Sunflowers and festival continue to grow at Ohio KOA

COSHOCTON, OHIO - The goal behind the second annual Coshocton Sunflower Festival this weekend at the KOA Campground is simple: Continuing to offer attractions that appeal to locals as well as those from outside the area.

The event will feature a sunflower exhibit, allow people to pick and cut their own sunflowers, unique photo opportunities, food trucks, beer garden, craft vendors, live music, hayride, wagon train ride for kids and other activities.

The campground is also known of its annual fall corn maze, in its fifth year. Co-

owner Ryan McPeek said the company that assists with them setting up the maze had done a sunflower festival elsewhere and he thought that would be a good fit for another local attraction. While

Coshocton is know for such events as the Hot Air Balloon Festival and Apple Butter Stirrin' Festival, August can be a bit of a down time.

"We were looking for another festival to add to the

Coshocton community for later in the summer," McPeek said. "We were just looking for a gap in festivals and have something that could bring people in."

More than 2,000 people attended the festival last year and organizers are expecting an additional thousand this year.

McPeek said the festival will feature 44 different kinds of sunflowers. There are more than 70 different kinds of sunflowers overall. There are fields for display and props will be available for pictures. Other fields will be available for people to pick and cut their own flowers. One section is called The Wilds, which features all the different types mixed together. The Sea of Yellow only has yellow varieties with each row a different specific type.

Planting a mass amount of sunflowers is similar to planting corn, and a corn planter is used. McPeek said they work the ground, fertilize and plant. A big difference for them is that they are constantly having to change the seeds in each bin because they plant so many different types.

The festival is dependent on the weather, but McPeek believes they'll be just fine this weekend.

CampCalNow promotes Sierra Gold Mine Tours and Campgrounds

INDUSTRY NEWS

AUBURN, CALI. — CampCalNow President Dyana Kelley highlighted the merits of visiting Sierra Nevada gold mines in her latest Fox News report.

The July 24th Fox 40 segment, which can be viewed at https://fox40.com/2019/07/24/get-outdoors-northern-california-mines/, provides a mix of California’s early mining history with tips on things to see and do along with information on campgrounds that can serve

as great base camps while visiting the mines.

The California Gold Rush, of course, sparked the largest migration in U.S. history, as hundreds of thousands of prospectors came to the Sierra Nevada to work in the mines.

Kelley’s sightseeing recommendations include the Kentucky Mine Historic Park and Museum in Sierra City, the only gold mine that still runs its original stamp mill.

“You hear the boom, boom, boom of the mill during the

day,” Kelley said, noting that the mill offers two tours each day as well as concerts in the mine, which make the trip especially worthwhile.

“It’s a wonderful way to experience history and have a nice weekend,” Kelley said, adding that Sierra Skies RV Park in Sierra City can be used as a convenient base camp for the trip.

Kelley also recommends Empire Mine Historic Park in Grass Valley, one of the oldest and richest mines in the Sierra Nevada. The park includes tours of the historic Empire Mine estate and garden.

Inn Town Campground in Nevada City can be used as a convenient base camp for

travelers planning to explore the Empire Mine.

Of course, no gold mining tour would be complete without a visit to Marshall Gold Discovery State Park in Coloma, which is located along the South Fork of the American River where James Marshall discovered the gold nuggets in 1848 that ignited the California Gold Rush.

“This is where that first golden nugget was found in the city of Coloma,” Kelley said, adding, “Coloma is also

known as a ghost town. It’s a National Historic Landmark.”

Coloma Resort is also located adjacent to the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park, providing RV and tent sites and rental accommodations, and makes for a convenient base camp for visitors to the Coloma area.

Coloma also features a museum and the American River Nature Center, which works to preserve the natural and cultural resources of the American River and Cosumnes River watersheds.

Kelley also discussed the Kennedy Gold Mine in Jackson, one of the deepest and most productive gold mines of the Mother Lode, as well as the Gold Bug Mine in Placerville, which also features a museum, blacksmith demonstrations, access to the mine’s historic stamp mill, and hiking trails.

Kelley concluded her gold mine travel report by highlighting the CampCalNow’s camping guide, Camp-California! The Camper’s Guide to California and Nevada, which is available in print and digital formats through Camp-California.com.

