From the Chair of Governors We have reached the end of another busy academic year a year full of successes for students and, for the whole school, the ‘outstanding’ OFSTED outcome in March. We wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone: students, staff, parents and governors for the part they have played in ensuring the very best for Beaumont students this year. The exceptional quality of extra-curricular opportunities continues to support superb teaching and learning in the classroom and this, combined with hard work and enjoyment, ensures excellent outcomes. We look forward to next year, as we continue to provide exceptional teaching and learning and as we progress the development of a range of outstanding new facilities (through the FAB Project) to match the outstanding education that Beaumont School always strives to provide. Alex Hall, Chair of Governors From the Headteacher The last few weeks of term have been as busy as ever at Beaumont. At the end of June we had our delightful Drama Club performances, the Sports’ Awards celebrations at Hatfield House and Rob’s Festival on the field led so ably by our Sixth Formers and the BSA. CED week followed immediately at the start of July, then our superb summer concert, the BSA AGM, opening of the new Sixth Form Centre and, in the last week, Sports’ Day. Thank you to everyone involved in leading the events and especially to those leading residentials. I am always delighted when members of the public compliment the students on their behaviour and maturity; during CED week this year we received even more compliments than usual! Well done to all! At the end of this term we say farewell to several students who are moving away and to several staff. We have three retirees who have served the school phenomenally well over many years. Mr E Jones retires (for a second time!) after starting at Beaumont in 1972 as Teacher of Chemistry and Science. He retired from teaching five years ago and took on the role of part time Facilities Manager. He has been instrumental in developing the FAB project which started with an approach from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (which owns the field to the east of the school) in 1996! Mrs Proudfoot joined Beaumont 37 years ago in 1977 as Teacher of English. She has held various posts including Senior Tutor Year 7 and second in English and in 2005 became Head of English. She has been a Year 7 form tutor for many years and will be hugely missed by students and staff alike for her superb teaching and her kindness. Mrs Yapp joined Beaumont 12 years ago in 2002 as Teacher of MFL and soon took on the post of Head of German/second in MFL. She has contributed a huge amount to the school, running an amazing 32 residential trips overseas, being in charge of props for school performances and being a superb teacher. We also say farewell and thank you to Mrs Martin (D&T), Ms Creamer (English trainee) and Ms Johnson (PE trainee) each of whom have been with us for one year. In addition our best wishes go to Miss Janoskova who gets married in July and Miss Ibbetson who gets married in August. I wish you all a relaxed, safe and enjoyable summer break. During CED week in Textiles we had to produce a canvas with British patterns on them. Mrs ten Dam explained what the task was and also showed us examples. After that we were free to choose our designs, colours and techniques. I really enjoyed being able to make and do what I wanted because I could change and add things at any time. We were also allowed to hand stitch or use the sewing machine according to what the material was. I really loved using a mixture of paper and fabrics as it gave a completely different texture. Overall I think that all of us really enjoyed the textiles activity. Tashsin Ali 8S

The picture frame from the side During CED week we did a wood project in which we made a picture frame out of plywood. We used lap joints to connect the corners which we achieved by chiselling layers off the plywood. We could then decorate them with pieces of MDF. I enjoyed this project because I enjoy working with wood. Yousef Mirza 9S

Our Year 11 students have worked with vigour and flair throughout the year to achieve a high standard in their final Investigative task for the coursework. Students were always well prepared with a wide range of appropriate ingredients and skills, often having practised at home in order to finalise their recipes. I was so impressed by their enthusiasm with many of them producing three products within the hour not to mention the washing and clearing up! The exam is over and the pupils have left for the summer break but on their behalf I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Michaels our Technician for her continued help and support throughout the course. The Food room is always prepared and organised to meet the Hygiene and Safety requirements with specialist

equipment quickly on hand to aid students with precision and efficiency. Mrs Bailey

The current Year 10 GCSE group have also worked consistently hard to complete a variety of Practical and Investigative topics such as:

