The Forget Never Project First World War Commemoration

This year Beauchamps High School is involved with the cross-curricular Forget Never Sacrifice and Legacy Project commemorating the end of

the First World War and following on from the school's involvement with the Forget Never Project in 2014 which commemorated the start of the First

World War. On 7 and 8 April 2018 a few of our students and staff visited Meaux in France to visit the largest World War One Museum in Europe on the site of the Battle of the Marne in 1914. Two of our students wrote about their experiences:My trip to France by Amy and Hannah F:Going to France was an amazing trip! It was a very memorable experience and will stay with us forever. First of all, when we arrived in France, we drove straight to Meaux and the museum dedicated to World War One (Musee de la Grande Guerre.) We went into

On the 15 June some of our students, from Year 7 to Year 10, and staff went to the Wat Tyler centre as part of the Forget Never Project to listen to Colin and Wendy Parry. They talked about their life experiences and the work they do with the Foundation 4 Peace organisation that they set up as a result of losing their son Tim twenty-five years ago in the IRA bombing of Warrington town centre. This event was also attended by Stephen Metcalfe MP who is the Forget Never Patron. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions and they talked about the need to expand their work across the country. If you are interested in finding out more about the work they do then please view the www.peace-foundation.org.uk website. After the talk, the Forget Never Project, Colin and Wendy Parry and the Football Alliance came to school to present us with the Peace Plaque and a specially commissioned football to mark the centenary. Receiving the Plaque were Mr Harper, Mr Leslie and the Year 8 football team that took part in the football tournament that was organised as part of the commemoration events earlier in the year.

the museum and looked around at the displays. One of my favourite parts of the museum was laying in one of the beds that the soldiers would’ve had to sleep in during the war. The beds were extremely uncomfortable and made me think how the soldiers must have felt – how could they sleep? By laying down it really helped me understand the conditions the soldiers had to sleep in and how tired they must have been. After we looked inside, we went outside to look around. At specific times, different things were happening involving the army re-enacting what would have been happening during the war. This included gun shots being set off; the sound was deafening – it would really hurt your ears if you didn’t cover them. This made me think how the soldiers must have felt during the war, they would’ve had the deafening sound drill through their ears millions of times. The trauma they must have experienced would have been unreal. Then, some French students from Meaux visited us. Along with the rest of the Beauchamps students, we made lots of new friends with whom we hope to keep in touch. We also improved our French by hearing correct pronunciation and practising what we know speaking in French. Meeting up with the French students has definitely benefited me! In the evening we went back to the luxurious hotel and went out for dinner. All in all, it was a fantastic day!Following a fantastic first day, the next day was excellent as well! On our way back to England we stopped off at two places: Thiepval Memorial and the Lochnagar Crater. The Thiepval Memorial was breath- taking. Seeing all the names of the soldiers that were never found was astounding; 70,000 people from the Somme were never found to this day. Whilst we were there, we looked for our surnames and looked for the regiments we thought our family may have been in. I did not find anyone, however, some of my friends found someone with the same surname. Finally, we went to see the colossal crater. It was much bigger than I

expected and very interesting to look around. Visiting France with ‘Forget Never’ was amazing and I really enjoyed learning about the war and some of the various battles that took place. It was a fantastic experience that I will always remember.

Congratulations to our six Year 10 students who have been selected as our new Head and Deputy Head Boys and Girls for 2018/19.Our Head Boy is Cameron W and our Head Girl is Eleanor M. Our Deputy Head Boys are Karthik N and George P and our Deputy Head Girls are Terri L and Erin C.

Congratulations and Good Luck to our New Head Boy and Head Girl for 2018/2019

Introducing Cameron, our new Head Boy: Being Head Boy for me is not about status, nor about reputation. For me, it's my way of giving back to the school that has given me so much more than just an education. I want to continue to allow the students at Beauchamps to thrive in success until they leave and to feel privileged to have been guided and pushed to their greatest potential.I am serious about maintaining and improving the high standards that we hold at this school, so I've made it my mission to ensure that every student in this school is offered many opportunities and is educated in a safe and respectful environment. I want to encourage students to embrace any challenges they may face and view them as an opportunity rather than an obstacle, as, when you think of it, challenges are just opportunities hidden as hard work.I want to be seen as a perfect role model for the younger students to look up to and bring a voice to any unheard issues in the school, becoming a bridge from them to the teachers.I am looking forward to improving the school and putting all of my time and effort into ensuring a bright future for Beauchamps.