During the past three months Kelley has appeared on Fox 40 four times. She has additional television appearances scheduled to take place during the coming weeks.

Kelley’s initial report aired May 13 and included 3 minutes and 37 seconds

of airtime. The segment, which can be viewed at https://bit.ly/2KATePZ, focused on family friendly day

hikes within three hours of Sacramento.

In another report on June 3, Kelley talked about caving

destinations, a key focus of Camp-California.com's 2019 campground directory. The 5 minute, 26-second segment, which can be viewed at https://fox40.com/2019/06/03/get-outdoors-exploring-california-caverns/, included a separate segment featuring a Fox News reporter who actually visited Moaning Caverns, the largest single cave chamber in California. Caving is an activity featured on the cover of this year’s camping guide, Camp-California! The Campers Guide to California and Nevada.

Her June 26 report, which can be viewed at

https://bit.ly/2xpBEGX, highlighted five campgrounds from the Sierra Nevada to Sonoma County, all

of which feature rental accommodations, so you don’t need a tent or RV to camp there.

CampCalNow’s media outreach efforts include regular outreach to television and radio stations as well as newspapers and magazines and engagement with bloggers and social media influencers.

“We’re doing everything we can to raise awareness of Camp-California.com and the outdoor hospitality industry,” Kelley said, adding, “These television reports are raising awareness about the private campground industry in general.”

Chip cards – the longest launchby Art Lieberman

THE LOSS OF $800 MILLION A YEAR TO THE ECONOMY HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON EVERYONE’S LIFE. IT MEANT PRICES OF GOODS AND SERVICES HAD TO RISE AND REMEMBER WE’RE TALKING ABOUT A YEARLY RISE.

NEARLY 5 years ago, as soon as the news broke to the credit card industry, I wrote a story explaining that the US was about to launch a new method of protecting credit card transactions. This method had been tried in Europe for several years and it was tremendously successful in halting the fraudulent transactions by counterfeiters. In the US, we were getting robbed, to the tune of $4.5 BILLION in the year 2015, We decided to take action that year, with a new system,

The system was named EMV, or Europay MasterCard Visa, and it involved putting

small chips in all credit and debit cards and forcing transactions to be done by Personal Identification Numbers or PINS. The pin transactions would replace signatures on cards, which was grist for the mills of counterfeiters of credit cards.

There were several problems from the onset. First, the public was not notified of the change which

would cause all their regular cards to be replaced. ALL OF THEM!

Then the credit card industry wasn’t fully informed, because they would have to market new credit card terminals which could recognize the chips and, of course, merchants didn’t know that the millions of machines they had would have to be replaced.

The whole idea was worse than the switch from VHS tapes or audio CDs to DVDs. At least you could still use the old equipment and media. With this switch ONLY machines that accepted the

chip cards could be used – eventually. That is the key word. What no one really told us at the onset is that the launch would take FIVE YEARS and that confusion would reign for that long.

Also, consumers were never really informed why the hassle was occurring. The loss of $800 million a year to the economy had a

HUGE impact on everyone’s life. It meant prices of goods and services had to rise and remember we’re talking about a yearly rise.

2019 is the fifth year, and by year’s end all credit and debit

cards will carry the chip. The only non-chip transactions will be made over the internet or by phone and more personal information will be needed to complete those, such as addresses and zip codes of

the cardholder.During the five

years, the industry has advanced technologically. Chip card readers can now be inserted into computers and used together with “virtual” terminals to do transactions. The same is true for “dongles” which can be inserted into cell phones to do transactions. There are now remote terminals which can be used by

restaurants for table-side transactions or deliveries by restaurants or by taxi drivers to accept card transactions.

So, by the end of this year, the long awaited launch will be over and we can all settle

in to the new EMV method of transactions. Until, of course, they come up with using your fingerprints or reading your eyeballs to identify you. Ooops, that’s already begun!

Rep. Tim burchett

Tenn. Rep. Burchett to give speech at OHCE in November

CONGRESSMAN Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., will give the welcome address at the "Opening General Session" of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds’ (ARVC) Outdoor Hospitality Conference and Expo (OHCE) this November.

