Here’s the Sitch...

Construction of the new Baptismal font is still on schedule.

Paintwork to the exterior walls of the church began on July 15th.

Replacement of the basketball hoops and padding in the Parish Center also began on July 15th. The gym floor will be refinished beginning July 28th. Costs are being covered through the Oak-land Diocese by a grant specifically intended for parish gym upgrades.

Blessings, Fr. Ken

As always, today's readings challenge us in so many ways, particularly regarding the balance between action and reflection. The readings address the vital importance that hospitality plays in all aspects of our lives and the role of women in our ministries and our Church. Jesus speaks of one thing as necessary for us who follow him, being open to receive the message and being receptive to the mystery of Christ as he comes to us through one another.

Today’s Gospel has been taken by many as a reproach by Jesus to poor Martha when she complained about her sister Mary for not being more helpful. No doubt Jesus ap-preciated Martha's efforts and hospitality, not the least because He Himself benefited; but above all, because Jesus was always stressing the importance of hospitality and reaching out and taking care of the poor and the dispossessed among us.

Have we completely lost the virtue of hospitality as we debate these days over our country’s hostility towards the poor or the immigrant among us? What a wonderful example we receive today from Abraham as he and Sarah welcome and feed the three strangers. Their lives are transformed, for the visitors tell them: ''…this time next year… Sarah will then have a son.''

Is that not what happens to us as we receive the Food from the Altar in the Eucharist? We become other Christs when we welcome the stranger, the poor man or woman or child, when we receive kindly the immigrant. We break down barriers of suspicion, fear and anger and we are trans-formed into brothers and sisters. Our lives, our society become more tolerable, less painful, and quite simply – more fun!

As Jesus tells us in another place: ''…whatever you do to the least of my brothers or sisters, you do to me.'' When Abraham and Sarah welcomed the strangers, their lives changed forever. When Mar-tha listened to Jesus, she, too, was healed of her anxiety and stress. My dear sisters and brothers, let us listen to Jesus and do as He requests.

From the Desk of Fr. Lee...

Opening the Word, Year C: 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

This Gospel reading challenges us to remember that being busy for the Lord is not the same as be-ing with him, to sit at his feet and hear him in our hearts. Truly that is the “better part.”