Dietary needs for children under five,

Encouraging Teenagers to eat more fruit and vegetables

Ready meal comparisons

These three short tasks will contribute to 30% of their final grade. The standard of work produced has been

outstanding with great attention to detail and presentation. Here is some of their work:

News from past Textiles students: Hannah Reardon has just completed a four year Degree in Fashion and Marketing at Huddersfield, here is a photograph from her collection. Vidal Sasson sponsored their final catwalk show and Hannah's work was spotted on the runway. Vidal Sasson are interested in using it for their international photoshot! Congratulations Hannah. Mrs ten Dam

We had a letter back from Kent College, Young Fashion Designer UK competition, Commended certificates went to all entries, Rasha Khayi, Felicity Lumley, Lucy Hoare, Tammy Sapir, Francesca Lobue, Edie Owens. Highly Commended certificates were given to Megan Robinson and Lucy Dury. The work was described as being a credit to them. Mrs ten Dam

Beyond Beaumont ………

We did a project on sustainability in Food Technology. Sustainability means keep something going over a period of time. We chose our own groups to work in. The first task we were given was to choose a team name which would represent what we would produce. In the third week we had a practical which was making bread and butter pudding. This is a simple but a succulent British pudding. It was a challenging task as you had to make sure everything was prepared in advance and we had a time limit. In the other weeks we made dishes like risotto, trifle and soup. Risotto was an amazing dish because it was quite tricky to get right. The trifle and soup were really easy and fun to make especially the tasting! Next in our groups we had to make a plan which of the dishes we wanted to cook and we had to adapt those using the unused foods in our cupboard or fridges. Then we made the final product. Fortunately we took pictures of what we made then we produced leaflets, posters and power points of what we had done and showed it to our class. Overall it was great fun, I learnt so much and so many skills like designing and planning ahead. I love Food Tech! Thomas Brown 9E

Our current Year 11 GCSE Textiles students were really creative and hard-working and also supportive to each other. I want to commend everyone for their hard work. Thanks too must go to our Teaching Assistant, Nikki Davies for her enthusiastic support in the Textiles lessons. The group were fantastic and very proactive; visiting London exhibitions and attending extracurricular workshops too. It is always worth looking at the Victoria and Albert Museum for their summer schools. Here is a show case of some of the work. Congratulations to you all. Mrs ten Dam

On Tuesday 1 July I took part in the school cooking activity with Mrs Bailey. During the day our task was to successfully produce Sushi. In the morning we learnt a little about the country and the traditions and then went into making the Sushi. We learnt how to chop vegetables, soak them, and flatten rice onto seaweed (Nori). We were also allowed to add in wasabi to add some flavour and the technique used was really interesting. We made a Nori roll using a bamboo rolling mat made with special sticky sushi rice, seaweed and vegetables inside. We also produced another type of sushi (Californian roll) made with a mould and sushi rice which was shaped into a small rectangle; we were allowed to decorate the rice with sesame seeds, Sashimi salmon (supplied from Billingsgate market), carrots, cucumber, sweet chilli, radish and ginger sliced into extremely thin slices. We then moved on to making a Bento box which was really exciting. The box was ready made, supplied by Feng Sushi and we had to decorate them with traditional pictures. We then sat down for a chopstick challenge which was really fun. We learnt how to use the chopsticks correctly and we had to pick up peas using the technique we had learnt. We also learnt about the different types of chopsticks e.g. a traditional Chinese chopstick would be flat ended whilst Japanese are pointed and much more difficult to use. Whilst doing this we tried some green tea which I didn’t particularly like! After that we learnt some more about the culture and tea ceremony and had a quiz. Overall I think that the day was really interesting and fun as well as finding out about the culture and making traditional food using fresh and raw ingredients. I really enjoyed doing something I wouldn’t normally do and would like to thank the parents that provided some of the equipment and ingredients. Tahsin Ali 8S

