SCENARIO

You are working as a researcher and consultant for Mekong Research Company Ltd,

a marketing and research consultants company in Vietnam. Mekong has the

following research projects for its clients.

Project 1

Co.op Mart - Co.op Mart is becoming a popular brand to Ho Chi Minh City people

and whole country consumers, a reliable shopping place providing a wide range of

consumer products is one of your biggest customers. Currently, the number of local

distributors has increased drastically in light of the growth of the developing

economy.

In his position as the Director General, Mr. Hoa understands that Saigon Co-op has

to enforce and enhance their competitiveness. However, the analysis from different

angles in the meeting has showed that they are under various constraints. Therefore,

his concern in these days is how to survive and sustain growth in such a fierce

competition. Mr. Hoa approached your company to conduct a detail survey with their

customers about the services in the supermarket so that he can make necessary

improvements.

Project 2

Viettel Group is one of the world’s fastest growing telecom operators owning the

largest telecom network in Indochina featuring 56,000 GSM Stations (2G BTS and

3G Node B) and 200,000 km of fiber optical cable. Viettel’s global operations cover 6

countries with a total population of approximately 170 million people, including

Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Haiti, Mozambique and Peru. The Group provides

services under the “Viettel”, "Metfone", and "Unitel" brands. As of June 2011,

Viettel’s subscriber base in worldwide has reached around 63 million. Now, Viettel

managers would like your company to conduct a survey with their customers about

their company’s products and services in Saigon so that they can make necessary

improvements in their services future years.

Project 3

Saigon Commercial Bank was formerly established in June 1992 as Que Do

Commercial Joint Stock Bank under the Operating License issued by the Governor

of the State Bank of Vietnam and the Establishment License also in June 1992

issued by the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. On April 2003, the Bank was

officially changed its name as the Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB). Presently, SCB

is one of the effective commercial joint stock banks in the Vietnamese financial

system.

SCB believes in continuously innovates and diversifies its products and services,

ceaselessly develops and improves quality of service to serve customers best as

well as to provide them with more options. Every SCB’s employee themselves

always tries to enhance their knowledge and build up experiences to be confident to

well handle problems in all cases. The company always operates with the sense of

cooperation so that every employee could participate in working and enjoy the success.

Now SCB board approached your company to conduct a survey with their customers

about SCB products and services in their branches so that they can make necessary

improvements in the coming years.

Role

Choose any one project from the above stated scenarios. You are assigned to

prepare a market research report to Director of Marketing Department. The objective

of this report is to find out customer’s awareness of company’s products/services

and market demand. It may include the customers’ taste, preferences, trends,

purchasing behaviour, expectations and perceptions on your products and services.

The report should also include their demographic information so that the company

can utilize them in near future for marketing purposes.

You are required to plan, collect and analyse the data from primary and secondary

sources (Collection of data from customers, tourists and company staffs’) using

appropriate methodology and instrument. A range of suitable statistical methods,

tables and graphical representations should be applied in your data analysis. Provide

summaries and conclusions in business context for your findings.

NOTE:

Your report must include the following:

Demonstrate all the tasks and tested assessment criteria in the assignment

Indicate the type of business chosen and the specific service to be

investigated

Identify the different types of customers and customer care

Clearly state how many customers were surveyed

Indicate how information was gathered on customer opinion and problems

Devise questions to be used when questioning customers during the survey

Copy of questionnaire should accompany with report

Include an analysis of each of the questions

Include charts, diagrams, graphs etc.

Offer solutions to customer problems based on the information collected

The report should not exceed 3,000 words in length, be typed, word-

processed

Have a logical structure with clearly presented and explained sections

Have well-summarised findings of the investigation

Include conclusions and recommendations.

Grading Pass is achieved by meeting all the requirements defined in the assessment

Characteristics / Possible Evidence – the design of techniques (questionnaire, averages and dispersions as well as correlation) justified, a range of sources of information used and the selection of methods and techniques have been justified for the chosen business organisation.

Characteristics / Possible Evidence – report shows a logical structure with clearly presented data and explained sections related to chosen business problems. Present data using a range of methods e.g. tables, diagrammatical and graphical forms.

Characteristics / Possible Evidence – synthesis has been used to generate and justify valid conclusions to how well the chosen business organisation meets customers expectations and also the validity of results has been judged.

5. A fully typed up professionally presented report document. Use 12 point Arial

or Times New Roman script.

6. Your assignment should be word-processed and should not exceed 3,000 words in length.

7. Use the Harvard referencing system.

8. Exhibits/appendices are outside this limit.

9. The assignment should be not contain a bibliography – but should contain a

list of any references used in the assignment.
