One of the least observed holidays in the Jewish calendar year is the holiday of Shavuot. Pesach and Sukkot, as two of the three pilgrimage festivals, have many rituals attached to them which make both of them home holidays filled with meaningful customs. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are synagogue-based and known as the High Holy Days and bring out the Jewish community in masses to worship services like no other days during the calendar year. While Hanukkah and Purim are minor festivals they are filled with fun, family, and community celebrations.

Shavuot, however, seems to pale in comparison to all of these holidays. There is not much home ritual and even at the synagogue there are not many ceremonies. Spiritually speaking, Shavuot is the festival of revelation. Historical mention of the festival has to do with the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai which, according to tradition, took place on the 6th day of Sivan. This is a theological concept and difficult for us to get our arms around. The number of people in the Jewish community who celebrate Shavuot in comparison to the other holidays is rather minimal.

While we may differ in our understanding of what happened at Mount Sinai, it is imperative that we seriously consider the ramifications of that event which is recounted for us in the Torah.

Emet VeEmunah: Statement of Principles of Conservative Judaism opens with the words, “We believe in G-d. Indeed, Judaism cannot be detached from belief in G-d. Conservative Judaism affirms its belief in revelation, the uncovering of an external source of truth emanating from G-d.” It goes on to explain that “the single greatest event in the history of G-d’s revelation took place at Sinai, but was not limited to it… Some of us conceive of revelation as the personal encounter between G-d and human beings. Among them there are those who believe that this personal encounter has propositional content – that G-d communicated with us in actual words. For them, revelation’s content is immediately normative, as defined by rabbinic interpretation. The commandments of the Torah themselves issue directly from G-d. Others, however, believe that revelation consists of an ineffable human encounter with G-d. The experience of revelation inspires the verbal formulation by human beings of norms and ideas, thus continuing the historical influence of this revelational encounter. Others among us conceive of revelation as the continuing discovery, through nature and history, of truths about G-d and the world. These truths, although always culturally conditioned, are nevertheless seen as G-d’s ultimate purpose for creation. Proponents of this view tend to see revelation as an ongoing process rather than as a specific event.”

As Rabbi Alan Lucas in the book The Observant Life: The Wisdom of Life for Conservative Judaism for Contemporary Jews writes, “These inspirational words show the way for contemporary Jews attempting to relate to Shavuot. that reminds us that faith in the truth of revelation is at the heart of all legitimate varieties of Judaism and Jewish identity.”

These are terms and concepts that are difficult for us to comprehend in our scientific age. Yet, they form the foundation of the Jewish way of life and the Jewish value system. There are many views of revelation even in rabbinic and medieval Jewish literature. No one view is totally representative of all of Jewish thought. The views range from a quote in the Jerusalem Talmud Hagigah 1:7 which states: “Even what an experienced student in the future is going to teach before his master already has been stated to Moses at Sinai,” all the way to a statement attributed to Naftali Tzvi

Horowitz of Ropshitz, quoting his teacher, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Rymanov [d. 1850], “It was possible that we heard from the mouth of the Holy One, blessed by He, only the letter aleph anokhi”, that is, the first letter of the word of the first commandment.

In between these two poles we find many different opinions as to what actually occurred at Mount Sinai and what is the content of revelation. On the basis of these opinions, one can readily see Jewish theology is varied in its opinion and the denominations of Judaism have based their understanding of Jewish law, customs, and ceremonies on this issue.

Shavuot encourages us to think about the event at Mount Sinai and to examine what effect it has in our lives. While it

is difficult for many of us to adequately approach these concepts, it is important that we try.

Thus, I hope you will join us over the holiday of Shavuot at the synagogue where we will participate in Rabbi Phillip Lipis Memorial Lecture and our Tikkun Layl Shavuot. I hope that you will be with us at services on the two days of Shavuot as we listen once more to the Ten Commandments and re-enact that event in our history. I hope that you will think about the effect that Sinai has on your life and what impact it has upon your belief system and your conduct. If we can follow through with all of these items, the holiday of Shavuot will be meaningful for us all.

It’s that (almost) miraculous time in any President’s administration when their term is almost up, the new officers are preparing for their responsibilities, and the lame duck President is writing their last message for the congregation’s bulletin.

Over the past two years, every now and then, a congregant or some other acquaintance may pull me aside and ask me, “why did I agree to do it?” Of course, they mean why I agreed to become President of the Synagogue.

