Tauranga motorcycle trials rider Gabby Gundry has exceeded

expectations by making the top 10 in the New Zealand women’s

team’s debut at the Trial of Nations competition in France during

the weekend.

Along with team mate Stefanie Downes, from Christchurch, the two-member team performed strongly up against the three-rider line-ups from around the world, finishing a respectable ninth. Team totals were calcu-lated out of the two best of three scores, meaning every score had to be counted by the Kiwi women.

Overall a total of 22 countries took part,

with the top five professional nations com-peting in the elite Group A Class, while the remaining 17 nations, including Team New Zealand, fighting for Group B honours.

New Zealand had previously achieved a best placing of fifth in Group B, back in 1997, but this year New Zealand is fielding a younger and less-experienced development squad.

Despite the daunting task, Team New Zealand’s men finished an astounding 10th overall in the International Trophy (Group B) section of the competition.

Motorcycling New Zealand trial commis-sioner Jim Henderson says this is “a fantastic achievement by the Kiwi riders”.

“I have been in touch with the team and we here in New Zealand are all very proud of them, particularly the girls.”

Mount Maunganui car-lover Gary Raiti laughs about getting off the straight and narrow as a young

drag racing enthusiast.

“I had the misfortune of being a muscle car lunatic at the age of 19 – which is when I got my fi rst Mustang – a 1967 GT fastback and pretty much started racing from then on.”

Bitten by the drag racing bug he was a regular competitor at Meremere in a series of Mustangs – fi rst in his fastback, then a “big block” 1969 Mach 1 and a 1970 Boss 302.

“This was all up until my mid-20s, then I found out about circuit racing. I discov-ered happiness was not around the corner – it was the corner.”

For the substantial sums of money poured into cars and racing, Gary says it was over and done too quickly with drag racing: “Whereas, with circuit racing, it was the thrill of carrying corner speed,

braking… It’s just fascinating. So I’ve been into circuit racing pretty much ever since.”

Gary, who shifted from Auckland last year, now races a 1973 Falcon XA Coupe – a car he originally bought for his son Jason Cowan-Raiti in 2005 after being impressed by his talent.

“He is absolutely the most humblest person you will ever meet and a most gifted person behind the steering wheel,” says Gary. “He used to race my RS Cosworth and he was insane – I thought this kid is really talented so we ended up buying the coupe.”

In 2007, a 21-year-old Jason raced the car at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway in the Australian Muscle Car Masters. But, despite being a good meeting, ended up blowing the engine.

Gary started racing the Falcon in the Production Muscle Car series three years ago – having a good debut season fi nish-ing fourth overall. Last year he raced three rounds in the series and was ranked third overall at his last race.

“We are going exceptionally well, but then I bought my new house so it was put to the side. The car doesn’t wear out when you put it on axle stands.”

The season started at Hampton Downs last Sunday, but Gary decided to miss the race to focus on preparing the car for the Ford Muscle Car Club’s Taupo Track day this Sunday.

While Jason no longer races the Falcon – putting his energy instead into competi-tive woodchopping and 4WD jeep racing – Gary will be racing it mainly in the non-championship Historic Muscle Car Series with a few rounds in the Production Muscle Car Series.

“The historic series is just a better place for the car to run. Muscle car racing is quite epic, it’s going to be bigger than most things. Everyone likes seeing these old dinosaurs running around the track.

“There is no championship, people are just racing because they want to – basically the cars are the stars. My philosophy is the older I get the faster I was.”

Page 3Friday 13 September 2013

Turning the corner on racing

Always fancied yourself as a talent on the race track? This Sunday is the chance to silence your critics by showing off your

gift behind the wheel.Tauranga’s Ford Muscle Car Club is hosting its

annual meet at Taupo Motorsport Park, with drivers of all car makes competing in dual sprints on the closed track in a fun, social day.

Club member Gary Raiti, who will be competing at Taupo, describes the event as a great chance to drive your car fast in a controlled environment – without the risk of a speeding ticket.

Gary, who is racing his 1973 XA Falcon Coupe, will also be sharing some of his racing tips by offer-ing driver training to anyone interested.