Burchett, one of the newest members of the House RV Caucus, represents Tennessee’s 2nd District, which includes Knoxville, the host city of OHCE 2019.

The OHCE opening general session will take place on Tue., Nov. 5, and will kick off two days of education at OHCE. In addition to the congressman’s welcome, the opening general session will also feature a look at the trends in the

industry and the upcoming week of educational sessions, networking events and the expo.

“We are very excited to have Burchett on hand to assist in welcoming our OHCE attendees to his hometown

of Knoxville,” said ARVC President and CEO Paul Bambei. “This part of eastern Tennessee features a strong campground community that provides tremendous economic and tourism value and the outdoor hospitality industry in this part of the state has a strong ally in Burchett. He understands the strength of our industry and the impact we have on the local, state and national economies. ARVC and our industry partners join in thanking him for joining the House RV Caucus and for his continued support to ensure our industry remains strong.”

Burchett met with ARVC representatives during this year’s RVs Move America Advocacy Week, hosted by

ARVC’s industry partner, the RV Industry Association (RVIA). It was during that meeting Burchett agreed to become a member of the House RV caucus and to speak at OHCE 2019.

Crucial to helping Burchett join the RV caucuses was Heather Blankenship, owner of ARVC member-park Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort at Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

As a constituent of Tennessee's 2nd District and the co-chair of the ARVC Young Professionals, Blankenship discussed the value of the outdoor hospitality industry to Burchett’s district, state and the nation, convincing Burchett to join growing caucus.

With more than 30 members to date, the House RV caucus is a growing group of national legislators playing a vital role in championing the interests of the outdoor hospitality and RV industry at the national level.

OHCE 2019 is a four-day event from Nov. 4-7 in Knoxville and includes more than 40 educational seminars, a trade show with more than 120 vendors, tours of local campgrounds, certification workshops, ARVC’s Awards of Excellence program and more.

For more information about OHCE or to register, visit arvc.org/OHCE.

“I am here to beg of you to think about the impact on the land,” said Les Mickle, who said he was neighbor of the proposed glamping property. Caitlan Cullen, who represents Under Canvas, is to the left of Mickle.

Montana company eyes Verde Valley for glamour camping business

INDUSTRY NEWS

BILL GRAY ROAD, Arizona - A glamour camping - aka “glamping” - plan to put 125 luxury camping tents in a remote area near the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness brought out 30 to 40 concerned neighbors and residents to the secluded location 11 miles out on Bill Gray Road last week.

“If you walk back there, you see special country, relatively undisturbed, That’s why we all bought out here,” explained

Les Mickle, whose property would abut the glamping site. His comment received a round of applause from the onlookers who arrived in cars, trucks and all-terrain vehicles.

“I am here to beg of you to think about the impact on the land,” he continued while holding one up of the glamping company’s maps to the gathering of people.

He pointed to Sycamore Canyon Wilderness across the road, expressing concern that campers would bring ATVs

and continue to destroy the area by driving on unmarked roads.

“What about the land? I learned that the Forest Service can’t take care of the land without the public’s help. How are we going to monitor all these different people every day.”

Caitlan Cullen, who represents the Montana-based Under Canvas glamping company, thanked Mickle for his comments and said “We do want to be good stewards of the land.”

“We hope to be good neighbors,” she continued. The 80-acre site includes two acres of development with the priority-designed 125 tents, a main restaurant

and a social tent for campers, a main fire area, water and sewer, and gravel roads.

The tents are built on platforms so grading under the tents is not required, she said. The company provides

actually mattresses, comforters and pillows to provide for a luxury camping experience, she said.

The biggest gasp from the crowd came when she told them there would be 135 vehicles driving the remote red rock dirt road each day when the camp sites are open.

Cullen said the glamping would be a seasonal operation at this location and only open part of the year.

Cullen invited people to

look at one of the other glamping sites the national company operates and how they integrate with those communities.

She said the Under Canvas glamping company was founded by Sarah and Jacob Dusek in 2009 and now has more glamping sites in Montana, Yellowstone, Zion, Moab, Grand Canyon, Glacier, the Smoky Mountain, Utah, and Mount Rushmore.

