It is now well recognised that children
develop extraordinarily quickly. The
ages between 6 and 10 are particularly
important because children start on a
path towards independence, reasoning
and problem solving.
They become physically stronger and are ready to
learn how to tackle challenges in life. Most of all,
they want to have fun.
For parents, bringing up children is very
demanding, but enormously rewarding. It is
a time to look beyond the home and school
for ways to truly enrich
your childs life.

Being a parent isnt always easy it can
be a real balancing act. With pressureson our time, it is good to fnd activities
the whole family can get involved with.
Children grow fast and revel in new activities. At a
relatively young age, they quickly become ready to
look for new challenges beyond the family and school.
It is great to nd something local that involves boys
and girls and their siblings and parents.
Many parents have had rst-hand experience with
Scouts. Theyll nd that some activities have changed
and are more modern. But the essence of Scouting,
the fun, the outdoor adventure, and the strong sense
of community, remains.
Learning Life Skills
In Scouts, children learn:
Independent thinking
Social interaction
Leadership skills
Problem-solving
Responsibility
Girls and boys
are equally involved
As a Dad, I know I spend too much time at work.

The best thing for a childs development
is diversity in what they do and what they
experience. Social interaction with peers
outside the formal school environment
is invaluable in helping a childs
personal development.
Non-competitive activities, where children can
develop at their own pace, is terric for building
their self-esteem and self-condence.
The health of children is clearly a concern for mostparents. Alarmingly, more Australian kids are overweight
than ever before. Experts say the reasons include a mix
of eating more (especially processed food) and exercising
less.2 Watching more than two hours of television a day
can, according to scientists, mean that children are more
likely to grow into obese adults.3 Whilst TV, Computer
and Video Games have popular appeal for kids, they
need other activities to provide a good balance.

To be prepared for life,
children need to learn aboutcaring, community and leadership.
A great milestone for children is when they learn
to take responsibility for themselves and become
concerned for others. Many positive behaviours can
be learnt from participation in constructive activities
with other children of all ages and with adults.
Scouting provides an environment where leadership
is fostered, and children are nurtured. An important
part of the experience is learning tolerance and
consideration for others ... and then giving back
to the community. Overall, Scouts provides a great
foundation for training little Leaders, who will go
on to be the Leaders of the future - in all walks of life.
SAFETYAll parents are concerned about the well being of their
children, which is why safety is given such a high priority
in Scouts.
Background Police checks are
conducted on all prospective Leaders
All adult Leaders receive comprehensive
training in dealing with children
The two Leader policy ensures two adult
Leaders are present during all activities

Australia is a wonderful country with
an incredibly diverse environment.
Many parents, especially city dwellers, get few
opportunities to introduce their children to the
Australian bush and the associated outdoor activities.
For Scouts, the outdoors the Australian bush
is our playground. There is no better way for
children to make the most of the great Australian
environment be it camping, kayaking, climbing
or simply enjoying. Scouts have been committed
to conservation for 100 years. One of the 10 Scout
laws is A Scout cares for the environment.
