DirectionsEntering Helensburgh on the A818 from Loch Lomond, proceed down Sinclair Street. Shortly after passing the signs for Helensburgh Upper Station, turn right into Queen Street. Take the third turning on the left into Upper John Street and Craigomis (number 65) is the second house on the right. There is a sign on the stone gatepost.

SituationPositioned in the west end of the town, Upper John Street is considered one of Helensburgh’s most cherished addresses.

Helensburgh Central Station is on the main Queen Street line, with Helensburgh Upper Station on the West Highland line. There is a selection of local primary schools, with the reputable Hermitage Academy being its local secondary school. Private schooling is well catered for by Lomond School which provides facilities for day pupils and boarders alike. DescriptionCraigomis is a beautiful detached Edwardian home built under a slate roof and, formed over two storeys. It is one of a group of four villas by Robert Wemyss (1865-1955). In The Buildings of Scotland: Argyll & Bute Frank Arneil Walker writes of “four lovely model villas built 1909, by Robert Wemyss, in a sandy-coloured stripped Scots vernacular”. It offers very well presented flexible family accommodation and has immaculately presented, level gardens. Upper John Street is considered one of Helensburgh’s best addresses and is very convenient for Lomond School.

Accommodation Steps lead up from the gravelled driveway to a vestibule with outer storm door. A partly glazed inner door then opens into the reception hallway. The three reception rooms and the kitchen all open directly off this hallway . The drawing room is remarkable. It has an east facing bay window overlooking the front garden and a further south facing window. A Baxi fire is set in an ornately carved wooden mantelpiece and there is an alcove to the right with glass display shelving over a cupboard below. The sitting room has a Robert Wemyss fireplace under a wooden over mantel. The dining room has a simpler original wooden mantelpiece and a polished wooden floor.

The kitchen is very substantial and is well fitted with cream units and Corian worktops which incorporate the sink, drainer and cuttings bin. Included is a range cooker with both gas and electric burners and electric oven. Above the cooker an extractor hood is concealed in a chimney breast. There is plenty of space for both a dining table and an informal seating area by the window.