“It’s effectively about getting them to be safe at speed. The key thing is smooth is fast – getting the car to do what it wants to do rather than doing the wrong apex on a corner and the car is protesting. We will go into all that.”

Club president Barry Gordon says the track day is a highlight on the calendar, offering all car lovers a chance to have some fun in their cars.

“So come down and join in on the fun. You could even come away with a trophy.”

Awards are given in Ford and non-Ford categories. Last year’s top Ford winner was Shirley Fletcher (Anglia V8), with Robert McBain (Falcon XE V8) second, and Bevin Dunlop (Fairmont Ghia EF Turbo) third. Top of the other’s category was Andrew Tarr (Silvia Turbo), then Leon Rogers (Commodore V8 SC), then John Endicott (BMW M3). The sportsperson of the day award was shared by Grant and Leslie Jacobs (Falcon TS50).

The club has use of the whole track for the event, with registrations open on the day. For details go to: www.fordmusclecars.org.nz By Hamish Carter By Hamish Carter

It’s always nice to jump into a brand new car. But it’s especially nice when

the car makes you feel like you’ve jumped into the future – and the

future feels friendly. BMW’s 2013 320d is remarkable for the

series. Normally, the 3 series is the under-stated small sibling of the 5 series, but this feels like a new era has begun.

Coombes Johnston BMW let me loose with a 320d xDrive Wagon, which turned out to be a totally stunning vehicle, sitting very proud with its M Sport package body refi nements.

This version of the car is unique, as it’s the fi rst of its kind in the BMW 3 series wagon range with the xDrive 4WD system. This positions the car head-to-head with the Audi A4 Quattro models – and I say – let the battle commence. The car comprises of a 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine, with eight-speed sports automatic transmission, mated to produce a very lively 135kw, but

only using an average fuel consumption of just 4.9 litre/100km. Inside, you are totally enveloped in a generous interior, with the M Sport leather seats surrounded by a clear, concise dashboard and simple to understand centre console controls. In pride of place at the centre dash is a large display for the Driv-ing Experience Control/Infotainment system for controlling everything from the radio to your offi ce.

Sync’ed to your smartphone via Bluetooth (an iPhone in this case), you get hands-free calling, access to your contacts and emails, or even to your music collection. The list of features in this system are too many to list here, but suffi ce to say, you can make this car intimately your own.

Out on the road, there’s no other way to describe it, other than being a BMW. If you’ve ever owned or driven a BMW, you’ll know what I mean. Superb comfort, ride quality – and a total sense of being in con-trol. The car has four driving modes, ECO Pro, Comfort, Sports and Sports Plus. By

default, the car starts you off in

comfort mode, which is a balance of power, fuel economy and ride quality.

In ECO Pro mode, BMW’s Effi cientDy-namics present what can only be described as a challenge. The better you drive, the car tells you how many extra km you’ll get from your remaining fuel – very addictive. Tap the button into sports mode however, and the car suddenly comes alive. You’d think Harry Potter had become a mechanic, and swapped the engine for you while you’re on the move.

The additional power is surprising, and puts a very wide grin on your face. For the brave, sports plus (M Sport package only) disables or reduces some of the cars safety features, such as traction control, if you’re looking for that extra bit of excitement.

Other standard options include cruise control, parking assist with rear view camera, and an automatic tailgate opener. Everything about the car just oozes luxury and quality with not a rattle or squeak from anywhere. And with such refi ned control over driver comfort, from the seat and steering, it’s impossible not to fi nd a position to match

your preference. Dual zone climate control ensures comfort for you and your passenger, with clever features such as a fogging sensor, which detects your windscreen fogging up; and the solar sensor measures the intensity and angle of the sun’s rays. Plus the system automatically adjusts the air conditioner’s performance to ensure a steady temperature is maintained. Built in satellite navigation is also a very useful standard feature, given that this vehicle is a natural touring car.

All in all, I am totally impressed by BMWs latest 3 series. The touring range starts at $77,800 for the 318d, up to $112,500 for the 335i or 330d xDrive. The M Sport pack-age is a must have, its additional upgrades in interior, exterior styling and sports extras make the car look and drive beautifully. For only $5500, it’s well worth it to have a truly outstanding vehicle. Our test model, the 320d xDrive, is priced at $84,400, plus it had the M Sport package.