Thursday 26 June saw our Year 10 boys take to Herts University for the County U15 Volleyball Championships. The team have worked together for the past three years with great dedication and this year was to be the last opportunity to take the U15 crown. Undefeated at the District tournament the boys went into this year’s County Championships confident of a top three finish. The competition involved eight boys teams and included a team from Stanborough School who had won the competition for the last two years. The day started well with convincing wins in the first four games. We then played a more competitive game against St Clement Danes School which we won 17-14. Next up was the crunch game against Stanborough, win this and top two was a certainty. The game started well and saw the boys take a 5-1 lead. Stanborough struck back and took the game to 8-7 in their favour. Beaumont returned the blow and, with solid play from all boys on court, managed to win the match 12-11 with some excellent hitting from Jacob Bockenhauer. The boys won the competition with a convincing win in the last match of the tournament having won all seven matches. Well done to all players involved! Mr Jump

Further Beaumont successes also include: Ellie Rice - a first class Honours from York University for History Sam Went – a 2:1 in Politics from York, Katherine Calvert - a first in French and German from Warwick Becca McMillin - a first in Psychology. Congratulations to everyone who has graduated this year and well done for all your hard work! Tennis player James Wilkinson 9L has won the U14 East of England Regional Qualifier and will be playing in the National Final of the Road to Wimbledon in August. This is the second year running James has won a place in the final at Wimbledon. Well done James.

We have had some unexpected visitors lately to our Science labs, namely a very proud mother duck with her twelve baby duckings! The duck, unbeknown to us, has made her home in the pond near the Science labs and keeps popping in with her brood to check the students are working hard!! We are looking forward to watching the chicks grow over the coming months.

Music PE – Volleyball Champions! Our New Additions

As well as holding the Summer Concert last week and making an appearance at the BSA AGM, our Music Department has also been performing at various venues over the past few weeks including Cunningham Hill Junior School and the Jersey Farm Day Centre. Here is a quote from a letter received following the Jersey Farm Day Centre performance: “What I find remarkable is that, as students move on, you manage to recruit younger ones to take their place and maintain the very high standard set. Our members not only appreciate the music but also the way the self-confident students mingle and talk with them afterwards”. Well done to all!

It is that time of year where we will be sorting out the containers that students have left. We make every effort to return named containers, but we still have so many containers that need to be collected. Please ask your child to come to the Food room if you think they have left anything in their Food lessons? At the end of term we will give any unclaimed containers away. Many thanks. Ms Michaels

Routes into Languages On Thursday 26 June, Cambridge University undergraduate Robyn Bennett came to speak to the Year 9 Fast Track German class as part of the Routes into Languages “Adopt a Class” scheme. Robyn, who studies German and Spanish, is about to spend her third year abroad, split between an internship at a marketing company in Berlin and study at the University of Buenos Aires. During her year, Robyn will be writing a blog for the class so we can follow her progress. Mrs Lutz

Mandarin – Opportunity for Parents

Book Club members have been reading the Carnegie shortlist and on Wednesday 18 June we discussed the books, ate cake and voted on our favourite book. Miss Jackson was our guest of honour and joined in the lively discussion in the library at lunchtime! Beaumont Book Club could not decide between "All The Truth That's In Me" by Julie Berry and "The Bunker Diary" by Kevin Brooks.

The Bunker Diary was then announced as the winning book on Monday 20 June. After being rejected for its lack of hope, Brooks struggled for a decade to see his winning teen novel in print, a fictional diary of a kidnapped boy held hostage in a bunker.

CILIP Carnegie winner Kevin Brooks, speaking at the ceremony, said: "There is a school of thought that no matter how dark or difficult a novel is, it should contain at least an element of hope. As readers, children, and teens in particular, don't need to be cossetted with artificial hope that there will always be a happy ending. They want to be immersed in all aspects of life, not just the easy stuff. They are not babies, they don't need to be told not to worry, that everything will be all right in the end, because they're perfectly aware that in real life things aren't always all right in the end. To be patronizing, condescending towards the reader is, to me, the worst thing a Young Adult fiction author can do." Thank you to all the students and parents who baked cakes and supported the recent book & cake sale. £110 was raised towards a new sofa for the Library. The money raised from the half price book sale will go to the Herts Children's Book Group which is a charity that has been set up to encourage children to read.

