Patrick Aubriot is a French interior architect and designer and graduate
of the Ecole Camondo of Paris. After graduation, Patrick worked for a design
firm in Montreal before he decided to move back to France and found his
own firm. With his firm he works on both architectural and furniture designs
for corporate and residential clients worldwide. As a furniture designer, his
aesthetic is rooted in the work of the French masters from the 20th Century, in particular the
art-deco style. He has long believed that this period would deeply influence the contemporary
design world because of its classicism and modernity.
My five years of training were spent in a permanent museum of the 19th century, the
mansion where Ecole Camondo was located, originally built to host Nissim de Camondo’s
collection of 18th and 19th furniture. My first day as a student at Camondo, I expected to hear
a lecture on architecture and design. Instead, our teacher told us to grab our sketch pads and
pencils and follow him for a walk through Paris. We looked at hundreds of details on doors,
columns, cornices, arches…and learned that all we were asked to do for a start was to absorb
all that we could of the essence of French arts and culture offered by this city. I understood that
day how much we as designers are influenced without even knowing it by all that is part of our
environment and how much it contributes to our creativity.
This is where I first got my inspiration for design and learned a lot about the work of the
masters from the past. Since then, I have tried to hold on to their fabulous vocabulary of forms
and aesthetics. My role as a designer today is to be a filter between their time and ours. I do
not think we can actually create new forms, but rather use our inspiration to capture the forms
of yesterday and bring them into our lives. This is how I conceived the Rue de Seine collection,
a tribute to the French 20th century furniture with accents of modernity as my own signature.