If you’re looking for a luxury wagon, test drive this fi rst, second and third. You’ll fi nd it hard to walk away. By Jay Burston

It was only the great customer service Emma Webber-Dreadon got from Car Connexxion that prompted her to enter the dealership’s recent car giveaway.

Urged on by her son-in-law to enter the contest for Car Connexxion customers, Emma only decided to do so when she remembered how good Jono was to deal with: “He didn’t treat me like a silly woman with dumb questions”.

Earlier this month her name was drawn out of 500 entries in the Car Connexxion draw of former customers for a sporty 2005 Mazda Axela 20S.

Car Connexxion’s dealer Jono Allen rec-ognised her name as soon as she was drawn from the 500-odd entries, and is happy to see it go to “such a deserving local person”.

“I’ve sold over 2000 cars at Car Connexx-ion and I was so pleased to hear it was her,” says Jono, who organised the giveaway to a lucky customer to celebrate the dealership selling 10,000 cars.

More than 35 years on since her luck ran out, Emma’s good fortune came again when her name was drawn last week. The Maun-

gatapu grandmother and social work lecturer was so dumbstruck with the news the phone went silent and her granddaughter had to pick up the phone.

“I’m still on ‘cloud nine’ now,” Emma told Bay Driver when the newspaper caught up with her.

Emma believed her luck had run out more than 35 years ago when she decided not to place her weekly $1 bet on her favourite horse numbers. She hasn’t bet since – and despite her change in fortunes has no plans to start again.

“[back then] I would have won $73,000,” says Emma.

Emma, who combines her lecturing with the “tough job” of working as a part-time youth advocate in the youth court is taken by the Mazda, saying she always liked sporty cars.

“It’s just great. It means I’ve got a wonder-ful new car,” says Emma. Her main concern now is working out what she will do with her 1998 Honda Odyssey. “It’s done really well and I haven’t had any problems.”

A successful weekend of racing has seen Tauranga drivers’ notch up one second-placing and two third-positions in their classes in the Possum Bourne Memorial Rally.

In only his second race in the Extreme Rally Series all season, Ben Thomasen fi nished third-place, giving him sixth fastest time of all drivers competing in the South Auckland rally on the day.

In the 2WD series Tauranga drivers Phil Campbell and Dave Holder fi nished second and third respectively, while Rotorua driver Sloan Cox grabbed everyone’s attention by fi n-ishing third place overall in the South Auckland rally.

Phil continues to lead the 2WD series despite being beaten by arch-rival Josh Marston, who he has been see-sawing with, in placings, all season. With only one race remaining in the six-event New Zealand Rally Championship series – Rally Wairarapa on October 5 – Phil is leading by three points.

Ben, who has been forced to miss most rallies because of clashes racing his Polaris ATV in the Offroad series, is pleased with his result which is his best national rallying performance to date. But he believes he can still do better yet.

“Even though it was only a third it was still my best result in the rally car.

“If I hadn’t have been so slow in the morn-ing, I would like to think I could have been up another two or three places overall.”

Ben’s encouraging performance has him determined to commit to competing in a full Rally Extreme series, but he knows it will take a juggle to balance with the demands of his off-road racing.

“It is very diffi cult [competing in the two series]. But we’ve shown in the weekend we’ve got the speed – and if we do a bit more driving I’m sure we’ll go up to another level again.”

This weekend Ben and Phil are teaming up to race the Taupo 1000 Offroad Race in Ben’s ATV, sharing the driving duties in the two-day 1000km marathon race.

The Possum Bourne Rally was won by husband-and-wife team Richard and Sara Mason of Masterton, with the couple’s winning margin of 2min07sec over Nelsons Ben Hunt and Tony Rawstorn in second place. Despite a poor result for Geraldine’s Hayden Paddon (fi nishing fourth), he still holds the series lead with 100 points, ahead of Richard Mason on 95 and Ben Hunt on 91.