Thank you and happy reading! Mrs Mayer-Khan

You will already be aware that when we return to school after the summer break we will have changed over to our new catering company, Chartwells. Any balance on your son/daughter’s current catering account at the end of this term will be automatically transferred over to their Chartwells account ready for September. The preferred method of loading money on to your son/daughter’s catering account is by using the Tucasi online payment system which can be accessed via the school website and there is a minimum catering top up value of £15. If you have not already set up an account on the online payment system please contact the Finance team by emailing [email protected] to request a letter containing the required online link code and instructions detailing how to set up the account. Once your account is set up you can use it to pay for catering, school trips and various other school activities. You can also view catering purchases made in school and check the catering balance. Any queries, please contact the Finance team on the email above.

In September, we will be welcoming our first ever Mandarin Chinese assistant, Miss Zhu, to Beaumont. As well as running courses and clubs for students, there will also be an evening class for parents. So, if you have ever wanted to learn Chinese, here is your opportunity! The beginners’ course will cost £90 for the term (10 x 2 hour sessions) for BeauSandVer parents. For further information, please contact us via www.bsvcourses.co.uk. Mrs Lutz

Year 7 and 8 Trip to Germany

Rob’s Festival – Saturday 28 June It has been such a privilege to work with so many talented and committed Year 12 students for the past five festivals. Seeing them develop their ideas through to fruition is incredibly rewarding both as a teacher at Beaumont and also as Rob's school friend. I know he would have been delighted to see their entrepreneurial skills put into action. The Prince's Trust was a charity that Rob was involved with which is why the festival is so significant. It is the only festival in the district, perhaps the county, that is run by young people for the local community where they are given the freedom to create an event using their own imagination and vision. Each year, we are able to make a donation to the trust, or more specifically the Rob Williams Enterprise Fund that supports young people in the music and IT industries. On behalf of Rob's family and friends, I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone that supports and attends the event each year. I would also like to thank the BSA for the hours and hours of work they do to support us in the running of the festival each and every year. Miss Dundjerovic Helping to co-ordinate and organise Rob’s Festival 2014 can only be described as an incredibly fulfilling experience. I am hugely grateful to have taken the opportunity of getting involved in raising money for both the Prince’s Trust and for Beaumont and working alongside my fellow sixth formers and teachers in achieving a result that, despite a few initial weather worries, exceeded our expectations. We successfully managed to provide students, parents and many families with a day of great music, some intense competitive football and various exciting stalls. Having spent more than a year in the process of organising the day, the feeling of witnessing everything come together was really special and made me fully appreciate the constant support of students, teachers and parents who put in considerable effort in order to raise money to improve the school. I can only encourage those entering Sixth Form next year to get themselves involved in Rob’s Festival as not only do you gain the opportunity to raise money for a charity, but you also work with many people within the Beaumont community to be creative, organise your own event and broaden your skills as a student - the possibilities are endless! During Enrichment week, 83 students and 11 staff went to Germany ……. For many students, it was their first visit to Germany. We had a great week, blessed with glorious sunshine. On Tuesday, we visited the beautiful town of Cochem on the Moselle where we rode on the chairlift and had a tour of the castle. The following day we were in the bustling city of Cologne, home to the impressive cathedral and also, many students’ highlight of the trip, the Lindt chocolate museum. There was also an opportunity to look around the town of Bad Marienberg where we were staying and to all order an ice-cream in German Thank you to all the staff and students for making the trip such a great success. Here are some of the students’ highlights: “I loved going on the chair lift and looking at the views” Kayleigh, 7R “My favourite bit was getting six samples of chocolate at the Lindt factory” Will, 7R “I liked the Germany trip because we had loads of ice-cream” Ashleigh, 7S “My favourite part of the Germany trip was when we saw the cathedral because it was really amazing” Matt, 7S “The most exciting part was when we went up the chair lift in Cochem” Alex, 7N “We went to lots of places like the wildlife park. There was a crazy goat!” Albert, 7N “I would go again because I enjoyed the trip” Esaa, 7S

