President’s Perspective June 2015

We’re in the bowling business for a variety of reasons, whether it’s the satisfaction we see on our happy customers’ faces or the camaraderie we get with our league bowlers and our staff or perhaps it’s the the great things we can accomplish in our community. However, we all know this all comes with a price. At this time of the year, winter leagues are sweeping, summer leagues are flooring and June is never the best revenue month of the year. In some cases, by now extreme frustration has set in, not to mention burn-out, and a host of other annoyances such as feelings of being overwhelmed, not being able to accomplish everything that needs to be done in the center, unhappy employees, ungrateful customers, constantly putting out fires, working ridiculously long hours, dealing with equipment that doesn’t function properly, escalating operating ex-penses, incompetent employees, increased administrative and government red tape, ignorant bowlers complaining about lane conditions, employees who steal, price-cutting competitors, employees who show up late for work or not at all, demanding bosses, and dealing with mountains of paperwork. Those of us in the operational side of the business know exactly how demanding the job is. Long, long hours, dealing with EVERY little thing that comes up EVERY day. Just when things seem to be going smoothly, a customer slips and falls, a bartender disappears with $2,000, the lane machine breaks down 10 minutes before the start of leagues, the desk man calls in sick at 5:00 p.m. on Friday night, a Birthday Party of 20 people walks through the door and you don’t have them in the reservation book and you don’t have any extra lanes, only five bowlers show up for the start of a league when your coordinator expected 30, the health inspector shows up during your lunch rush, the Fire Marshall responds to a complaint that the side doors weren’t unlocked, triggering a full-blown inspection, your head mechanic tells you he needs an extra $3,000 for parts this month, your CPA reminds you you’ll never make it through the Summer without a short-term loan and your spouse reminds you that you’ve been neglecting the family. How do we deal with this stuff? WHY do we deal with this stuff? Believe it or not, it doesn’t always have to be this way. You will never eliminate ALL the unexpected crises that come up every day in bowling centers, but there are very specific ways in which you can re-duce them and even more specific ways in which you can deal with these problems in such a way that you don’t end up in the cardiac ward. That’s what Bowl Expo is for. If you can even find one or two ideas to help eliminate some of the above, then it will be worth it. If you can’t, you still get a trip to Vegas to forget your problems.

Executive Director Report

V O L U M E 1 9 , I S S U E 6

The squealing sound of the saw blades spinning, the mad thumps of hammers pounding and the smell of burning wood made me feel a little squeamish. It was almost as if they were operating on my own body. Fortunately, the patient was our 23-year-old synthetic lanes and not me. This month, Pinz has invested heavily into refurbishment and upgrade ad-ditions to our center and buildings on our property. I don’t know why I hadn’t paid attention to the condition of the paint on the inside and outside walls, the parking lot tarmac and even the carpet under our feet, but the owners sure did. And, even though they had a little life in them, it was agreed that in order to maintain the best level of facility and product offering, we needed to re-invest in our business. We’re about half-way through the projects, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We are determined to get these jobs done on-time and on-budget. Before we selected our final vendor, Pinz called every BCSC partner to learn more about their companies, their product and their work. Frankly, the BCSC partners did a fantastic job coming out to visit with Pinz, learning about our center’s goals and needs. Tremendous care and enthusi-asm, plus the best pricing due to Pinz’ BCSC membership and the vendors’ BCSC partnership, were welcomed during the negotiation stages. And, while we had to make a selection that was right for Pinz, I know that Pinz would have been in good hands from any of the companies that bid on our project. When considering the purchasing of any product, large or small, I encour-age all of our members to call on the BCSC Partners first. Be sure to give them a call and an opportunity to earn your business. As a BCSC member, and your BCSC Executive Director, I can confidently state that it Pays to be a BCSC Mem-ber. I know because Pinz saved thousands of dollars and we made one of our BCSC Partners very happy.

MEMBERSHIP TESTIMONIAL

Dave Osborn BCSC Member since 1983

A proprietor of Fountain Bowl – Dave has been a partner with BCSC for 32 years! Not only did Dave kindly welcome me on board, when I asked him how has being a partner with BCSC benefited him, he turned the question around and asked, “Why would a proprietor not be a partner with BCSC?” Dave became involved with BCSC in the early days of the association. He was a board member for 10 years and even served as president for two years. Dave has slowed down a bit on being active, but he’s still a solid member and believes in BCSC. For Dave, it’s a no brainer! He runs it down. Number 1, if you’re going to be in the bowl-ing business, you might as well be involved with others that are in same business you are in. Number 2, it’s to your benefit to work together with other proprietors. When Dave first got involved, he was working with Brunswick. As he went out on his own as a proprietor, the BCSC was very valuable. “They have your back, as opposed to being out there on your own.” As a matter of fact, Dave can’t imagine trying to do this business on his own instead of working together as part of the community of bowling proprietors. And again, he asked, “Why would someone not be a member?”

So, for those who have not taken the leap and joined BCSC, here’s something to consider, . . .

“Each of us is a product of all our experiences and all our interactions with other people.” - Colin Powell

BCSC is a solid community of successful proprietors who offer a wealth of experience and expertise; a great fit for all your needs. And, we’ve got your back!