Introducing Eleanor, our new Head Girl: The process of becoming and then achieving the respected role of Head Girl was challenging; but it has already been a confidence-boosting experience. From the start, I was intrigued by what the role entailed; an application letter and interview, then – before I knew it – we were making two minute speeches in which we displayed our principles and what we could bring to the table

as individuals. I emphasised three beliefs, all reasons for which I wanted to enter this challenge in the first place: mental health, community and a more sympathetic teacher-student relationship. All of these I think are personal to students and could be given more time.In an outstanding academic school, I noticed a gap in Beauchamps from the

perspective of a student having gone through four years at the school myself; this was the acknowledgement that millennial students have to cope with more pressure and workload than perhaps past generations ever did. To work towards overall student happiness, I would love to introduce an open attitude towards students’ personal lives – after all, we spend more time at school than anywhere else. I intend to so this by introducing mental health awareness weeks, exam coping clubs, or even by having people come in to talk to students in assemblies.I think that to make myself an approachable person in this position would enable me to give advice and support to, in particular, younger students. I am hugely looking forward to working as part of one team with the senior prefects and deputies, as I think that, put together, we can truly

bring about positive differences to a fantastic secondary school.

Introducing our Deputies: Erin C: “I am so excited to be working with my fellow deputies, Head Boy, Head Girl and all of the staff and students. I am a Corporal in the Air Cadets, so I have some experience with leadership, planning, problem solving and working as a team. I also run a ukulele club every Tuesday in the Music room. I am a school councillor and was a peer mentor in Year 9. I highly encourage all of the students to join clubs, be members of teams and simply get the most out of your time here at school.”Terri L: As Deputy Head Girl, I am honoured and privileged to be representing Beauchamps both in and out of school. When arriving in Year 7, I never thought I would have the responsibility that I have now been presented with in this role. I think of myself as being talkative and approachable for other students, therefore they should feel comfortable in coming to the other deputies and I when wanting to voice any issues they are faced with. I will try my best to invest 100% effort into all talks that I am given in order to help the school to be the best it can be.Moreover, I look forward to helping the new Year 7s have a smooth transition from primary to secondary.

It’s A Big Responsibility Advice From Those Who Know!

What was your experience of being Head Boy in Year 11?I thoroughly enjoyed being Head Boy; it was an amazing experience working in harmony with staff and pupils to help build a stronger community within the school and having the opportunity to meet and interact with the amazing people across the school community that I wouldn't normally

have had the chance to, if not for the position I was in. Being Head Boy gave me the opportunity to enhance several personal attributes, which is what made me who I am today and which I will maintain for life. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to explore areas within myself I have not yet discovered, and I ended up doing things that I never thought I could; from giving tours to parents or guests to giving speeches at presentations. It was a great honour to be Head Boy at this school and I would happily do it again. What skills do you think it has furnished you with which you can use in later life?Becoming Head Boy has set me several furnished skills which I can later use in life such as confidence and speaking clearly in front of groups of people. The role teaches you how to speak to different kinds of people from children to the Mayor of Basildon and giving speeches in front of large groups; personally, I gained more confidence throughout the year. You also gain several leadership skills and how to work as a team, as you must lead and control prefects and fellow students, but also to work as a team and listen to everyone’s ideas to come up with best possible outcome to help move the school forward. These skills will always be useful in later life and being Head Boy really helped them flourish. What advice would you give to the new Head Boy and Head Girl in their roles? My advice would be: if you want to become Head Boy/Girl, be yourself; by being yourself the role becomes more natural only if you want the best possible outcome for the students, staff and the school. There are a great deal of responsibilities and several people do look up to you, even when you’re out of school it’s a role that lasts 24/7; you will be the face of the school. Be a confident leader, willing to create ideas from everyone’s viewpoints, to make as many people as possible happy because you want the people around you to have faith in you and always willing to work with you, which creates a happier community if everyone feels like their voice has been heard. Report by Ben O

