Before translation and implementation of the questionnaire, country specific adaptations must be made on some questions (these are highlighted in pink in the questionnaire). The module number and question number of these questions are listed below. Please tell us how you adapted, and/or whether you have any difficulties or further questions. Any further adaptation to the questionnaire needs to get approval by the Core Team; please indicate such changes below.

1/ For the roster [Q9] and parents' education questions [Module 7 ---> Q14 and Q17],  please adapt the

questionnaire using the approved mapping for the national system in your country (excel file). You do not need

to distinguish between A/B/C categories.

2 8, 19, 23

2/ For the individual respondents' education [Module 2 ---> Q8, Q19, and Q23], again please adapt the

questionnaire using the approved mapping for the national system in your country (excel file).  Make sure the

national system distinguishes between vocational and general degree. For each level, determine the number of

grades or years in that level.(If programs have a variable number of years put the maximum possible range, ie 2-4

years)

2 14

3/ For the individual's additional deploma or degree, adapt the questionnaire using the approved mapping for

the national system in your country .  Make sure the national system distinguishes between vocational and

general degrees. Do not need grade/year as this asks for completed certification.

4/  For the skills at work module [Module 5B ---> Q22], make sure the national system distinguishes between

vocational and general degrees. No skips are needed. If any level does not exsit in country system, please write"

2 7 what is the term for the first obligatory grade of school? First grade?

Does your country have a formal apprenticeship program? Can you describe how it works. Are there informal

apprenticeships?

This description of typical apprenticeships may help:

(1) Time--apprenticeships generally last 2-4 years, though some may be a bit shorter or longer

(2) Level of formality--There is usually some kind of explicit agreement beforehand that

A. there is a fixed duration (albeit with some flexibility sometimes)

B. at the end of which (if all goes well) the apprentice will be fully qualified in the occupation. That is, the

apprentice is being mentored to become qualified to hold the same or similar job as the mentor (i.e., not just

being trained in their own current position, but being prepared quite consciously to become a carpenter, baker,

mechanic, or secretary themselves, not just a permanent helper to one of those occupations). (Of course, they

will not have the wealth of experience of their mentor and all of the knowledge that comes with that.)

C. the mentor (or master) may provide (or participate in a system that confers) certification of competence.
