*This tree contains many remaining moot questions because Beatrix Downs’s proximate forebears on both sides were born in slave-holding states. Before the Civil War, free African Americans were often recorded without racial designation; whereas enslaved persons were not identified by name in the United States Census, were not allowed to marry, and often were not recorded at all. Slave-holding families practiced miscegenation starting in the 1600s. In the early 1800s, approximately 500,000 enslaved persons were forcibly removed from Virginia to the Deep South. Many official vital records and genealogical reports from slave-holding states are correspondingly missing, cryptic, uninformative, unintelligible, illegible, evasive, false or contradictory about basic information. 1Spelled “Dons” in the Domesday Book. 2Spelled “Ower Sclostre” in the Domesday Book. 3I could find no independent confirmation for the Family Central Network report that Henry VII Tudor fathered Margaret Neville 1466-1527/33, and descriptions of his marital fidelity count against it. 4The United States Census of 1870 lists all five of these individuals as living in the same household in Mississippi. I

could find no birth certificates for any of them. 5Margaret Downs (c1800) similarly lacks a birth certificate, yet both she and Robert Downs (c1800) were bequeathed a land deed in Prince Edward County Virginia in their mother’s will, drawn up 1799, before she married John Hamilton. Perhaps this is the source of Reverend Downs’s family’s wealth. Otherwise it is possible that his father (Robert Downs 1828-1898) or grandfather (Robert Downs c1800) was a free African American slaveholder. 6The United States Census 1880 lists Clinton Schavers’ parents as born in Virginia. I could find no birth records that confirm this. 7Family residence 1910: Bridgeport Ward 1, Belmont OH; 1940: NYC. 8The remarkable alacrity with which Beatrix (1892 GA-1969 CA) married Margaret (1885 GA-1920 FL)’s widower Minor Francis McCleary (1876-1925) following Margaret’s death lends credence to the family lore that Margaret died of arsenic poisoning administered by Beatrix.

9The name “Desposyni” designates individuals who are claimed to be or to descend from blood relatives of Jesus Christ, through either of two lines: (1) siblings, including James, Joseph, Simeon, Judas and two sisters; (2) offspring of his union with Mary Magdalene, including Josephes, Tamar [Damaris] and Jesus II.