It was good to meet many parents of the New Year 7 students due to start at Beaumont in September at the end of June. We received a good response to the Year 7 Family BBQ which will be held on Saturday 13 September. Tickets are already selling well! You may purchase tickets from reception.

Maths Challenge

Fleetville Transition On Monday 23 June Year 8 and 9 students took part in a transition activity day at Fleetville School, involving a number of local primary schools and led by a professional theatre group. Their role was to work with a small group of year 6 students on a variety of tasks. They needed to use all their drama skills to get their groups working together and to encourage them to contribute and share their experiences. They also led dance routines with their groups and learned a number of phrases in sign language. The aim of the day was to make Year 6s feel more confident about their transition to secondary school and to build up their self-esteem in general. All the Beaumont students were a credit to themselves and the school. They were enthusiastic and friendly and we received great feedback from the lady who led the day. A big thank you to Lucy Ripley, Matt Sims, Alfie Abel, Phoebe Andrews, Guy Miller, Joe Watson, Fergus Sherwood, Beth Hardisty, Lois Markey, Patrick Quinn, Greta Geller, Esme Robinson, Sam Carro, Adele Stemple, Mae Lankshear, Emily Earl, Tamsin Sandford Smith, Charlotte Lord, Hannah Carruthers, Fiona McFarlane and Kate Chamberlain. Mrs Hawkins

The BSA worked in conjunction with the Year 12s and Rob’s friends to host the Fifth Rob’s festival in the grounds of Beaumont School. In spite of a short torrential downpour, the crowds stayed on and kept arriving throughout the afternoon to support this event. It was wonderful to see festival-goers of all ages enjoying this event, which raises funds not only for the school but also the Prince’s Trust. See the picture gallery on the school website. From 8am onwards, the school field was turned into an amazing festival venue with a professional music stage and sound system together with marquees, bouncy castle, giant slide plus a wide variety of stalls and games - many of which were run by the students. The food stalls were varied this year. Alongside the popular BSA BBQ, there were popcorn, sushi and puddings stalls together with hot and cold drinks and snacks. Something for everyone! For some of the performers, it was the first time they had played to such a large crowd at an outdoor festival with such an outstanding sound system. This sound system is one of our major outlays for the event. If any parents have contacts we could use to get a subsidised rate for future events then we would be delighted to hear from you! The BSA would like to thank:

All the parents, staff and students who helped to set up and run the BSA stalls which comprised the BBQ,

bar, soft drinks/teas and the ever-popular, tombola and raffle

The teams of people who helped erect the marquees in the early part of Saturday morning with a special

thanks to St Albans RFC and St Albans District Scouts

All the volunteers who assisted in the somewhat “unenviable” task of tidying up!

Jason and Colin, the caretakers, for their invaluable help throughout the day

Parents and companies who donated raffle prizes: Elemis, Glorious Brands, Office, Baskervilles Handyman

Services, Ginger, M&S

Tracey Douglas from Glorious Brands who printed the programmes

And finally, thanks to Aitchisons Estate Agents for their amazing advertising campaign and financial support

for this event

Sincere thanks go to all these people, and many more behind the scenes, without whom we could not have held the event. An amazing total of £5500 was raised which will be divided between Beaumont School and the Prince’s Trust. Once again, we have had great feedback especially from those who came along for the first time and also from parents and staff who helped for the first time – some have already asked to help next year! So why not get involved? – keep a look out for BSA diary dates for next year! Thank you and well done to all! From The BSA

