WHy SWEEP THE PROPELLER BLADES?Inshort,itreducesnoisewhileatthesametimeincreasesperformance.

The newer KingAir 200s can only cruise as fast as .52Mach (MMO) at28,000feet.However,atapropellerRPMof1800,thepropellertipMachnumber isover .9at cruise.This samehigh-Machphenomenon isalsoverymuchpresentduring takeoffat low forwardairspeedsbuthigherpropRPM.Asanexample,at120knotsduringinitialclimbat2000RPM,thepropellertipMachisanastonishinglyhigh.8.These takeoff, climb and cruise conditions are encountered on almosteveryKingAir200flight,andtheypushthepropellerbladessignificantlyintothetransonicdragriseforairfoilsandunsweptwings.Asacomparativeexample,commercialairlinersandbusinessjetstypicallyflyaroundMach.79to.82,andsomeofthemarepushing.90(747)andevenashighas .92 (Gulfstream650andCessnaCitationX). Thewingsweepontheseairplanesvariesfrom30to40degrees.Thetopviewofanyoftheseaircraftshowshowdramaticthesweepis(seefiguresaboveright).Withajetairplane,itsentirewingisatthesameMachnumber.However,with apropeller blade, the farther out on its diameter, thehigher theMachnumber.Addingadditionaldiametertoapropelleraddstoitstip

Machnumber,which in turnaddsunwantedadditional transonicdragandnoise.Thisofcoursedetractsfromtheotherdesirableperformanceincreasesresultingfromsuchanincreaseindiameter.Airoveranairfoildoesn’tknowifthatairfoilispartofawinggoingstraightthroughtheair,orapropellerbladebeingwhirledaroundinacircle.TheairreactsthesametoincreasingMachnumber.Merelyaddingpropellerdiameterdoesn’tnecessarilyaddproportionateperformanceimprovement,anditcanbemeasurablynoisierbecauseofhighMacheffectsattheouterpartsoftheblades.

Introducing blade sweep to the blades overcomes these drawbacks.Blade sweep allows you to increase diameter and performance whilesimultaneouslyreducingnoise.

BRIEF HIsToRy oF WING ANd BlAdE sWEEpThesweptwinghasbeenaroundsinceWillyMesserschmittputitontheME163in1943,sowhyhasn’tanybodydesignedsweptpropellerbladesuntilnow?Actually,therehavebeensomesuccessfulattemptstodesignandbuildtruesweptpropellers.TheEuropeanA400Mcargoplanehassweptwingsandsweptpropellers(atright).ItcruisesatMach0.72.Thepropellerhas8bladesandisverycostlyforgeneralaviationconsideration.

Thereareotherexamples suchas theC130J (at right),but theyareallveryexpensiveandusuallyonmilitaryairplanes.Assuch,theyinherentlydon’tqualifyformarketssuchastheKingAir.

But tothe layman, it isnotobviousthat sweeping the blades of apropellerinstalledonaKingAirthatincorporates no wing sweep itselfand flies at cruise Mach numberswell below the transonic drag rise,makesany sense. Sincenoonehasgone there in propeller design forairplanesliketheKingAir,nomarkethaseverbeendeveloped.Market iswhatdrivesresearch—newproductswhichsatisfyanewmarketneed.

Hartzell Propeller and RaisbeckEngineeringhavepartnered for thelast three decades to extend thedualboundariesof technologyandmarket.ThelatestoftheseeffortsistheRaisbeckSweptBladeTurbofanPropeller(SBTP).

ApplICATIoN oF WING sWEEp To THE KING AIR pRopEllERSurveyinganumberofrecentgeneralaviationairplanepropellers,theyatfirst appear tohave sweptblades.But theydon’t. Several examplesexistliketheHartzellScimitarpropeller(below).

The blades on these propellers have cut-back leading edges, but thetrailing edges remain unswept. The graph on page 10 compares thequarter-chord sweepsof thebladesonour current RaisbeckTurbofanPowerPropwithournewSweptBladeTurbofanPropeller.Whenviewedsidebyside(seebelow),thevisualeffectofthebladesweepstandsoutinacrowd.

dEvElopmENT ANd FAA CERTIFICATIoN FlIGHT TEsTINGFirst conforming propellers with the new blades were delivered toRaisbeck’s flight-test facilities in June2012, following2½yearsofCFDanalysesandresultingstudiesandtrade-offs.ThreedifferentpropellerswereevaluatedonafullyinstrumentedKingAirB200:thecurrentHartzellOEMpropellerfortheB200GT(93”diameter);the current Raisbeck Turbofan Power Prop (94” diameter); and thenewSweptBladeTurbofanProp (96”diameter). Incremental increasesin performance between these three were documented, and fell asexpected,withperformancefollowingincreaseddiameter.

FAA flight testing was completed in August 2012, with STC grantedin January 2013. Combined with the other elements of the EPICPerformance Package, Swept Blade Turbofan Propellers provideunparalleled performance increases across the entire flightenvelopeforeveryKingAir200everbuilt.Theyare uniquelycertifiedwithalternateFARPart25BalancedFieldLengthsfortrueAirlinelevelsofoperationalsafety.

mANuFACTuRING CoNsIdERATIoNsThe large sweep on the new propeller has required new aluminumforgingsforquantityproduction.With all this inmind, the Raisbeck/Hartzell team opted for aluminumconstructionforthefour-bladeSweptPropintheKingAir200series.Thebenefactorofthischoiceisthecustomer—affordablenewtechnology.

Development and certification programs for the King Air C90 Series(certifiedin2014)andthe350havefollowed.
