Stage 1
1. Behaviour dealt with by staff member present
or, if retrospectively, by the form/class teacher.
Child given a 10 minute ‘time out’ in the
classroom or playground (dependent on where
and when the incident takes place).
In the lunch hall, this will be on a designated
table and if on the playground, the child will stand
with the teacher/staff member on duty.
Stage 2: If this behaviour persists or
worsens…
The child will be sent to another classroom in another
year group for a further ‘time out’ for the remainder of
the lesson. If this takes place at break time, the child
will be have a ‘time out’ with the staff member on duty
for the remainder of the break. The staff member,
dealing with this should then communicate this to all
staff and record the incident.
Significant, serious and/or dangerous behaviour will
result in a straight ‘time out’. This is also the case with
swearing. This can and should be dealt with by the
member of staff at hand.
Significantly disrespectful, rude, aggressive or abusive
behaviour should be brought straight to either the
Deputy Head or the Headteacher.
When a child is hurt and/or been injured, the
teacher/member of staff dealing with the incident
should inform the child’s parents that day, ideally in
person or by phone.
Stage 3: Arrange Parent/Carer & Teacher
Meeting – when behaviour continues over time/a
few incidents
When a child receives several (3 or more) ‘time outs’,
over the period of a few weeks or a half-term, away
from their class or the playground, the teacher who
has given the majority of the ‘time outs’ or the
class/form teacher if it has varied, will arrange a
meeting with the child’s parents to discuss their child’s
behaviour. The teacher should prepare for this
meeting and have strategies and actions ready to put
in place and agree with the child’s parents.
Dealt with by Class/Form Teacher
Stage 4: If behaviour continues after
meeting and strategies put in place…
After this meeting, if the poor behaviour persists or
worsens, another meeting will be arranged with the
class/form teacher, the pre-prep or prep leader and
the child’s parents/carers. The child will then be
given a half-day ‘time out’ away from their lessons
and spend that time with another class in a different
year group, working on the work he/she has been
set.
Dealt with by Class Teacher and Pre-Prep/Prep
Leader
Stage 5: If behaviour persist after meeting
between prep/pre-prep leader and parents
If poor/inappropriate behaviour continues after this meeting,
a meeting will be arranged between the child’s
parents/carers and the deputy head. It may or may not be
suitable for the child to be present. The child will then have a
day of ‘time out’ with another class (in another year group).
This meeting will serve as a ‘final warning’ and strategies
and measures will be discussed.
Dealt with by Deputy Head
Stage 6: Meeting with Headteacher after
persistent/very serious poor behaviour.
If the behaviour continues, a meeting will be arranged
between the Headteacher and the child’s parents. This
meeting could result in an internal or external
exclusion, dependent on the Headteacher’s discretion
and judgement.
Dealt with by Headteacher