Sometimes I throw off a humorous response, but right here, I’ll give you my reasons, because every now and then, I think we all have those moments of reflection where we stop and think about what are the things we stand for and what do we really think and believe is important.

First, I believe in giving back when I’ve benefitted so substantially. At Beth El, Gail and I and our family found education, community, celebration and solace. Yes, serving as President takes a lot of personal time…but…the time commitment has been much less when compared to the wonderful facets to our lives that we’ve received.

Second, I believe that providing a positive example, by being engaged (enthusiastically engaged!), and by dedicating your personal resources, resonates with our children and sets a standard for them in which to aspire and achieve. This is true not just with Beth El or some other synagogue, but surely with the

countless organizations that make our society and our community strong and vibrant.

Third, I believe in the future of the Jewish people. And one thing that I know is that the only way for there to be a future is to continue to build upon the foundations of those traditions that were initially established so long ago. Our strength as a people relies upon the institutions that enable us to accomplish these tasks, institutions of which synagogues are the essential institutions.

Fourth, I believe that we can accomplish great things if we work together and that to do so, we must always bear in mind that, as Jews, we are a small people in a big world. There’s a great passage in our Siddur, right at the beginning of the Torah Service, entitled ‘Private meditation’, that is presented to us right after we’ve opened the ark, which speaks to so much of this. I’ve included it here:

Avinu malkeinu, bless my family with peace. Teach us to appreciate the treasure of our lives. Help us always to find contentment in one another. Save us from dissension and jealousy; shield us from pettiness and rivalry. May selfish pride not divide us; may pride in one another unite us. Help us to renew our love for one another continually. In the light of Your Torah grant us, the people Israel and all Your creatures everywhere, health and fulfillment, harmony, peace, and joy. Amen.

Friends, with my last comments, I thought I would note on how after reading so many pages of text and commentary, that it’s abundantly obvious that we’re metaphoric writers. It can’t be helped! I think it is possibly genetic. And sometimes, like so many of our brilliant artists, I can’t resist the metaphors of the sea (despite my inclination to seasickness!). And with this final article, I’ve thought of the truth that no matter the size of your ship, whether modest or magnificent, only moments after you’ve passed any point, the sea swallows all signs of your craft, leaving only the memory of your passing. We are all so transient and temporary and in our final measurement, unless somehow selected by the holy for some special purpose, what serves us more than doing what we can to help others, to make the future a better place, to insure the continuity of all that we consider good, and to work to expunge those elements that hold us back from approaching the angels?

Friends, we’re all pilgrims on a journey…guided by the stars, an ancient scroll, deeds of loving kindness, and the genius of countless forebears. I’ve been blessed that part of my path has taken me to this place and this moment and I thank you for the support you’ve shown for the past two years.

Post Kiddush Discussion – Rabbi Kurtz's Book of Sermons

Join Rabbi Kurtz after Shabbat Kiddush, on June 1, 2013, for a special discussion of his new book, Encountering Torah: Reflections on the Weekly Portion. He will share his methodology for creating sermons and examine, in particular, those for Parashat Shelach.


Scheduling is now underway for summer Shabbat morning services at Beth El. Continuing our long-standing tradition, members of the Congregation will lead these services again this summer, on the Shabbatot from June 22 through August 17. This is your opportunity to recite a haftarah, present a D'var Torah, daven P'sukei D'Zimrah, Shaharit or Musaf or lead services from the rabbi's lectern. Our professional staff is ready to assist anyone in brushing up on old skills or in acquiring new ones. Hazzan Larry Goller can assist those volunteering to daven and he or Ritual Director Mark Stadler can aid those wishing to recite a haftarah. If you want to present a D'var Torah, Rabbi Vernon Kurtz or Rabbi Michael Schwab can help you develop a topic and can guide you to sources and commentaries in English or Hebrew. Summer Shabbat Services!

Warmer weather is here, and in only four months, we will begin the High Holy Days. If you would be interested in learning the special nusach (melody by which the prayers are chanted) for the High Holy Days, now is the time to make an appointment with the Hazzan to get started. Perhaps you currently chant Torah on Shabbat and would like to learn to do so on the High Holidays? Again, please contact the Hazzan. If you already are one of our daveners, please consider brushing up with the Hazzan and contact him now to get on top of things early on. It is important to note that the several weeks immediately before Rosh Hashanah (September 4) is a very busy time for the Hazzan, so please act soon. Mishloach Manot – A Sweet Reprise

We must say thank you to everyone in our Beth El Community who so graciously supported our Mislach Manot project and ordered those wonderful holiday packages. Through your support, Sisterhood continues to provide annual financial gifts to NSS Beth El Education Programs from preschool through our high school program and our College Connection.