What was your experience of being Head Girl in Year 11?My experience of being Head Girl in Year 11 was a great honour. This was because it provided me with a great deal of responsibility, on which I thrived with. The experience was very positive, and

enabled me to learn and improve both new and existing skills, which shows how the role will benefit me later in life, particularly as I begin to think about applications in the workplace and my potential future employers- making my end goals more achievable as I have already been given the opportunity to overcome many issues now that others will face in later life. What skills do you think it has furnished you with which you can use in later life? One of the most vital skills I think that the process of being Head Girl improved for me was my confidence. I would have described myself as relatively self-assured before holding this title, however, my confidence was definitely enhanced through this as I become more familiar with the flair require to public speak with ease, as well as having the ability to comfortably present my own ideas and beliefs. Additionally, my organisation definitely improved throughout taking on this role. This was because I had to manage my time in order to account for extra events I became involved in. Both of these skills will have many benefits to me in my future life, especially once I move out of the school environment and towards that of a working one, further grounding my preparation for the real world. What advice would you give to the new Head Boy and Head Girl in their roles?I think the greatest piece of advice I could give to the new Head Boy and Head Girl would be to stay true to yourself. Understandably, this sounds very clichéd, but in essence I mean that you do not need to conform to a particular ‘role’ and there aren’t – within reason – any particular set rules you have to follow, and therefore you can hopefully make (and take!) as much (or unfortunately as little) from this responsibility as you wish. It is important to be as approachable and personable as you possibly can be as this will encourage your peers to exchange their ideas with you, and for you to liaise with members of staff in the easiest, most effective way.Report by Lauren H

Student Debate ‘Trial by Jury is the Best Guarantor of Justice’

On the 24 May a debate took place between Year 8 students and Year 12 students. During citizenship lessons with year 8 we have been studying a law module and several students volunteered to take part in a debate against the A level law students. The motion was 'trial by jury is the best guarantor of justice'. Both teams presented their arguments well and stood up to cross examination and challenging questions from the judges and the audience. Mr Symes, Mrs Butler and ex-student Hannah Marsh, who has just finished the first year of

PSHE Knife Crime Activity Presentation Year 9 Taught About The Dangers In a joint initiative between Essex Police and Essex Fire and Rescue, officers have been presenting in schools about Knife Crime. Every student in Year 9 saw this presentation about knife crime which continues to be a problem in Essex and London. Students were asked for reasons why children may carry knives. Most stated for protection. The officers then went on to state that 65% of children who carry a knife have the knife used on them by someone else, therefore challenging the perception of protection as the statistics show that you are more likely to be injured with your own knife.Students were introduced to the concept of ‘joint enterprise’ meaning that anyone that is with a person who commits a crime using a knife

could be found to be as guilty as the person that actually uses the knife. The only sensible option for children is to avoid others that may be carrying knives. Students also watched some very thought provoking video clips of parents, friends and other family members who had been affected by knife crime. The sessions ended with students being given contact numbers where they could anonymously report knife crime and name children who were suspected of carrying a knife. They were introduced to www.fearless.org and to Crimestoppers (0800 555111).

Beauchamps’ Strangest Things Year 7 Become Budding Producers!During the course of the year, I have been working with an enthusiastic group of Year 7 students during additional English sessions after school. We have been working hard to develop our passion for English and originally focussed on developing our comprehension and creative writing skills. After a few weeks, it became apparent that we all shared a common interest … Stranger Things. Through discussions about the pupils’ interests

a law degree, were the judges. They were impressed with both teams but particularly praised Hannah (year 8) who displayed great skill responding to the arguments. It was a close decision (2-1) but Year 12 won the Judge's vote. Year 8 won the audience vote.

Congratulations goes to both teams on a very successful event.Report by Mrs Mower

Students listened well throughout the presentations and asked sensible and relevant questions to the officers. We hope to welcome the officers back in the Autumn term to speak with the new Year 9 students.Report by Mr Windeatt

and hobbies both inside and outside of school, we decided to create the season 3 trailer of the popular Netflix show entitled Beauchamps’ Strangest Things. Together we spent weeks storyboarding the scenes, discussing characters and developing our script. Once we were happy, we were ready to act out each part. With the help of Mr Jacobs and a few special edits from Mr Oakshott, we were happy with the final product. We were fortunate

enough to be able to share our trailer with the staff and parents and it was a huge success. I am extremely proud of the students hard work and commitment to the project over the year. Report by Miss S Bailey

Sports News Beauchamps Athletics Hits New Heights!

