BE HEROIC. LIVE UNITED.
United WayBlackhawk Region
JONATHAN SCHLEMMER 2016 Board Chair
Dear Friends,
I’m proud to serve United Way Blackhawk Region during an exciting time of opportunity and transition. We have an incredibly dedicated and talented team of staff members, board members, volunteers, donors and Program Partners.
United Way is purposefully evolving from solely being a charitable fundraiser (“dollars in, dollars out”) to becoming a catalyst for community change. In this new model, we’re able to leverage not only our fundraising efforts, but also our organizational resources and local partnerships to mobilize the community around targeted solutions. Our success in the future will no longer be determined by a dollar amount or number of grants awarded, but rather by all the results achieved through year-round efforts to make positive changes in community conditions. Our partners providing important services to our friends and neighbors are focused on creating lasting change and moving the proverbial needle. As always, our robust volunteer-driven grant process ensures that donor dollars are invested in programming with measurable results and high levels of accountability.
I am both confident and energized by this evolving model whose impact will be maximized by everyone in the region working together. In addition to the organizations and individuals listed in this annual report that believe strongly in a commitment to their community, we need others to step up and make a generous gift or host a workplace campaign for United Way. Driven by the support from so many in our community, United Way Blackhawk Region will continue to play an important role in making our community stronger, better and more vibrant for all who live here.
OUR MISSION
Improving lives by mobilizing the
caring power of communities.
THERE IS A SUPERHERO
INSIDE ALL OF US, WE JUST NEED THE COURAGE
TO PUT ON THE CAPE.

EXCELLENCE IN ADVOCACY AWARD: MARTHA PEARSON
OUR LIVES BEGIN TO
END THE DAY WE BECOME
SILENT ABOUT THE
THINGS THAT MATTER.
-MLK
United Way Blackhawk Region has established the Excellence in Advocacy Award to recognize anindividual or program that strives to create meaningful change and demonstrates measurable progress toward improving and strengthening the community. The recipient of the Excellence in Advocacy Award is Martha Pearson.
Advocacy romanticized is a noble cause, but in practice it can be tireless work, not for the weary or the easily discouraged. To know Martha Pearson is to witness advocacy as an all CAPS verb.
In her role as Director of Transitions for Women, and Grant Manager for the YWCA Rock County, it can be said that she advocates for women and children but by saying so would be limiting as Martha’s passion for advocacy stretches far beyond the bounds of her day job. She is a champion advocate for music and the arts, for education, healthcare, equality, freedom of expression and personal growth.
Martha believes in the value of second chances, of extending a hand or goods or dollars but make no mistake, Her expectations are high. She has been teaching men to fish (or in her case most often women to fish) for decades. Her superpowers of knowledge, bravery and resilience energize us to use our own talents to create a greater good. She coaxes the cape from the closet where we find it fits squarely on our shoulders as well, and dares us to toss the mask aside, to raise our voices and march on.

DAY OF CARING RECAP
The Geraldine Hedberg Volunteer of the Year Award is presented to an individual for their outstanding volunteer service to United Way Blackhawk Region. This year’s deserving recipientis Mike O’Brien.
Mike O’Brien has always been willing to lend his time and expertise in support of United Way’s mission. In 2008, Mike served as co-chair of the local United Way community campaign. The following year, he was elected to the United Way Board of Directors and served with distinction through December 2016. Additionally, Mike has served as a valued member of the Campaign Cabinet, as past chairman of United Way Blackhawk Region’s Brand Strategy & Marketing Committee and the United Way Speaker’s Bureau.
Beyond the scope of our organization, Mike’s volunteerism stretches to infinity and beyond. He served as a member of the YMCA Board of Directors for ten years, chaired the Bert Blain Executive Heart Walk Challenge,
has held various volunteer roles in support of Forward Janesville, served two terms as chair of the parish council at St. John Vianney Church and chaired the parish’s fall festival. He and his wife Patty currently participate in the church’s marriage enrichment program. Throughout the years he has emceed many community events, lifting them up, up and away with his radio on-air voice, warm demeanor and natural charm.
We thank Mike O’Brien for his extraordinary commitment to volunteerism, a hallmark of the United Way mission. We are proud to honor him with the Geraldine Hedberg Volunteer of the Year Award.
The Boys and Girls Club had an energetic group from Data Dimensions to help with painting and organizing.
Volunteers braved the elements - heat, driving rain and stormy winds on the annual Day of Caring and brought more than their muscle to over 100 projects across the region.
Landscaping, painting, cleaning and construction jobs were no match for this force of volunteerism. Our Day of Caring translates into hundreds of hours of service and a value to the nonprofit organizations of more than $131,283.

The Live United Award is presented to a company that displays exceptional support to United Way through its workplace campaign and volunteer support. This year, we honor ABC Supply Co. inc.

In partnership with the City of Beloit, City of Janesville and Rock County, United Way Blackhawk Region launched a free, web-based, mobile-friendly volunteer connectivity platform, “Get Connected.”
Nonprofit organizations across the region can use this powerful tool to recruit, manage and retain support by creating meaningful relationships with volunteer and corporate supporters. User-friendly, interactive and as accessible as an internet connection, Get Connected matches people and passion to service.
To learn more about Get Connected or to arrange for a live demonstration, please visit LiveUnitedBR.org/GetConnected
Thanks to the generosity of our annual marketing sponsors, advertising and outreach efforts are expended separately, ensuring donor dollars are invested in the community.