The Maths Department wishes to congratulate our Year 7 and 8 students who took the Maths Challenge in May. They have achieved 13 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze certificates. Of these two Zak Smith and Jamie Biswas qualified for the Maths Olympiad. Zak gained Distinction and a Silver medal Jamie gained Distinction and a Bronze medal Only 260 from all entrants receive a medal Very well done to all of these pupils. Mrs Forster

Hertfordshire Student Leadership Conference On Friday 27 June the Hertfordshire Student Leadership Conference took place at the University of Hertfordshire. Schools from across the district were invited to show how they use technology in lessons and at home to enhance their learning. In addition, students were able to attend workshops to learn more about digital footprints, new educational apps and find out about a school where they bring their own devices to school. Mr Tatham, who leads the teaching and learning team in the student voice group, worked with a number of dedicated students to prepare our ‘market stall’. Charlie Garnham and Rakhin Amin presented on the Raspberry Pi club which is producing a radio controlled car. Rachel Andrews and Ffion Williams had surveyed Year 7 to find out how they thought that technology would look in the school of the future. The Year 8s, Eleanor Foster, Lois Markey and Lewis Figg, had researched with fellow Year 8s the advantages and disadvantages of technology in schools. The Year 10 representatives, Lily Katterhorn-Black and Chloe Dickinson-Macrae, presented on how twitter and blogs are used in GCSE teaching in Music and Drama to enhance learning. Our journalists for the day were Paul Knight and Alice Fraser who recorded the day on flip cameras and by interviewing other students to get their views on technology. The students left with lots of ideas for how technology could be used at Beaumont. The students involved did a great job in representing the school and completing their fact-finding mission. Mrs Hawkins

EUREKA Challenge On Wednesday 9 July, nine Year 12 students took part in a national Business and Economics competition called the Eureka Challenge at the University of Birmingham. The students were asked to put forward a report and presentation that would outline their plans to launch a ‘Quintessentially British’ product into a developing market with a GDP per capita of less than $15000 per annum. Beaumont put forward two teams who competed against 20 others from across England. Team one presented their ideas on launching Robinsons Squash in Brazil with an innovative water filtering system that would enable the customer to reuse the bottle. Team two put forward the Ella’s Kitchen brand of baby food to be distributed and sold in China. The two teams were asked to compete against each other in the first round with judges including the Chief Examiner for Edexcel and the Economics and Business principal examiner. Team two were successful in the first round and went on to compete in the final against the winners from all the other schools. The announcement of the winners was extremely tense with Beaumont’s team two coming out on top for the first time in the six years of the competition. In a closely fought battle, the team achieved a fantastic overall score of 27/30. The team of Natalie Man, Tom Giles and Jacob Lockhart Lister were praised for the style of presentation and the incredible depth of thought that went into the decisions regarding the marketing, social, economic and environmental impact of launching a new brand abroad. One judge commented that the quality of the report was so high that it represented the best she had seen in her years of judging the competition. The winners received a cheque for £250. Congratulations to all members of the team on their hard work. Mr Goodwin

WaterAid One very early morning in July we volunteered to take part in WaterAid’s “To Be A Girl” Campaign in collaboration with Affinity Water. The idea behind the campaign is to raise awareness of the fact that every single day throughout the developing world girls have to get up at first light, walk to the nearest water source and collect the water for the family. This may involve a long walk across difficult terrain, sometimes carrying their own body weight in water – water so dirty that it could kill them. At first you realise how hard it is for Ugandan girls when they collect water as they have to wake up at 5am every morning to walk 2.5 miles to the nearest water source and back again. You certainly start to appreciate having a tap and what those girls do every single morning. I am really glad I took part in the WaterAid Affinity Water Walk. I experienced only half of just how difficult their job is. Taya Patel 9L Congratulations to all the girls who took part: Stephanie King, Morgan Jeggo 10R, Taya Patel and Carolyn Barnard 9L.