Yasher Koach to Rachel Ferber who coordinated all the details of this program and guided her incredible committee who shopped, filled Purim Bags, cut ribbon, distributed packages, packed mailing boxes, and stood by the distribution tables. Shabbat, May 412:30pmThe Sisterhood Torah Fund Book Club will meet on Shabbat, May 4th after Kiddush (at approximately 12:30pm) to discuss What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank by Nathan Englander, facilitated by Rachel Kamin.

In this selection, Englander writes about his own faith – and what it means to be Jewish – in stories that explore religious tension, Israeli-American relations and the Holocaust. There are eight powerful stories – each dazzling in their display of language and imagination – each shows a celebrated short-story writer and novelist grappling with the great questions of modern life. These stories affirm Nathan Englander’s place at the very forefront of contemporary American fiction.

A New York Times Notable Book and an NPR Best Book of 2012, this book promises to provide the source for an engaging and lively discussion – please join us!

Women’s League and Sisterhood have always placed a high priority on learning; education is and always will be a fundamental necessity. You have made a difference in the lives of so many students. Yom Hashoah Yellow Candle ProjectFor the past number of years our Men’s Club has participated in the FJMC “Yom Hashoah Yellow Candle” project. A project that our entire Congregation is aware of and in which the vast majority participate. This year Yom Hashoah took place on Sunday, April 7th, and every member of Beth El received a Yellow Candle in the mail, and took the time to recite the short prayer and light the candle.

Getting that little box containing the yellow candle to each and every congregant begins months in advance. The person responsible for chairing this project, Joe Adler, reviews the past year response, membership count and places our order with FJMC for this years needs. Further, a letter from Rabbi Kurtz is mailed to all of our congregants preceding the mailing of the yellow candle.

Assembling the little package to prepare for mailing has become an evening bringing together Men’s Club members, USYers and additional volunteers. The Paset Lounge becomes an assembly line. To begin, the boxes are die cut and arrive flat. They must be creased and folded to shape. Then the yellow candles together with an envelope are inserted into each box. Boxes are then closed and each one receives an address label which has been printed by our office staff. The finished “product” is then sorted by zip code, bagged and the following day brought to the post office.

All of this work of preparing the mailing of the Yom Hashoah Candles took place the evening of Tuesday, March 12th, where about twenty five or more volunteers spent two hours ( this year went faster then previous years) completing the job. Most enjoyed soft drinks and pizza provided by the Men’s Club. Anyone is welcome to join in next year when it will all begin again.

Men’s Club Softball Team is forming again this year. We will participate in the Highland Park District Sunday league. Game times will vary from week to week. It is not too late to participate in the team! We are always looking for more players to come out and partake. Add Encountering Torah to your BookshelfA very special book, Encountering Torah: Reflections on the Weekly Portion, has just been published by Rabbi Vernon Kurtz in honor of the 25th Anniversary of his rabbinate here at Beth El. He has chosen two sermons on almost every Torah portion and assembled them in the book. It represents his understanding not only of the lessons of Torah, but the lessons of life. It is a beautiful example of Jewish thought and contemporary book publishing.

We are now excited to share Encountering Torah with the synagogue and community. Congregants who attended our Anniversary Gala on April 28th received the book at its debut at the end of the evening. As a gift to our special congregation on its 65th anniversary, every family in the congregation will receive a complimentary copy. Simply stop into the office to pick up your copy. There will also be books for sale at $25 per copy in our gift shop or via phone order in the office if you wish to purchase extra ones for your family and friends. Shipping is also available. We hope it will be an important addition to your Jewish bookshelf.

We are extremely grateful to those families who stepped forward asunderwriters for the book, participating in the mitzvah of kavod (honoring) for our esteemed Rabbi Vernon Kurtz and celebrating the 65th Anniversary of NSSBE. All donations for the book will go to fund current and new educational programming and scholarships which will allow for continued synagogue growth. The Chesed Dues Program (Formerly known as Fair Share Dues) at NSSBE is designed to underwrite reduced dues – membership support for those families who are not able to afford full dues but who wish to be part of our community. The goal is to allow each member of NSSBE the opportunity to make a difference in the life of the Congregation by helping to ensure its financial future.

