Pre-qualifications: Please read below to see if you meet the basic criteria for Habitat’s homeownership program.

Your Residency All family members must be United States citizens or legal permanent residents. Applicant(s) must have lived or worked in Buncombe County for the last 36 months.

Your NeedApplicants must currently be living in inadequate housing. This could include living in a structure that is unsafe, unsanitary (other than self-imposed), overcrowded, inaccessible or unaffordable. This could also include living in an unsafe neighborhood.

Your Willingness to PartnerApplicants must fully participate in the application process, attend homeownership preparation classes, work with the sponsoring organization, participate in publicity, complete at least 200 hours of required Sweat Equity (education and service), and exhibit a willingness and ability to partner in a safe and well-maintained Habitat community.

Your CreditApplicants must have and maintain good credit. We will check your credit history through a credit report. We will assess your credit and its role in the application process.

Your DocumentsUpon pre-application approval, applicants will complete a full application with the Family Selection Coordinator. At that time, applicants will need to bring documents such as birth certificates, driver’s licenses, social security cards and various financial statements and records.
