BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD – Psalm 46:10 It seems impossible, but the holidays are upon us! Are you looking forward to them or are you dreading them? Welcome to November! Last month, you listened to a series of sermons based on Wesley’s Simple Rules of Money: Earn, Save, Give. Your Finance team will be working on the Budget for 2020 this month deciding how best to use the funds you, as church members, have pledged. My husband, Mike, and I recently returned from a trip overseas. One of the stops we made was in Falmouth, UK. It is the gateway to the “picturesque county of Cornwall in the most southwestern corner of England,” and backdrop to countless films and TV series (yes to Poldark fans). As we traveled by motor coach through the Cornish countryside on our way to Marazion, our tour guide spoke of the history of the area and began speaking of John Wesley who first visited Cornwall in 1743. For a community of miners facing dangers at work every day, farmers, and fisherman threatened by creeping industrialism, Wesley’s simple doctrine of justification through faith and instant salvation offered comfort, security, and hope. John Wesley and his brother Charles, also set up health and literacy facilities to help the impoverished to improve their lot, making Methodism the religion of the people in contrast to Anglicanism, thought to be the preserve of the rich. John Wesley visited Cornwall 32 times before his death in 1791. By 1750, Methodist Societies were in 30 of the tin mining communities of West Cornwall. His practice of preaching outdoors, in barns and cottages suited Cornwall’s geography with a rural population scattered in villages isolated from the parish church. Today, John Wesley’s message continues to flourish in Cornwall with 80% of the surviving chapels Methodist. Mike and I personally saw Methodist Chapels as we traveled through the small villages. It made our hearts glad that we could witness the message that John Wesley preached all those years ago still in action. The message is as relevant today as it was then. And here at Bend Church, our actions and intent is to “Do all the good you can”.

COMPASSIONATE CARE NEWS Colder weather has found us sooner than expected this year. Many of us have pulled out our warmer winter clothes, perhaps added an extra blanket on the bed and turned on the heat. This results in a rise in our costs to keep warm. This response to keeping warm is also true for our homeless friends as well as those on low or fixed incomes. As we continue to reach out to those seeking financial help through Compassionate Care, we are learning of folks living in their cars who need to run the heater during the night . . . so they need extra gas. Many of those living outdoors rely on propane heaters so need assistance in buying the small sized tanks. Electric bills also go up with increased demand for heat in the homes of those with low or fixed incomes. Their dollars are already being stretched to the limit. We ask that you keep these needs in mind as you make your contributions to Compassionate Care. Perhaps you could increase your donation by a few dollars each month. If you have not contributed to this fund but are considering it, now would be the perfect time to step in to help! Those we are able to help have such radiant, grateful smiles that could light up the room and they are so very thankful for all our church members are doing to help them meet their basic needs. Please help our friends stay warm as the temperatures keep going down as winter approaches. Many thanks! Compassionate Care Committee: Thom Larson and Sally Williams

The final count is in, thanks to your generosity we received 173 pairs of

women’s underwear, 121 pairs of men’s underwear, 10 pairs of children’s underwear

and 15 pairs of socks.

As we continue on into our holiday season I wanted to invite all to our six week Grief Group. Many of us know that the holidays can be a particularly compounded time full of joy and expectation as well as sadness and pain. In “The Cure for Sorrow,” Jan Richardson writes, “One of grief’s most insidious aspects lies in how isolating it can become...but she writes, “grief holds the power to help us recognize our shared fragility and also to call forth our mutual resilience as we

meet one another in sometimes unspeakable pain.” Gathering in small groups is one way that we practice our faith in community. All are invited to come and participate in spiritual practice, sharing, and mutual support. The group will meet on Wednesday evenings from, 7:00-8:30pm Nov. 13th and 20th Dec 4th, 11th, 18th Jan 8.

Peace,

Pastor Nicole
