the Western Australian-based Hanseatic Marine has cemented its reputation for breaking new ground with the launch of Smeralda, hailed as

the world’s largest all-aluminium superyacht. The launch follows sister yachts, Silver and Silver Zwei, renamed Rabdan and Dragonfly respectively.

The brainchild of German eco-industrialist Guido Krass and designed by the legendary Espen Øino, Smeralda is setting new benchmarks in fuel-efficient superyacht concept design and development.

Well before the global financial crisis made consideration of fuel efficiency a necessity rather than a quaint but somewhat unnecessary idea within the superyachting industry, Krass was tirelessly pursuing innovative methods of creating power, range capability and performance, without compromising efficiency. With a collaborative vision between Krass and Øino and extensive tank testing across Europe in top-shelf research laboratories, the result is arguably one of the biggest revolutions in the superyacht design industry. Together, they have established the award-winning Hanseatic Marine as a global leader in innovative superyacht design and manufacture.

In practical terms, this means that the world’s largest all-aluminium superyacht and the largest superyacht ever built in Australia is expected to clock up less fuel consumption per hour during a Pacific crossing than a runabout during a 25-minute Sunday offshore spin. With more powerful engines than the two previous Hanseatic releases, Smeralda delivers a cruising speed of 25 knots and a top speed of over 27 knots with a range of 4,500 nautical miles at 18 knots.

The unique, piercing hull shape is at the core of its success. The use of light but ultra strong marine-grade aluminium, a narrow 10-metre beam and 550 tonnes displacement are critical elements that set Smeralda and the previous vessels in Hanseatic Marine’s Silver Series apart.

At every angle, Smeralda offers a glimpse into the commitment and painstaking attention to detail which underpins Hanseatic’s yacht-building philosophy. From the outside, the vessel is long, sleek and flawless. The finish is exquisitely smooth from top to bottom, inside to out. The four-layer mast is an aluminium construction, consisting of painfully thin 1.6 millimetre plates, similar to those used in aviation engineering. The complex, high-tech engineering integration hints at the level of ingenuity present in every component of this build.

The workmanship pays homage to the expertise of Western Australia’s maritime labour force. Austal, the world’s leading aluminium fast ferry producer is Hanseatic’s neighbour at the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) at Cockburn Sound, 30 kilometres south of Perth.

Hanseatic’s Chris Blackwell acknowledges that the highly skilled workforce available within the AMC was a key factor in the location of the shipyard.

“This precinct is definitely a hub of excellence in aluminium ship building, developed through the presence of companies such as Austal, Oceanfast, Image Marine, etc.

“This was a perfect fit for Hanseatic to achieve its vision of producing high speed, lightweight, stylish superyachts.”

As the third in the Silver Series, Smeralda is destined to be compared to her predecessors. One feature not present on board the earlier models is the stunning ‘winter garden’. Situated aft of the principal deck lounge, the space offers dining options with slide-away deck to ceiling glass panels. The ‘Beach Club’ has benefited from the additional four-metre LOA, with additional storage and a second step, which provides easier access for guests to board watercraft.

A glass-walled sauna, rain showers, massage table, beauty salon and gym are located aft of the engine room. The glass fronted Jacuzzi is twice the size of that present on previous Hanseatic yachts of this series and has been repositioned to the sun deck.

These improvements result in a smoother layout, highlighting the vessel’s many features with maximum impact. This is evidenced by the side opening ‘gull-wing’ doors, which dramatically reveal the two 7.4 metre custom tenders. The overall design is meticulously considered, creating a flow throughout the vessel.

The foredeck is dominated by the ‘touch and go’ helipad. We are informed that the state-of-the-art soundproofing ensures that a chopper can land and take off with minimal disturbance to the guests on board.

The 10-metre beam, dictated by the desire to reduce drag and optimise performance would suggest a constricted interior but every square centimetre of space is thoughtfully utilised, to maximum benefit.

by Neram complement the middle-eastern inspired design. The aesthetic is one of tranquility, with a purple and blue colour palette, sculpted carpets, exquisite leatherwork and artisan stonework throughout. Enormous windows dominate the large main-deck saloon, ensuring the space is bathed with natural light. The commitment to efficiency is evident throughout the interior, with lightweight aluminium honeycomb dominating the internal structure.

Blackwell describes Hanseatic’s approach to interior design and manufacture as akin to that of luxury aircraft; lightweight yet durable and of the highest quality and finish standard. Every detail is carefully considered, from the resilient mounting of the interior components, ballistic glass porthole chambers, which were designed in-house to avoid unsightly steel deadlights, whisper-quiet, fully integrated air-conditioning, through to detailed care instructions for the crew. Blackwell goes on to explain, “Hanseatic’s ability to deliver such a high-quality superyacht product is ultimately a testament to Mr Krass who believes and invests in

Hanseatic’s highly skilled team, the hundreds of years combined superyacht design and craftsmanship experience held between us, as well as Hanseatic’s world class 3D engineering process.”

Within the spacious main saloon, easy adjustments transform the dining space from a formal environment into a cosy, casual catch-up lounge. The main deck houses three six-star VIP cabins, all boasting stunning, individually crafted timber panelling. The lower deck features two three-berth guest cabins as well as four twin cabins. Space is optimised, offering 22 passenger berths to choose from. Impressively, two of the twin cabins can be sectioned off to serve as additional personnel accommodation.

The entire top deck is the owner’s apartment and features a spacious cabin with panoramic views, a private deck with a large eight-seater table, lounge, office and his and her bathrooms. The apartment is easily hidden from the rest of the vessel for ultimate privacy, by way of secret fold-out wall sections.

After enjoying flawless sea trials and overwhelmingly positive reviews upon her launch in March 2012, the team behind Smeralda faced their biggest challenge in July this year during her delivery voyage to Europe.

“That inaugural crossing between Fremantle and the Mediterranean threw some substantial weather at Smeralda,” recounts Blackwell. “Smeralda faced five-metre seas and force eight gales.”

The crossing demonstrated the strength, durability and true seaworthiness of these innovative, lightweight vessels. Smeralda was delivered in Europe on time, in immaculate condition.

“That is the ultimate validation for our team of designers and craftsmen and women. These projects are a labour of love for the whole team. To see Smeralda perform in the way she did and arrive in great condition was extremely gratifying for both the owner and the build team.” says Blackwell.

To cap off the successful delivery of Smeralda in July, Hanseatic Marine was awarded the 2012 Australian Marine Export and Superyacht Industry Business of the year in Manufacturing.

Further success is on the horizon with Hanseatic Marine already commencing work on construction of Hull 04 (Suvretta). Anticipation will be high as we await the next chapter in Hanseatic Marine’s evolution.
