Read and follow these Installation instructions, particularly the warnings and cau-tions, before using your UMP® Bed Sentry™ monitoring system. Failure to do so may result in injury or death to a person in your care or harm to the equipment. The UMP Bed Sentry monitoring system may be defeated by a cognitively aware person, a person with only a few moments of lucidity or an uncooperative person. Properly assess each individual before the Bed Sentry monitoring system is used.Do not use this unit outdoors or in wet locations.Exercise care to insure the air sheet and hoses do not become entrapped in bed mechanisms or controls. The Bed Sentry control unit should not be placed in a flammable or oxygen-en-riched atmosphere. However, since the air sheet is pneumatically coupled, the sheet may be used in an oxygen-enriched environment as long as the control unit is located away from the flammable or oxygen-enriched atmosphere.Do not place unit under the bed or in the bed mechanism. An optional bracket (part # 0120-124) is available that can be used to attach the unit to the side of the bed or to the headboard of the bed.Clean the control unit and air sheet with mild germicidal cleaner using a moist cloth. Stanley Security Solutions does not recommend strong solvents or cleans-ers on this product. DO NOT steam-autoclave.Do not over inflate the air sheet either by manual inflation or by power cycling the control unit. Use the protective pad (part # 0141-413) when using the air sheet on a bed with an open or wire spring pan surface.

Bed Sentry V Operator's Guide

IntroductionThe UMP® Bed Sentry V is a digital electrical Bed Monitoring System with an exclusive 2’ x 3’ Air Sheet. The Monitor typically mounts to the headboard with the Air Sheet inserted beneath the mattress.

The alarm can be set to a 0 - 6 second delay before sounding. The alarm is reset by returning the resident to the bed or by using the caregiver hold button. The silent alarm option can sound the alert only at the nurse’s station when using the nurse call interface.

The Bed Sentry V is powered by the included A/C adapter.

Important Information• Be sure to read this Operator’s Guide completely before you use the monitor.

• This bed occupancy monitor is a digitally controlled device which is only effec-tive when used in a comprehensive “falls” care plan that includes assessment, skills training, and other interventions. Using this monitor on its own does not guarantee that your patient will not fall. Ultimately, the safety of your patient depends on the vigilance of staff.

About Automatic Reset

If a restless patient momentarily shifts his weight off the Air Sheet, the Bed Sentry V monitor alarm will sound. If he then returns his weight to the sheet, the alarm sound will stop, and the Bed Sentry V monitor will re-set itself automatically. There is no need to touch any of the controls of the Bed Sentry V monitor, once the controls have been properly set for a given patient.

About Sensitivity Adjustment

The time delay before the alarm sounds can be changed by setting the Sensitivity Adjustment dial. The delay can range from 0 up to 6 seconds. The usual setting is 2 - 3 seconds, but for an unusually restless patient, you may want to set a longer delay. For maximum sensitivity (no delay in sounding the alarm), set the dial to 0 seconds.

Positioning the Unit and Air Sheet

Typically, the unit is mounted to the headboard and the air sheet is positioned with the air hose pointing toward the headboard. Alternatively, the air sheet can be positioned with the air hose pointing toward the side of the bed. In either case, the air sheet is inserted beneath the mattress. An optional bracket (part # 0120-124) may be used to attach the unit to the side or headboard of the bed.

Setting Up the Bed Sentry VPreparing the Control Unit

1. Attach the AC Adaptor (power supply) cable and optional Nurse Call cable (part # 0070-093) to the correspond-ing jacks in the back of the unit. Secure each cable by twisting the ring on the connector clockwise. If desired, plug the optional Alert Button cable (part # 0707-582) into the auxiliary jack.

2. For Local Alarm only, set the LOCAL ALARM switch to ON, and proceed to Step 4.For Nurse Call alarm only, set the LOCAL ALARM switch to OFF, and pro-ceed to Step 3.For both Local Alarm and Nurse Call alarm, set the LOCAL ALARM switch to ON, and proceed to Step 3.

3. Plug the optional Nurse Call cable into the Nurse Call jack on the headwall.

4. Plug the AC Adaptor into a wall receptacle.

Preparing the Air Sheet1. Place the bed in a flat position at a comfortable working height.

2. Place the air sheet on the pan surface of the bed, under the mattress.

3. Check to see if the bed has wire springs or an open pan frame instead of a solid pan frame. If so, first apply the protective pad (part # 0141-413). Then center the air sheet, spreading it over the pan surface under the mattress as smoothly as possible. Keep the air sheet equally distant from the two sides of the bed.

4. Snap the air hose into the connectors on the control unit and the air sheet. Make sure to route the hose so that it will not get pinched in the side rails or bed mechanisms.

• NOTE: the air sheet is a single patient item.

If the LOCAL ALARM switch is OFF, and you have not connected the nurse call cable, your BS-5 monitor will not alarm at all. Failure to heed this warning could result in injury to or the death of a patient in your care.

Troubleshooting The Unit Takes Longer Than Five Minutes To Inflate

1. Check air hose connections between Air Sheet and Bed Sentry unit, making sure they are tight.

2. Check for leaks in the Bed Sentry Air Sheet. If the sheet is more than 2 years old, replace it with a new one.

Alarm Sounds Immediately After Transfer To Active Mode

1. Patient is not in the bed. Put the patient back in the bed and press the HOLD button again. The alarm should cancel.

2. Air Sheet has lost air:

2.1 Check air hose connections between the Control Box and Air Sheet.

2.2 Check for kinks in the air hose. Take the patient off the bed. Turn off the rear Power Switch and wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on. When the red READY LED goes on, put the patient back in bed and press the HOLD button to resume monitoring.

2.3 If the unit continues to alarm for no apparent reason, replace the Air Sheet.
