General Rules of Proportions:

• Rectangles are generally more pleasing than squares.

• Unequal divisions of space are more appealing than equal divisions.

• Proportions are expressed as ratios.

The Golden Rectangle/Section

• Has sides in a ratio of 2:3

• The short sides are 2/3 the length of the long sides

• Most people study the shapes and sizes of objects and can tell by look if something “fits”.

An easy way to approximate a golden section/rectangle is by using this

pattern of numbers:

1,2,3,5,8,13,21

A rectangle with dimensions based on two consecutive numbers in this sequence (ex. 3:5) will be close to the shape of a golden section/rectangle.

Scale - how the size of an object relates to people and to other

objects