“Typically we are neighbors to National Parks,” she said. “We are neighbors to Forest Service land as this place is.”

Cullen said that the main access point to their glamping site is going to be discussed with the U.S. Forest Service. Two U.S. Forest Service officials attended the meeting on Tuesday.

Right now the project is in conceptual stages, Cullen said. But approval of the project would have to go through a Yavapai County use permit public review process.

Cullen said her company has been working on this for a couple of months. Under Canvas already has had a pre-application meeting with Yavapai County staff, which is a step before making an “official commitment.”

“For whatever reason, if we move off the site in two or three years, the site would go back to nature,” Cullen said. “You wouldn’t even be able to tell we were there.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville North KOA Campground has entered into a new partnership with Music City Raceway designed to promote business development in Goodlettsville, Tennessee.

The new partnership allows both the campground and the raceway to cross-promote their offerings to both campers and racing fans, increasing the visability of both businesses. The partnership will also benefit other businesses in Goodlettsville by bringing more visitors to the area.

Indiana couple converts farm bins into unique overnight lodging

INDUSTRY NEWS

ABOVE: Kathy and Dave Blake have converted two grain bins into small cabins at their Parke County campground, Peacefull Waters Campground, near Bloomingdale. Here, the Blakes pose for a photo in one of their converted cabins on Friday RIGHT: Cabins that were once grain bins and smaller one-room cabins are reflected in the water at Peaceful Waters Campground on Friday in Parke County near Bloomingdale

BLOOMINGDALE, INDIANA - On the inside, red cedar wood lines the circular walls and ceiling.

Beside a red cedar post queen bed is a small table, its top carved from a cedar tree stump.

The view from inside this unique cabin near the Parke County town of Bloomingdale is of a four-acre private pond.

It’s the outside that’s unlike most campground cabins.

“I was able to get two old grain bins to convert into cabins,” said Dave Blake, who along with his wife, Kathy, own Peaceful Waters Campground, located near Bloomingdale about 4 miles north of Rockville on U.S. 41 in Parke County.

“I saw a similar idea in a state park in Illinois, so I thought it was a pretty good idea.”

The bins came from the Lee

Farm, west of Rosedale. In fact, one of the bin cabins is named the J. Lee Cabin, after Johnny Lee, a friend of Blake. Each ran track and graduated from the former Rosedale High School, with Blake, now 65, graduating in 1972 and Lee in 1971.

His friend later died while in his 40s, but the bins where given to Blake from Johnny’s younger sister, Laura.

The other cabin is named

the J. Teague Cabin, after John Teague, on whose property Blake was able to harvest 20 red cedar trees for lumber to line the interior of the bin cabins. Blake took the logs to a mill, then he built a wood fired kiln on his property to dry the cedar boards. He also got some cedar trees, about to fall over, at nearby Bloomingdale Cemetery for use in the cabins.

Blake used a semi trailer used to haul logs to remove the bins from the farm, then used a flat-bed truck to haul the bins to the campground. It took several months to convert the bins last year into cabins for use this year. Blake plans to plant wild flowers around the bins and allow prairie grass to grow tall around the base of each bin cabin.

“I want to kinda of make it look like you are out on the prairie somewhere,” he said.

He also built red cedar swings in front of each cabin. That forced him to make other swings (not cedar) for other existing cabins along the pond.

The bin cabins come with a small refrigerator, microwave, air conditioning and a bench table that also converts into a bed. They rent for $85 a night and can be rented per day, per week or even monthly.

“You have to enjoy the smell of cedar,” Blake said.

Converting the bins was something Blake could easily handle. He had been a roofing contractor and general contractor, owning

Blake Roofing, then Blake Construction. He also worked for Guaranteed Roofing in Terre Haute from 1985-1989. In addition, Blake has

a tannery business, using elk, moose or deer hide, and shaves the animal hair into art, such as eagles, or mountain lions and elk. His favorite is

a hide displaying two dogs chasing a raccoon up a tree.

The wild animals remind him of his home state of Montana, before moving to Terre Haute with his family at the age of 14. Blake and his sister, Pam Virostko, purchased the 46-acre site in 2005, then added a four-acre private pond. His sister named the campground.

