Samantha Lane, King University
Nick Jahn introduced our
speaker, Samantha Lane from
King University.
Samantha began by noting
that King University has been
in Bristol for over 150 years. It
began as King College and in
2013 changed its name to King
University. It offers more than
80 majors, minors, pre-
professional degrees and
concentrations in fields such as
business, education, digital
media, nursing, forensic
science, and the humanities.
Samantha said that most of the students who attend King
University are adults. King supports the Drive to 55, an
initiative by the Tennessee state government to increase the
number of adults in the state with college degrees or
concentrations from 32% to 55% by 2025.
Samantha noted that when you’re choosing a college or
career-development program, it’s important to understand
the concept of accreditation - which measures the quality of
an education program. There are two types of accreditation:
1) Regional accreditation by one of six regional accrediting
bodies. Most regionally accredited institutions are non-
profit colleges or universities.
2) National accreditation by one of 50 national accrediting
bodies. Most nationally accredited institutions are for-profit
vocational or career-training schools.
Everyone who attends college has a different goal. Not
everyone wants an MS, a BA, or an Associates degree. King
offers many different certification programs to meet these
needs.
Samantha said that everyone planning to attend college or
professional school should fill out the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to see what support they might
be eligible for. There are a variety of grants and low-interest
loans available to students.
At the same time, Samantha noted that before taking on
too much debt, you should be sure that the school you want
to attend is a good fit for you and that it will give you the
education or training that you need. She said that a good
source of information is the East Tennessee College Alliance
- a consortium of colleges and universities in East Tennessee
dedicated to helping adult learners.
President Oliver Smith thanked Samantha for her talk, He
noted that we have had a number of excellent speakers
focused on various aspects of education, and he thanked
Bob Boothe for arranging them.
President Oliver announced that two members of the Club
have completed Rotary College - Jason Fields and Wade
Knapper. He asked them both to say what they had found
most interesting and informative about the sessions. Jason
said they helped explain how Rotary worked. Wade said
they helped him pick and avenue for service within the club.
President Oliver said we are battling attrition this year
because a number of members have had to leave the Club.
He also said Mike Bailey is doing a great job as Chair of the
Membership Committee. We have six new members in the
pipeline. Todd Wright, our newest member, will be at the
front table next week. Please be sure to introduce yourself.
President Oliver commented that in light of our push to
attract new members, Leo Knight is one of the most
important people in the Club. Leo is the head of
Entrepreneurs of Knoxville, and he and Bo Sutton are
organizing a joint event for us with them. They hope to
Club Business and Announcements (continued)

Roger Alan Wade & Sparkle Motion, The Early Morning
String Dusters (Sam Carey’s band); and Second Opinion
(Larry’s band). Larry said he is excited about all of them. The

they were students at the Episcopal School.
Kevin Foley announced that Briston Maroney, the lead
singer in Subtle Clutch, is competing in the early rounds of
American Idol. He will let us know how Briston does.

Gary Ricciardi announced that the Club will match all Paul
Harris contributions between $50 and $250 from now until
February 28th. President Oliver encouraged all members to
take advantage of this opportunity. He said our goal is to
have all of our members become Paul Harris Fellows so we
can be a 100% Club.
Leo Knight announced that the Club is creating a new
website. The new site will:
Tell visitors and prospective members what Rotary is
and what our club does.
Highlight how our club is different and why people
should join.
You can view the new site at www.beardenrotary.org. If
you would like to help with the site, please contact Leo.
