CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The sky is the limit

Designed for people looking to build their skills and knowledge to become a successful commercial pilot, the course will provide you with the essential skills you need for a range of jobs within the sector, including:

§ charter pilot

§ flight instructor

§ aerial application pilot

§ airline pilot

§ simulator instructor.

Pathways to take your career to new heights

After successful completion of the Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) course, you can progress your aviation career by completing:

AVI50519 Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating)

This rating is often required for employment with a charter company, and is a prerequisite for a job as an airline pilot. It allows you to pilot an aircraft by sole reference to your flight instruments, which means you can fly at night, and in cloud. This qualification usually takes a further 4 to 6 months to complete.

The 29 units will equip you with the skills and knowledge to perform a range of tasks, including:

§ applying technical and non-technical aviation skills and knowledge

§ flight crew duties

§ passenger transport operations

§ charter and cargo operations

§ aircraft operation

§ visual and instrument flight

§ take-off and landing procedures

To view the qualification and unit information as it is represented in the training package, visit training.gov.au and search using the AVI50219 qualification code.

Qualification outcomes

By successfully completing this course, you will have earned a Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane).

You will gain the skills, experience and confidence to fill the role of flight crew personnel performing normal and emergency commercial pilot duties in support of commercial flight operations. Flight crew duties include applying technical and non-technical aviation skills and knowledge to a wide range of air transport operations, including passenger, charter and cargo operations.

Working at this level you will apply your skills and knowledge while demonstrating autonomy, judgement, and defined responsibility in known or changing contexts, and within broad but established parameters.

This qualification forms some of the requirements for certification as a commercial pilot by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as directed by Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR) Part 61 Flight Crew Licensing.

Industry requirements

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), under Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR), regulates the Part 61 Flight Crew Licensing standards, which outlines requirements for certification as a commercial pilot.

These requirements are integrated in the Diploma of Aviation qualification, with your final diploma competency determination occurring simultaneously with the granting of your Commercial Pilot Licence.

In accordance with the CASA CASR Part 61 Flight Crew Licensing requirements, your practical training will take place in single engine aeroplanes. Then, once you have achieved the licence, the privileges include the authorisation to act as pilot in command of certain operations, and as co-pilot of any operation.

To maintain your licence, you will then need to undertake a flight review with an approved officer, every 24 months.

HOW TO APPLY

To ensure you are successful in your aviation training, and that you enjoy your time with TAFE NSW and SFC, we have rigorous student entry requirements, as well as a three-part screening process.

If you have previous flying experience or have undertaken previous studies, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer.

Recognition

§ Credit Transfer (CT) If you have previously completed a unit in this course, at TAFE NSW or with another Registered Training Organisation (RTO), you can apply for CT.

§ Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) To have your previous study, work and or life experiences recognised, you can apply for RPL.

For further information about Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning, visit tafensw.edu.au/recognition or discuss it with your course advisor and interview panel.

Entry requirements

To succeed in this course, you will need to possess strong language, literacy and numeracy skills.

Aircraft performance calculations demand advanced numeracy skills, and you will also need to have a good level of English language skills to interpret the exam questions asked by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). Additionally, you will need to have good language skills to communicate effectively in person, as well as when using an aeronautical radio, particularly in high pressure situations.

As part of your screening process entry requirements, you will need to provide evidence of the following:

Entry requirement Gather evidenceUnique Student Identifier (USI) usi.gov.au

Aviation Reference Number (ARN) bit.ly/CASAARN

Class 1 Medical (an ARN is required before applying for the medical) bit.ly/CASADAME

Aviation Security Identity Card (ASIC) (an ARN and confirmed operational need from our Chief Flying Instructor are required prior to application)

bit.ly/CASAASIC

Five hours of prior flight experience A flight experience package is available for applicants with no flying experience

A language, literacy and numeracy LLN testYou will undertake this test during screening. If the results show you need to improve your literacy and numeracy skills, we will recommend further training with TAFE NSW.

Applicant screening

There are three stages to the screening process:

1. Pre-screening meet and greet

The initial stage of the application process is an informal 30 minute meet and greet with a course advisor.

Discussion topics may include:

§ your knowledge and any experience of aviation

§ any previous experience and study which will lead to Recognition of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer

§ your career ambitions on completion of the course

§ progress you have made towards gathering entry requirements: ARN, Class 1 Medical and ASIC

§ information about the course structure and required commitment

§ any need to undertake the five session Flight Experience Package before enrolment

§ information about the literacy and numeracy assessment used to determine suitability for the course

§ information about course fees, out of pocket expenses, and costs of repeating course elements (you will be directed to TAFE NSW for information about VET Student Loans and given a contact with TAFE NSW for further information).

§ tour of SFC facilities and aircraft

Your course advisor will monitor your progress in completing the entry requirements as you move through the screening process.

2. Application and prerequisite finalisation

Once you have attended the meet and greet, you will be provided with a detailed breakdown of the steps required to complete the Entry Requirements for the course. This will initially involve passing a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment at TAFE NSW followed by a Flight Experience Package at SFC. These assessments will form part of the conversation during the final screening interview. During this stage you will also be advised on the process of attaining your Class 1 medical, USI, Aviation Reference Number and ASIC. Please note that all prerequisites must be completed prior to enrolment.

3. Screening interview

The screening interview takes place over one hour, and is conducted with a panel comprised of senior staff from TAFE NSW and the Sydney Flight College.

Topics of discussion may include:

§ your previous experience or performance during the Flight Experience Package

§ results from screening assessments and recommendations for further study if required before acceptance into the course

§ entry requirement evidence already provided and to be provided

§ questions to determine your level of interest and engagement with a career in aviation.

At the end of the screening interview, the panel will discuss your suitability for the course. You may receive a verbal offer if you have been successful.

Note: To receive an offer of enrolment, you must successfully complete all entry requirements, including attendance at screening events.