“This used to be a flea market and all the electric was in and that is what gave us the idea of a campground,” Blake said.

The home on the site, where he now lives, was in such bad shape “it was evaluated [assessed] at zero,” he said. “We cleaned up two dump sites as the place had

been abandoned for seven years.”

Blake and his wife bought out his sister’s share last year and added the grain bin cabins. Blake has future visions for the property, storing up pine timbers on the property, with a goal of building a large lodge capable of holding hundreds of people in hopes of attracting camping or hunting associations or business groups for weekend or week-long events.

“I love doing this kind of stuff,” Blake said.

Soaring RV popularity drives record sales

INDUSTRY NEWS

MORE than 9 million RVs hit the road each year. The industry reports annual sales of 355,000 new travel trailers, motorhomes, and pop-up campers totaling over 15 billion dollars. RV owners fill all age groups from 35 to 75 and take an average of three vacations every year.

Motorhomes and camper-trailers remain popular, but RV travel trailers make up the bulk of new sales. Anyone traveling the roads on a weekend this summer will notice the luxury behind large and small SUVs, vans, and pickup trucks. The big draw? Neighborhoods of like-minded RVers at camping resorts who come together around bonfires to share food and drinks and swap stories like families at a reunion. Many form long-term friendships and meet year after year or several

times during the summer.Often secured behind

locked gates, the RV Parks and Resorts feature game rooms, tennis courts, play areas, swimming pools, snack bars and other attractions. Frequently located near popular destinations, they offer a place to go with more to do than the average hotel.

Neighborhoods are nice, especially when you can take it all with you, but RV travel means the freedom to boondock—park and stay almost anywhere. Away from RV parks and resorts, the RV Generator supplies all

the amenities and luxuries of home—air conditioning in the summer, heat from fall through spring fall, television, entertainment centers, and your favorite coffee fresh from the pot. National Parks make popular destinations, but many don’t offer an RV hookup. To keep noise at a minimum for all users, some limit the hours of generator use and all have noise standards. Fortunately, Motorhome Generators and Travel Trailer Generators have come a long way in reducing noise. Park service requirements specify 60dB (A) or lower sound levels

measured at 50 feet.Unlike portables, models

from manufacturers like Cummins-Onan install on the trailer, motorhome, or fifth wheel and start at the touch of a button from a control panel inside the RV. A luxury diesel-powered Class A motorhome generator can provide the same power used by the average suburban home.

According to the RVIA, an industry trade association, “There’s an RV for every taste and budget.” Travel trailers cost anywhere from $6,000 to $95,000, and motorhomes from 100 thousand to half a million dollars. Not unexpected since they are literally a home on the road.

And not always a second home. Those who travel for a living may abandon overcrowded suburbs for local RV parks or even the local big-box store parking lot. It’s not hard to imagine a home with granite countertops, a king-size bed in the master suite, washer-dryer, and a 60-inch television over the fireplace. Now the dream home comes on wheels and goes anywhere you want.

Yellowstone visitation in July down slightly

INDUSTRY NEWS

Adding the KOA brand to your park is a great way to increase your mid-week business.

You’ll also benefit from national marketing programs, a cutting-edge reservation system and the name recognition that comes with being a KOA franchised location.

We were stunned! Our mid-week business went up 50 percent our first year with KOA. It was amazing!

Beat the competition, every day of the week.

Jim Kersten – Milton, Wisconsin KOA

July visitation to Yellowstone National Park dropped by 4,500 people compared to last year, a barely noticeable 0.48% decrease.

The middle of the summer is the most popular for visitation to the park that straddles portions of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, topping out at more than 995,000 in 2016.

This July saw 936,062 recreation visits compared to 940,563 last year. So far in 2019 the park has tallied 2,294,690 visits, down 1.19% from the same period last year.

While there is always speculation about why

park numbers fluctuate, it's interesting to note that in July the total number of overnight stays in Yellowstone had dropped by almost 4% compared to last year.

That could be due to the closure of Fishing Bridge RV Park for upgrades and 66 Lake Lodge cabins that were scheduled for renovation, which has been delayed, according to Rick Hoeninghausen, director of sales and marketing for Xanterra Parks and Resorts in Yellowstone.

