FROM THE DESK OF MR JORGE RUIZ-MESA

How to make our pupils’ education relevant.

In a recent article published on the website

topunivesities.com, it listed various job titles

which did not exist five years ago, yet today are

in high demand in the marketplace. Social

Media Manager, Content Manager, Data Analyst

and User Experience Manager (UX) are jobs I

had never heard of when I arrived at Beaulieu

College. A report by the World Economic Forum

reveals that around 65% of the jobs that

primary school pupils will be doing when they

finish high school do not exist today.

I know it has almost become cliché to talk about

21st Century skills but the more I read about it the more I realise that

everyone is embracing this trend except the institution that most needs

to develop the workforce of the future, our education system. We spend

a good deal of time training pupils how to answer questions, but not

enough time is used to teach how to ask a question. Before you can

solve a problem, you must be able to critically analyze and question

what is causing it. This is why Critical Thinking and Problem Solving are

essential skills in need of development. Cloud computing has become a force to be reckoned with in today's

workplace. Research shows that, in the next five years, about 40% of

the workforce will be made up of non-permanent and remote workers.

Many large companies have teams of employees working together from

different offices across the world. Collaboration is therefore a skill

required by the workforce of the future. Initiative and Entrepreneurship

are essential skills for our youth.

We need to be teaching them leadership skills and encouraging

them to take initiative and risks.

Sir Richard Branson is quoted as saying “Communication is the

most important skill any leader can possess.” Business leaders

have reported that the majority of high school graduates today are

“deficient” in communication skills. Effective Oral and Written

Communication are more relevant today than ever before. I was

privileged to watch our HOD of English, Mr Brouard, speak to an

attentive grade 8 audience about Oral Communication skills. His

inspirational talk posed questions such as: Can you present your

argument persuasively? Can you inspire others with passion? Can

you concisely capture the highlights of what you are trying to say?

Billions of terabytes of data are created every single day around the

world. Accessing information that is reliable has become a

challenge for our pupils. Data Analysis and Assessment is also a

key skill that our youth need to develop.

I could go on mentioning keys skills that our future workers and

entrepreneurs need to be successful. There is a stark contrast

between these skills of the future and the focus of education today.

Instead of teaching students to answer questions, we should teach

them to ask them. Instead of preparing them for an exit

examination, we should prepare them for life.

It makes me immensely proud to say that the management and

teachers at Beaulieu College are investing time and resources to

equip our pupils in developing these and other skills through

initiatives such as Project Based Learning. I am optimistic that such

initiatives will not only radically transform the future of education

and the workforce, they will also transform the world we live in.

The Grade 12 Business Studies pupils attended a talk at Steyn City Schools’

company faces. Valuable information was taken from the workshop which

pupils can apply in their forthcoming examinations.

Mrs Karen Trenor at the end of this term. We will be welcoming three new teachers at the start of Term 2.

NETBALL ACHEIVEMENTS

Netball season has started with some excellent achievements by pupils and staff alike.

Staff achievements

Mrs Heyl

Selected as u/14 Gauteng Coach

Mrs Wood

Selected as u/13 Gauteng General Manager

The annual District 13 trials, hosted by Kingsmead College this year, certainly created a lot of excitement

amongst our netball girls. Attended by 32 high schools, with an average of 80 girls per age group, the trials

certainly brought out the best in the 25 individuals that were selected to represent the College. Each player

played 2 matches whereafter the top 4 per position progressed into the second round. Here the top 28 players

received another opportunity to win the selectors over. Finally, two district teams - two players per position -

are selected, and awarded the opportunity to compete at the Gauteng trials. Twelve out of our 25 girls who

participated were ranked within the top 28 players in each age group.

Girls who made the top 28 per age group and competed in the second round of their age group’s trials:

Tayla Prommel u/16 Gemma Meerburg u/17 Akhona Kambule u/17

Jennifer Puntis u/18 Gina Biddlecombe – u/18

up with all the other top players from districts all over Gauteng.

BEAULIEU COLLEGE NEWSLETTER: 15 MARCH 2018

Our juniors had their first league fixture on Saturday 10th March. One

fixture consists of three debates. We fielded a very inexperienced

team of grade 8’s, who, despite their nervousness and lack of

experience, held their own magnificently against tough competition.

Our speakers were Isabella Page, Anathi Tshose, Londiwe Rikhotso,

Zipporah-Rose Nadasen and Kimaya Govender. Melissa Heyes was

our floor speaker. The motions were interesting and gave the girls

chance to show their newly developed skills. We lost the first two

debates narrowly and the third was a closed round. The results will

be released at the end of the sixth round. We are very proud of the

girls and the adjudicators commented on their blossoming

potential.

On 1 March, Beaulieu College hosted a CANSA Sprayathon. We raised R2 651 for this worthy cause. Thank you to

everyone who supported the event.
