Dear Friends,

THIS YEAR IS SHAPING UP TO BE a transformative one for HFS Chicago Scholars. As we enter into our 24th year of serving economically disadvantaged kids and their families, we do so with the understanding and commitment that we need to and will do more.

The theme for our 2017 Annual Report of “Before and After” is fitting for several reasons. From the time our scholars enter our program as freshmen to the time they graduate as seniors, they develop from teens into young men and women. That transformation is the product not only of time, but of opportunities seized and wisdom gained through successes and failures. The growth of HFS Chicago Scholars over the past 24 years is not unlike the growth of our scholars in high school; this year, we add a record fifty freshmen to our family.

Our scholars’ hard work and growth bears fruit year after year. One hundred percent of our graduates enroll in a college or university. Over Ninety percent of our scholars make the high school honor roll each year. One hundred percent of our scholars are leaders in their school, participating in student government, sports, and other extracurricular activities.

Thanks to you, we continue to help at-risk high school students realize that they can transform themselves and the world. HFS Chicago Scholars is a force for change for motivated teens in neighborhoods where desperation can reign. We look forward to continuing to work with you and our scholars to do great things. Thank you for your generous support.

Respectfully,

2017 ANNUAL REPORT 3

WE ALL REMEMBER OUR HIGH SCHOOL YEARS. Whatever the memories — taking awkward photos, making the varsity team, being nagged by our parents to hit the books — we recall that we became better people and were ready for the next stage of our lives after those four years. Our scholars in their senior year are no different.

BRYANNA is thankful to have broken free of the “box” she grew comfortable living in. NINA found her call of service and plans to volunteer in Bolivia working with an NGO to open health clinics for communities in need. KYRIE is happy that all his hard work paid off when all the college acceptance letters came in and was happier still to know that his mom was so proud. JEREMY describes himself as “faith-full, zealous and gracious,” and cherishes the fact that he can serve as a voice for the voice-less. DANIELA thinks she still looks the same as in her freshman year, but feels her growing confidence has helped her blossom. DELILA realized early what she has a passion for: excelling in a career in hematology.

While many of their stories are relatable, what makes our scholars’ stories unique is that they found a way forward even though the odds were greatly stacked against them. Waking up early and showing up day after day to school despite being in neighborhoods plagued with gang violence; excelling while growing up in families with limited means; and having the courage to be the first in their family to apply for and attend college. If you judge experience by the mileage and not the years, our scholars are far better off after their four years in high school than before.

HFS Chicago Scholars is grateful that so many people take a continued interest in its scholars’ journeys from before to after. With-out the generous support of our donors, the loving devotion of family members, the daily commitment of our staff and regular coaching of our mentors, our scholars’ stories wouldn’t be the same. And then HFS Chicago Scholars wouldn’t be the same.

So the next time you see a before and after photo, remember that the distance traveled truly makes a world of difference.

Byron Fultz 2017HIGH SCHOOL: Marist High SchoolCOLLEGE: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

FOUR YEARS AGO, I was just a 13-year-old boy trying to find his way in this crazy city and dealing with the death of my father. Thanks to HFS, I was able to receive a great education in a safe and diverse environment. I’ve seen a lot in my life and I’m happy that HFS stuck with me through it all. HFS is more than just a scholarship fund to me; it is my extended family that has been there for my ups and downs. Through homelessness, hunger and sickness, I have been able to fall back on HFS for support. My mentors were incredibly supportive. Eric and Bill were there for me and showed where grit and hard work can take me.

If anything, HFS taught me that when you surround yourself with so many successful people, you will strive to do better and work harder. These past four years have almost felt like a blur to me, but I know for a fact that thanks to HFS I’m ready to pursue not just a career but my life with all I have.
