PRESENTATION | SELECTION

SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES IN THE BEAUJOLAIS

OINGTPerched on a rocky outcrop, Oingt is a former castrum which today features on the list of the “Most beautiful villages in France”. Carved out from the ochre rock, its narrow streets are lined with arts and crafts workshops and from the top of the village offer a view over the entire southern Beaujolais.

SAINT-AMOUR-BELLEVUENestled at the heart of the Beaujolais Villages vineyards, Saint-Amour-Bellevue is a haven for lovers – and epicureans. The view of the hillsides, the traditional vineyard architecture and gourmet restaurants invite you to set down your suitcases for an unforgettable stay.

THEIZÉHere, the countryside takes on an air of Tuscany. With its châteaux and cobbled streets Theizé is a gem set in a verdant background of vines. The famous cross of the stonemason journeymen takes pride of place in the village centre, like a nod to the village’s origins.

VAUX-EN-BEAUJOLAIS A village otherwise known the world over as Clochemerle! People visit it for the legendary eponymous novel by Gabriel Chevallier, published in 1934, and for its giant trompe-l’œil, inspired by the drawings of Albert Dubout. And they return for the magnificent view of the vineyards and the Alps.

PRESENTATION | EVENTS DIARY

CRUS DU BEAUJOLAIS FESTIVALEvery April, the ten crus making up the Beaujolais Villages appellations delight visitors for the space of one weekend, each year in a different village. In 2016, the 36th Fête des Crus will be held in Régnié-Durette, a village with two churches and itself a Beaujolais Villages cru. Tastings of “1001 wines” from the ten villages, a festival of French music and tastings of old vintages (booking required) will be taking place throughout Saturday and Sunday.30 April and 1 May 2016www.fetedescrus-beaujolais.com

CADOLES ET SENSSeven gourmet routes between vines and châteaux to discover the area known as the “Beaujolais des Pierres Dorées” – the “Beaujolais of the Golden Stones”. You can opt either for the picnic excursion (€30 for a basket of local produce for two), or the gastronomic excursion (€42 for a menu served in ephemeral restaurants in various emblematic towns and villages). As for the wines, a selection of around 60 wines is waiting to be discovered. Departures from Pommiers, Saint-Julien, Saint-Jean-des-Vignes and Villefranche-sur-Saône. Download your reservation from the Web site.14 and 15 May 2016www.cadolesetsens.fr

DÉZING FESTIVAL Reggae, hip hop and electro, as well as chanson française and brass bands: an eclectic programme is in store at Beaujolais’ own “Woodstock”, the second edition of which is scheduled for July at Pizay aerodrome. No American-style sodas or mass-produced beers here: the organisers promote the region’s producers, including numerous partner winegrowers who will let you taste their delicious products while local chefs cook up some flavoursome cuisine.22 and 23 July 2016www.festival-dezing.com

ROSÉ AND SUMMER NIGHTSDid you know that the Beaujolais also produces rosé wines? These fine, fresh and aromatic wines are recognisable by their delicious notes of red berries and citrus fruit – the smells of summer. Incidentally, in July, the villages and châteaux of the “Beaujolais of the Golden Stones” will be seeing the world through rosé-tinted glasses, with a busy programme of culture, art and gastronomy. Needless to say, winegrowers and rosé wines will be part of the fun!Month of Julywww.tourismepierresdorees.com

FÊTE DU PARADISIn Beaujolais, “paradis”, or “paradise”, is the name for the sweet, red juice that runs out of the press at the first pressing. Every October, the village of Odenas, which lies within the Brouilly appellation, celebrates the end of the grape harvest and the traditions of the Beaujolais for one day (and night) to the sound of brass bands. The programme includes pressing grapes using ancestral methods, sausage cooked in grape pomace, a picnic, and tastings of paradis and, of course, some delicious Beaujolais. End of grape harvestwww.feteduparadis.com

BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAUXThe tradition of “vin nouveau” – young wine drunk in the same year it was harvested – dates back to antiquity. The more recent Beaujolais Nouveau tradition grew up thanks to one grape variety, Gamay, which quickly releases its aromas. But be warned – there is not just one “Beaujolais Nouveau” but many, the style differing according to the terroir and the grower’s own hallmark. Why not come and taste them in the region where they’re made? In November, the whole region is one big festival. It’s called Beaujolais Days!Week starting on the 3rd Thursday in Novemberwww.beaujolaisdays.com

EVENTS AND BEAUJOLAIS | LYON

LES BISTROTS BEAUJOLAISParis, New York, Munich, Chicago. Thanks to the Bistrots Beaujolais network, the spirit of Beaujolais has spread to every corner of the globe. The list comprises 298 restaurants, 61 of which are in Lyon. They serve deliciously paired food and wine in the friendly atmosphere typical of the Beaujolais.

The Bistrots Beaujolais award was created in the 1950s by Parisian journalists who had fled the Occupation during the war and had been won over by the pleasant atmosphere of the bouchons lyonnais (traditional Lyon restaurants).www.beaujolais.com, tab “Pleasure”.

BEAUJOLAIS CRUS AND LYON TOWN HALLSIn 2010, nine Beaujolais crus wed one of Lyon’s nine arrondissement town councils, the tenth marrying no less than City Hall itself! Since then, the happy couples regularly celebrate their union at numerous food and wine festivals when the people of Lyon are invited to meet the winegrowers.

MÂCHON AND ITS “POT” OF BEAUJOLAISMâchon is a plate of cured sausage and tripe formerly served to the canuts (silk workers) by the bouchons lyonnais (typical Lyon restaurants) for their mid-morning break, washed down by a pot (small bottle) of Beaujolais. Today, a modern version is served in numerous restaurants in the city or by winegrowers, accompanied, for example, by small goat’s cheeses!

BEAUJOL’EN SCÈNEBarrel-rolling, barrel-broaching at the stroke of midnight, tastings of the new vintage, a chance to discover the 12 Beaujolais AOCs – every year, Lyon celebrates the arrival of the Beaujolais Nouveau right in the city centre, Place des Terreaux.www.beaujolaisdays.com

INSTANTS BEAUJOLAIS (30 MAY-5 JUNE 2016)A Beaujolais festival taking place in all good restaurants in Lyon. The programme includes brunch at the museum, winegrower’s lunch and tastings of great wines – no fewer than 70 events in all in some 50 partner restaurants!www.instants-beaujolais.com