ARVC and NewBook enter into elite partnership

DENVER, CO. - The National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) and tourism technology platform NewBook, are pleased to announce they have entered into an Elite Partnership. ARVC and NewBook will be working together to provide education on how to operate more efficiently and drive more business, along with extended benefits to ARVC members within the outdoor hospitality industry. NewBook is the first company to join ARVC’s Integrated Partnership Program, taking their relationship to a new level and increasing NewBook’s brand visibility in the United States.

Highlights of the partnership include NewBook being named ARVC’s exclusive technology sponsor of ARVCNews, a curriculum creator for and facilitator at the National School for RV Park and Campground Management, as well as

numerous other opportunities to engage with the ARVC community throughout the year.

In addition, building on their success as an expo sponsor at last year’s Outdoor Hospitality Conference and Expo (OHCE), NewBook will return as a title sponsor at this year’s event. Members of the California-based NewBook team, including Shaye Illich, Geoff Illich and Jerome Staverosky, will also host the Welcome Reception on Monday, Nov. 4.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with NewBook on this Elite-level partnership,” says ARVC President and CEO Paul Bambei. “Our industry is changing and NewBook is getting out in front of things with innovative products and ideas, similar to the innovative strides ARVC is making with our education and other member benefits. Besides increasing NewBook’s engagement opportunities

with the ARVC community, this partnership will create great opportunities for our members to grow their businesses as well.”

Established in 2010, NewBook quickly became the preferred technology platform of thousands of RV park users globally, thanks to their drive to stay ahead of industry trends and provide the best possible tools to make their clients more money and enhance guest experiences.

NewBook’s latest product offerings include NEW.B.I.E, an artificial intelligence chatbot and a centralized guest app, which allow guests to self-manage their stay and access information in real-time, on demand.

“I am really looking forward to working with the ARVC community to assist with increasing their revenue and streamlining their operations through the application of the latest technology and

our expert knowledge,” says NewBook Founder & CEO Brad Illich. “I am confident our collaboration with ARVC will allow us to strengthen the outdoor hospitality industry and transform the way business owners see and use technology to stay competitive and provide amazing guest experiences.”

NewBook was also recently announced as an ARVC Member Benefit Provider, exclusively offering a $250 discount on all setup packages to ARVC members. To access the exclusive $250 MBP offer, ARVC members simply need to share their ARVC ID membership number when they contact the NewBook sales team. Visit www.newbook.cloud for a free demonstration, more information or to sign up for the award-winning online platform.

When a little help goes a long way

INDUSTRY NEWS

THE Jump Pad Company wholeheartedly supports anything that involves kids that are going through an illness or any organization that caters for those that have a disability.

For a few years now the company has donated a 20’x25’ Jump Pad to KOA Care camps at the annual KOA convention where it is used as an auction item to raise money for Care Camps. “We will continue to support this great cause as it strikes home to see kids with cancer making the best of what life has to offer, I hope the Jump Pad brings joy to the kids and implore others to get on board and help where they can” said Dennis Macready from

the company. One of KOA Care Camp’s major sponsors are Southeast Publications, where the Warrick Family has supported Care Camps since 1994. Owners Wally and Kim Warrick include a Care Camps auction every year within their company’s NATC meetings. At the end of each auction, the Warrick’s match the funds raised to send more kids to camp. “It is excellent to see great companies like the Jump Pad join in on this worthy cause.” Opines Wally Warrick.

Please visit https://koacarecamps.org to get involved.

More recently the Jump Pad company helped a recreation center who needed a product

that would help athletes with a disability to “wind down” after an event and also help with pressure relief.

The Verne Cox Center is a recreation center funded by the City of Pasadena in Texas, for individuals with physical and or intellectual disabilities. These athletes were using the new Jump Pad between

games for pressure relief at their annual Wheelchair Wind-Up Softball Tournament. Being outdoors and sweating in the 90+ degree heat while sitting a wheelchair makes athletes more prone to pressure sores which is where the Jump Pad helped. Pressure reliefs are very important and many athletes take advantage any chance they get!

“I am reaching out to other vendors to help where they can, even a little help will make the world of difference to those in need, all it takes is a little thought as to what each of us can do” Macready said