TogetherEveryoneAchieves More

This year the PE Department identified an opportunity for improvement and success in our athletic teams as numerous year groups showed great potential in an array of events. As a result we have offered extended extra-curricular opportunities throughout the school week for students to attend and improve their performance; Tuesday Morning - Long Distance Running ClubTuesday After School - Athletic Club (All years & events)Thursday After School – Jump Club (High Jump & Long Jump)Friday After School – Throwing Club (Discus, Shot, Javelin & Hammer)The students have all bought

into this improved offering of training and have fully committed to all athletics clubs, c o n s i s t e n t l y attending and improving in the process. It has been clear to see that their hard work has clearly paid off as

results in both the Regional Track & Field Cup Final and most recently District Athletics have broken school records! Our Inter Boys reached the school’s first ever Athletic Regional Final earlier this month and showed a glimpse of how much they have progressed over this year as they finished 5th in the East Region and collected a massive total of 398 points! A special mention has to be said for the following students who top scored on the day:1.Cameron W: 40 points2.Ethan H: 39 points3.Cameron B: 38 points4.Charlie S: 34 pointsAfter this success the Department were keen to find out how the rest

of the school athletes have p r o g r e s s e d thanks to this i n c r e a s e d training. The end of year District Athletic c o m p e t i t i o n provided the perfect platform for us to show our talents, and it’s safe to say our students didn’t disappoint. Thanks to some amazing individual performances (listed below) as a school we were able to astoundingly finish 2nd in the District. This is a fantastic achievement for all athletes who competed as it is the highest that Beauchamps has ever finished and every athlete who took part on the day should be proud of their efforts. On Friday 22 of June I was lucky enough to represent my school in the 1500m. Before the race I was not nervous but when I was actually on the start line and the starter held his gun up, the adrenaline was pumping through my body which spurred me on. I did exceptionally well by coming first place with a new PB OF 5:09. During the race and when I had run past the stands, I heard the bell signalling for the last lap I knew I had to really go for it and on the last straight the adrenaline came back and with my friends behind me, I crossed the line and looked back and found the person who had come second was a good 15 seconds behind me. That was it. I was district Champion for 1500m!

What Our Students Had To Say...Not only did I have a huge smile on my face - all my friends were so happy. I was proud of myself and had done my school proud as well.Report by Miller P

On Friday 22, I competed in the Year 7 long jump at the Districts Sports. Before the event, I felt really nervous. I knew I was representing my school so I wanted to do the best of my

ability. My personal best was four metres forty, but I didn’t know if there were better jumpers than me. I had my practice jump and felt like I did well, so my nerves went away a bit. When it came to my first jump, I unfortunately had a no jump. I moved my run-up back, only to get another no jump. I felt like just jumping to get a score, but I still wanted to do as best as I could. I moved my run up back slightly more, then ran as fast as I could to get a new personal best, four metres fifty. When I heard my result, I was so happy to have done it for my school and was pleased to have improved my jumping length. After the event had finished for me, I was so happy to come first place, but then someone came from hurdles and beat me with five metres! It didn’t

On Friday 22 June I competed in the Basildon Year 7 Athletics Districts racing in the 1500m and 4x100 relay. I did exceptionally well in the 1500m and came first. I was very pleased as I received a 3 second PB and got a time of 5:24. Before the race, I was a little nervous when stretching and warming up but I just focused on my race and didn’t let anything put me off. A few minutes before my race, I spoke to some of the other runners competing as well as doing a few sprints. I felt ready and I just wanted to run however, when I heard the gun go, I knew I just had to go for it and forget about all my nerves. After the third lap I heard the bell go and I knew I just had to go for it and push through the line. I heard all my friends cheering for me as I sprinted to

Districts was an amazing experience and I am glad that I was given the opportunity to participate and represent the school. I was so proud to find out that I beat my personal best at high jump (1.25m to 1.35m) and in 200m sprint (35 seconds to 28 seconds) which I hope to improve as the years go by. I plan to help other students achieve their fullest and help out with any sporting events that any Beauchamps student takes part in. Districts is a great learning experience and any person selected to take part should be proud that they have been selected and know that losing or not coming first allows you to use it as a learning step. With thanks to the PE department, I was able to improve my techniques and use those skills to get selected and come second in high jump, 200m and relay. One of my favourite events was 200m as the girl who won (Woodlands) trains outside of school and is a regional champion but to get 28 seconds while she got 27 is something I would never have expected. This is because last year she got 28 seconds whilst I got 33. Report by Latisha M