For 65 years, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El has provided for the spiritual, educational, and life cycle needs of each generation. Our dues structure is designed to encourage membership, and has always been a vital part of our financial structure. But dues paid to NSSBE cover less than 50% of our annual operating budget. Approximately 20% of our membership is on reduced dues due to financial hardship. It is up to those of us who can afford it to help support those who cannot. This is the spirit of our people, the community that keeps our congregation vibrant.

The Chesed Dues Program is an ongoing program designed to help close the gap in our budget by increasing annual dues revenue. For 2013, we are altering the timing our annual Chesed Campaign by including the opportunity to donate at the time members pay their annual dues, this spring and early summer. Your dues statement will include a line for you to make your Chesed pledge. It just feels right for you to make a donation to help others afford to be a part of our community membership at the same time you are renewing your membership. When your dues statement arrives this month, if you can, simply voluntarily increase the amount of dues you pay each year to a level that reflects your ability to further support the NSSBE Community.

Your participation in this program is vital. While we have reduced our budget by over 14% in the past four years, we still need additional support. Chesed Dues allow us to maintain a dues structure that invites people to join our congregational family, helps us to close the gap between our dues revenue and the cost of running the synagogue, and aids us in sustaining and expanding vital programs and services for our congregation.

As always, gifts will be recognized on the Chesed Dues plaque in the synagogue foyer and in the Bulletin in the categories set out on the card.

Together with B'YachadB'yachad is a Hebrew word meaning "together". At NSSBE, we call people to gather together collectively, because the sum is so much greater the parts of the whole. This rich word takes on a greater unity when you consider it is a group of our most generous synagogue donors, who have joined together in B’Yachad to support NSSBE at the highest donor level.

The B’Yachad donor level was created by our leadership several years ago as an (almost)* all inclusive giving level which would help generous donors make one gift to the synagogue to cover their largest expenses and gifts – Annual dues, Kol Nidre Appeal, Chesed Dues (Formerly Fair Share) and tickets to the Annual Fundraising Event. Their generosity assists the synagogue in the most basic and necessary way – helping us meet our annual budgetary needs. These unrestricted funds help make NSSBE work smoothly, enables innovation, and provides fuel for growth. It unlocks potential and better allows us to get down to business.

The academic year is winding down. The year was filled with learning, discovery and joy. I would like to thank the clergy, the Beth El professional and support staff, the teachers, the youth professionals, the madrikhim, and all the volunteers for your dedication and commitment. You are all involved in a sacred task of educating the next generation of Jewish children and youth and you have proven time and again that you take this task very seriously. Many thanks for the continued support of the lay leadership of the synagogue, Andrew Brown, members of the Board of Education, and members of both school committees. Special thanks to Gail Scully, the Vice President of Education for being a great advocate of the schools. Thank you to Rayna Forman for helping ensure the smooth running of the schools. Thank you to the hard-working custodians for keeping the schools tidy day after day.

Great thanks go to all parents for sharing your most precious possessions. Beth El students are a source of pride to all of us. I truly enjoyed getting to know them by way of teaching them, talking to them in the hallways, davening, singing with them, or just watching them being what they are - happy and wonderful Jewish kids.

A few pieces of exciting news:

• This summer we will be offering individual tutoring for students in the Cohen Religious School. Stacy Daybook will be the teacher. Please call the school office if you would like your child to be tutored for part or all summer.

• The CRS and SHHS were awarded a Ma’alot grant; the money will be used to run Israel programs.

• Several teachers will be involved in professional development activities during the summer. Two Hebrew teachers will attend the Tal Am Seminar in New Jersey.

• Dr. Joyce Witt was elected to participate at the Poland Academy Summer Seminar (PASS). The Seminar was designed for American educators who will be working in collaboration with the group of Polish teachers developing educational materials

for the future Museum of the History of Polish Jews scheduled to be open next fall. Mazal Tov to Joyce for this important

accomplishment. I wish the teachers a meaningful learning experience.

Online school registration begins Wednesday, May 1 and continues throughout Monday, July 1. Please register early by going to Beth El website; it only takes a few minutes. Your help is greatly appreciated as we need to order books, school supplies and other materials for next year.

The first day of School for both CRS and SHHS is Sunday, September 8, 2013.

