will form a team. The below list is for each team. 1. Five begleri. Be sure that they have a flat surface on the bottom of the beads. 2. Four pieces of paracord or string. Each paracord is 2 – 3 feet in length. Tie a knot on each end of the cord leaving a 1 to 2-inch tail from the knot. 3. 15 dice. 4. One table. 5. A stopwatch or smartphone to keep time. Numbers: Four to eight participants at each table. If you have a workshop with six or more tables forming teams, you might want to get someone to help you to manage questions that will come from the tables. Time: 15 -25 minutes. Procedure: Gather the team to the table and ask them to imagine a two foot by two foot square in the middle of the table. Take all 15 dice and roll them at the same time. Be sure to keep the

Begleri – Dice Collection

Activity Objective: For a team to manipulate a begleri by using paracord to balance each bead on a pair of dice.

Tie a knot on

each end of the cord leaving a 1 to 2-inch tail from the knot. 3. 15 dice. 4. One table.

Be sure to keep the

dice in the center. If any of the dice fall off, then they can pick up the remaining die and roll them in the center of the table. At this point no one is allowed to touch the dice. Introduce the begleri. These are stringed beads used as fidget toys. These beads have a flat surface on the bottom and can stand up on their own.

Standing Balanced Unbalanced The purpose of the activity is to use the paracord to pick up each begleri and set the two beads balanced on two dice. The face of the dice in which the beads rest will equal the amount of points they collect. The team will have 8 minutes to place all five begleri balanced on a pair of dice. The boundaries are as follows:

1. All begleri have to picked up by the threading the paracord under the string of the begleri. The string can only be touched by using the ends of the cord past the knot.

2. Two people have to use the same cord. One person on each end of the paracord. (See the main picture above on page one). If there is an odd number of people, the odd person can use a cord by themselves.

3. Begleri have to be balanced on the dice at all time. If someone knocks off a begleri even after a successful attempt, the team will have to balance that begleri again for it to count. Remember, no one can touch the begleri.

4. The dice can not be moved during the activity. They cannot be racked together by the string and begleri or touched by the team.

5. Once all five begleri are balanced the game is over and point totals can be added together.

6. Each team only has 8 minutes to balance all five begleri. Teams will have a tendency to grad the paracord that lifts the begleri somewhere in the middle. This is to help them manipulate the cord for easier use. Remind them that this is not allowed. Also, remind them that unthreading the paracord could knock over the begleri. If this happens the begleri will have to be replaced back on the dice only using the paracord.

Safety: No gambling with the dice, unless licensed to do so in your state. Throwing the dice, perceived gambling. Or throwing begleri at each other or the facilitator. This is just rude people. J Facilitation: Strategy is important. If during the roll, before the game starts, only a few sixes may have been rolled. Can the team manipulate the begleri to be stretched between two high numbers? Or just focus on getting the begleri balanced and not worry about points? As a facilitator, I try to ask at the beginning what would the value of the points represent for the team. This helps set the stage for processing good questions at the end. I have found teams to work harder when there is value or perceived value in the points. When creating the paracord, be sure to have them prepped by tying a knot on each end. Leave one to two inches at the end of each cord for participants to grab. When rolling either you can do the rolling or have them roll the dice. Either way be sure to gently or the dice may be to spread apart for the begleri to reach from die to die. Observations/Questions:

1. What was the communication like during the process? Did you find the communication fast paced or reflective with a lot of what if’s? Thumbs up or thumbs down, did you find the communication working for your team? Why did you vote this way?

2. What was the experience of the string like for your team? Was it easier or harder than expected? Why or why not? What was the coordination of the give and take of the cord like within the team? Where in your organization do you find to give and take method if any?

3. What played a bigger role, skill or collaboration? Why? 4. Did you believe you had all the resources or freedoms you needed to get the job done?

Were there restrictions and if so, how did you work around them? How does limited resources or restrictions effect your job? How can it help?

Variations:

1. Give the team different sizes of paracord to lift the begleri. For example, six inch, 18 inch, 3 foot, and a 6 foot cord. All have to be used. Once used then have the team switch partners so to get a different experience working

2. As the facilitator, after the roll, stack a die on top of another. Ask that one bead has to be on this stacked tower and the other bead on a single die. If the dice tower falls over, you as the facilitator fixes that tower and stacks another tower. A good metaphor about how mistakes can compound on each other. Compare and contrast the team dynamics when doing so. I would only do this for higher functioning or healthier teams. This does cause some frustrations, but it can be done.

3. If you are limited to the number of begleri you have, you can just use one per team.

Once balanced, the team first has to remove the paracord from under the begleri to be considered done. Then the team can pick up the begleri and count their points. Keep balancing until end of time.