Districts was a great experience and I was very pleased to be picked for the second year in a row, along with having a great team to compete with. The event was at Basildon and the team were very supportive and encouraging to the competitors that were running and people doing field events. The team did very well and produced an amazing set of results in which many runners and field event people came in the top eight and helped us come second overall as a school. I felt very nervous going into the Basildon Districts as I felt I needed to improve my placing in the 1500m run. I was happy I was representing the school and running with one of my friends in the race but when it came to Discus I was more relaxed and was happy with my throws and this meant I placed well. Overall, I was really happy with

the finish line with all my power. Once I finished I was so pleased with myself as not only did I win and receive a new PB but I qualified for the next round and I’m competing for Basildon in the Essex Schools. I cannot wait to race again and hopefully I’ll be successful. Report by Millie C

my placing in 1500, coming the highest I ever have, with a second. Throughout my race I had many teachers and team members cheering and encouraging me, especially on the last 100 metres to the finish. My goal next year is to get back on the Districts teams and improve my placings in Discus and 1500m and improve my time in 1500m. All throughout the year we have been training very hard for this event with running club and we would like to say thank you to Mr Byford for staying with us through training and supporting us in all of our races. Report by Sophie J

At first I felt really nervous because I didn’t think I would do well, but when I had my first throw in javelin I felt a lot better because the girls from the other school were feeling the same as me, so in the end it didn’t feel like I was in a competition. When I threw my second throw it was a fail so I became more nervous again, but now I think back I don’t know why I was nervous because I actually did really well. Nearer the end I was excited because I wanted to know where I came and four days later I found out I came second! My future goals are to try and achieve to become an Olympian. I have always wanted to be in the Olympics because when I first started walking, I was already running. When my mum started to see potential in me she put me into Basildon Athletics Club, where I got taught how to throw a javelin and run really fast. Ever since I joined the club, I’ve been trying to achieve new sports goals and I’ve been looking forward to competitions and the school Districts. Report by Carley W

Ernst Young Apprenticeships

On Tuesday 12th June, along with 40 other students from other schools in our area, we arrived at Ernst Young on London's Southbank. It was a pleasant day where we learned a lot about what apprenticeships involve within Ernst Young and other companies in the London area. Ernst and Young were very welcoming and encouraging at the event and

made sure that we understood the essentials needed for interviews with them so that we had the opportunity to succeed in our future. They provided us with lunch looking out over the river; it seems like a

nice place to work! We discovered what it could

be like to work in London and many other areas of the UK and in other countries. We all enjoyed the experience of learning about this huge company and this will hopefully help us decide on what we would like to do in the future, offering another option for life after sixth from.Report by A Lewis and J Jarrold

Well done Year 12! Report by Mrs Linton

Cash Services WorkshopOn Thursday 5th July during a one-hour workshop, all year 12

Economics and BTEC Extended National Diploma students had the opportunity to find out more about the banking system and cash within the UK Economy. This was held by Cash services, founded in 1982, Cash Services has supported the UK cash industry for 35 years acting as a focal point for the cash cycle and offering strategic direction for the collaborative elements of wholesale cash management. Working closely with the Bank of England, Her Majesty’s Treasury and The Royal Mint, Financial Institutions, Cash in Transit, Cash Processors and the ATM Network, Cash Services ensures that authentic banknotes and coins circulate efficiently and effectively to

meet public demand. All students were engaged and gained a great deal from the event. “The session gave me a greater insight into the importance of cash and how there has to be strategies to avoid disaster. The session covered the printing of cash, talking about who controls the process of making, distributing and controlling the flow of cash in the economy. I never realised how much of this is in the hands of the private sector, especially in ensuring the availability of cash, which is controlled by the companies that deal with the logistics. Also, the security measures taken to ensure counterfeit notes are spotted and taken out of the flow of cash are stricter than I initially thought, especially with the introduction of the new polymer notes that are harder to copy. I initially

wondered why the company Cash Services existed, but the job would be too complicated for a government to do alone.” Harrison L, Year 12 Economics Student
