Aims of this morning

Encourage reflective learning

Develop greater understanding of the curriculum and competency framework

Value the importance of quality entries in your ePF

Help you to achieve MRCGP and be a better GP.

Reflection

The process of reflection is a positive active process that reviews, analyses and evaluates experiences, draws on theoretical concepts or previous learning and so provides an action plan for future experiences

(Kemmis 1985)

And…..

Reflection is a personal process that enables the practitioner to assess understand and learn through their experiences. This results in some change for the individual in their perspective of a situation or creates new learning for them.

Why is reflection important

Because effective learning wont happen unless you reflect.

Types of reflection

Thinking on your feet = reflection-in-action

Retrospective thinking = reflection-on-action

Why is this important

The outcome of reflection is learning

You need to learn to pass your CSA and AKT

You need to provide evidence in your ePF to demonstrate learning

A large part of the ePF is the learning log and your own ratings of competency

But….. I don’t like writing things down…. I do it all in my head…

Reflective Writing: role and functions

• To maximise the effectiveness of experiential learning

• To evaluate one’s practice or a learning activity

• To promote critical thinking

• To facilitate the integration of theory with practice

• To generate theory

• To demonstrate that learning has taken place

Reflective writing: description and feelings

What were the significant background factors to this experience?

• Describe the experience

– Sequence of events

– Actions

– Observations

• What essential factors contributed to the experience?

• What were you thinking or feeling at the time?

Reflective Writing: evaluation

• What went well; what went badly?

• Could I have dealt better with the situation?

• What other choices did I have?

• What would have been the consequences of

acting on these other choices?

Reflective Writing: analysis

• What were the consequences of my actions?

• How do I feel about the experience?

• What factors influenced my decision and actions?

• What knowledge influenced my decision and actions?

Reflective Writing: new perspectives and integration

• What have I learnt from this experience?

• How has this experience affected my thinking?

• How does what has been learnt by the experience relate to theories and concepts already held?

• What research is indicated and what relevance may this have?
