Principal’s Report Every week of the year is Education Week at Bega High School. Students have enjoyed a variety of activities in the last four weeks that have contributed to their development as people who can positively contribute to their school and their community. While week 3 of this term was officially Education week, with a theme of Every student, every voice, we have since seen:

Year 12 students using their voice and knowledge in Trial HSC examinations

students successfully compete in snow sports, rugby league and athletics

many student representatives lend their voice and smiles to the Transition Visits to our partner primary schools

students achieve recognition through their artistic talents in the SCLC Art Show and in the recent fLing Physical theatre My Black Dog performance, and the Bird Olympics

students practising and demonstrating their creative skills in Café 31 and HSC practical projects such as a timber poker table, bed head, roller desk, coffee table and skateboards (to name a few)

These are results that teachers sign up for when they go to university (or teachers’ college in my case). Teachers often make a difference that they cannot see and often have an impact beyond the classroom. Potential teachers are encouraged to consider the profession that is not going away, just evolving and expanding in what is delivered, how we deliver, and the types of impact achieved.

The Young Endeavour Youth Development program is internationally recognised in the field of sail training. The experiential program is delivered on board STS Young Endeavour by Navy personnel specifically selected for the program.

Over the course of eleven days, youth aged 16 – 23 learn the skills required to sail a tall ship. At the same time they develop attributes that make them more effective leaders, communicators and team members.

The tall ship environment provides a unique and powerful opportunity in which to conduct outdoor education. Youth crew are taken out of their comfort zones and provided with the tools to overcome challenges.

The program is also designed to elicit an appreciation of the strength diversity brings and instill a desire to contribute back to the community, increasing both individual and social capital.