When prospective parents inquire about our pre-school they usually ask what distinguishes us from the other schools in this area. There are many reasons you would want to send your pre-schooler here. In no special order the list would include:

Family Sanctuary, Joseph and Mae Gray Cultural and Learning Center, Grossinger Brickman Activity Center and the Steinberg Pre-School.

• Our beautiful playground, set on Lake Michigan – where we can experience nature and the changing seasons as well as run and climb.• Our state of the art Early Childhood Jewish developmental curriculum including methods from Reggio Emilia, Howard

Gardner and Creative Curriculum.• Many positive interactions with the Rabbis and Hazzan and other members of the professional staff. • Scheduled visits with our Shabbat Music Specialist, Music and

Movement Specialist, Art Teacher, Librarian and Social Worker.• Terrific children and wonderful families who participate in an

active Parent Auxiliary.• Teachers who are committed to Early Childhood Jewish Education and the children and families who they care so

much about.

This list could be much longer and I invite you to visit us and see our program in action. I ended this list with our teaching staff because it is our amazing teachers that help to make this school so unique. One of these special teachers, Libby Goldenberg, is about to retire and I want you to know more about Libby and join us in honoring her for her 30 plus years of dedicated teaching at Beth El. Libby currently teaches one of our Pre –Kindergarten classes. After all her years of working you would think that she would “take it easy” and use the same curriculum she has for the past years but that is not Libby’s style. Libby is the first teacher here each day. She is always trying new methods and is a life long learner. She treats each child as if they were her own (she believes they are) and she respects each child as an individual. She has the most amazing kind way of talking to children and she truly listens to what they say to her. At the end of the day she is planning for the next day and takes great pride in each

child’s accomplishments. Libby is not only a team player, she is a leader. She took over as the Acting-Director of this school when she was called upon. While she is much more comfortable in the classroom, she did an exemplary job in a very challenging situation. She was my mentor when I came to Beth El. I continue to call upon her for her expertise and invaluable guidance. She is very generous with her knowledge and has shown the way for many of her fellow teachers.

Over the years Libby has touched so many families from our synagogue and the community. I know there are many who could tell their “Libby” stories. On June 4th at our Teachers’ Appreciation Luncheon we will be honoring Libby. While we will miss her on a daily basis, we are all very happy that she will now have more time to spend with her husband Jay, her daughters, her son-in-law and especially her grandchildren. She has promised that she will visit us on a regular basis. I am sure you join me in thanking Libby Goldenberg for her giving spirit and dedication and wish her good health and happiness. Tuesday, May 7th–At 7:00pm there will be a Mandatory Parent and Candidate Election information meeting in the Youth Lounge. This meeting is required for all USYers who will be running for BEANS Executive Board for the 2013-2014 school year.

Tuesday, May 14th– Join USY and Teen Minyan for a night of learning starting Erev Shavuot. There will be many interesting learning sessions and lots of snacks. More details on learning sessions to come!

Saturday, May 18th (after Shabbat)–USY will be having a Dive In. Meet at Beth El at 9:15pm for Havdallah. Please bring your own towel. $15 for members, $25 for non members, Free with Activity Pass.

Thoughts on Social ActionJacqueline Kott-Wolle, Chair Social Action Committee

Social Action In Action

Hopefully you will find yourself reading this article on a sunny spring day where memories of winter seem distant. I invite you, however, to recall the beautiful coming together of our Beth El community at the Social Action Committee’s fourth annual Mitzvah Day last February. Though temperatures were cold, the warmth emanating from 1175 Sheridan road was palpable. What a huge success! I am thrilled to report that over 250 Beth El members came together to learn about the amazing work of Family Promise, an organization which assists various churches and synagogues in the North Shore to open their doors to homeless families and help them find stable jobs and get back into their own homes. This is a program I hope to explore with our Social Action Committee so that Beth El can join in this important network. Everyone then broke away into groups which made hundreds of blankets for seriously ill children in area hospitals through Project Linus; stocked and organized the shelves of the Chicago Chesed Fund; sent ‘Baby Shower in a Box’ packages for expectant Military moms through our Troop Support project; gave joy to residents of the Brentwood Seniors’ Center by bringing their beloved pets to residents to visit and play; packed hundreds of pounds of food at the Northern Illinois Food Bank; others made 200 lunches for homeless youth served by Chicago’s Night Ministry and yet another group disinfected toys for the Highland Park Community Nursery and helped keep kids protected during flu season. It was a proud moment indeed and I thank you all for your openness, your generosity and time. I look forward to Mitzvah Day 2014.
