Dutchess Community College offers this intensive summer program to help qualifying incoming freshmen meet their academic goals for the fall semester. Offered at no charge, this four-week instructional program, coordinated by the Office of Academic Services and Testing, provides students the opportunity to:

• Improve reading comprehension• Enhance writing ability• Advance mathematic capabilities• Build college study skills• Explore college life

The goal of this college transition program, launched in 1998, is to enable students to place into college-level courses and provide opportunities to make connections with students, faculty and staff.

Students are invited to participate based on their performance on required placement tests.Upon program completion, SmartStart students earn the right to re-test in English, reading and mathematics, with the possibility of advancing from initial course placement.

• You become familiar with our campus and the various services provided by the College.

• You get to know classmates and begin to build your college community.

• You can choose one of our convenient morning or afternoon sessions.

What instructional areas does SmartStart cover?

• Improve Reading Comprehension Foster critical reading skills needed for college.

• Enhance Writing Ability Learn to use grammar and punctuation rules in drafting college-level writing pieces.

• Advance Mathematic Capabilities Practice arithmetic and algebraic problem solving to prepare for college-level math.

• Build College Study Skills Acquire necessary skills for academic success and learn to study more effectively.

• Explore College Life Develop personal and social skills for college and make friends prior to fall classes.

What else is included?

• Peer Mentoring Develop relationships with experienced SmartStart students by attending peer mentor activities.

• Special Events Build connections with fellow classmates, faculty and staff.
