New England PatriotsIn the 2000s the Patriots became one of the most successful teams in NFL history. They are currently tied for second with 6 appearances in a Super Bowl, and have the most appearances in the last 25 years. Between 2001–2010, the Patriots set a record for most wins in a decade (126, different from conventionally bounded decades, 2000–2009, 1990–1999, etc; this record references any 10 year stretch; 2nd is the 1984–1993 San Francisco 49ers, with 120 wins). Between 2001 and 2005, the Patriots became the second team in NFL history (after the Dallas Cowboys) to win three Super Bowls in four years (Super Bowl XXXVI, XXXVIII, and XXXIX), and the eighth (and as of the present time, the last team to date) to win consecutive Super Bowls. The Patriots, however, were defeated by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII, after winning the first 18 games of their 2007 season. Under quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots have also compiled the longest winning streak consisting of regular season and playoff games in NFL history, a 21-game streak from October 2003–October 2004.

Boston SportsTitle Town

Boston, Massachusetts, is home to several major league sports teams, including the Boston Red Sox (base-ball), Boston Celtics (basketball), and Boston Bruins (hockey). The New England Patriots (football) and New England Revolution (soccer) play at Gillette Stadium in nearby Foxborough. The city is home to two renowned sporting events: the Boston Mara-thon and the Head of the Charles Regatta. Several Boston-area col-leges and universities are active in college athletics. In the 2000s Boston’s professional teams had arguably the most suc-cessful decade in sports history, winning 7 championships (3 by

the Patriots, 2 by the Red Sox, and 1 each by the Celtics and Bruins). When the Bruins reached the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals, the city of Bos-ton became the first city in the 21st Century to have all four of its ma-jor professional league teams win a league championship, and it is the only city ever to have champion-ships in all four major professional leagues within a ten-year span (from the Patriots’ victory in February 2005 to the Bruins’ in June 2011). In just six years, between February 2005 and June 2011, Boston’s teams completed what Sports Illustrated dubbed as the “Grand Slam of North American sports”.
