Choosing the right school for your child is
important and it can be a confusing process.
if you think that your son or daughter would
thrive at Barney, the following information
will be of use.
transport to school
Barnard Castle School draws pupils from a wide
local catchment – from Tyneside to North Yorkshire
and from eastern Cumbria to Teesside. To support
our day pupil community, the School operates eight
bus routes from Monday to Saturday across the
region. Please check our website for further details
on available routes and times.
Admissions information
There are five key entry points to Barnard Castle
School – Pre-Prep, Year 3 Prep, Year 7 Senior School
(ie aged 11), Year 9 Senior School (ie aged 13) and
Sixth Form. It may sometimes be possible to admit
pupils into other year groups and it is always worth
contacting the School to check if a place is available.
Before applying we encourage families to meet
individually with Mr Alan Stevens, the Headmaster,
or Mrs Laura Turner, the Prep School Head, to
have a tour of the School’s facilities and see some
teaching with one of our pupils.
Our main Open Day is in Michaelmas Term
(October) during which prospective parents and
pupils have the opportunity to view our fantastic
facilities and meet with pupils and staff.
In addition we would be happy to arrange individual
‘Taster Days’ for prospective pupils at a mutually
convenient time. For boys and girls wishing
to experience boarding we are able to arrange
overnight or weekend stays at the School.
If you feel Barnard Castle School is the right school
for your child, the next step is to apply for a place.
To make an application please provide the
following:
• completed registration form
• £50 registration fee (non UK residents: £100)
• copies of your son/daughter’s birth certificate
and passport
• copy of their most recent school report
All prospective pupils are required to be able
to access our curriculum independently. In the
majority of cases this is assessed through sitting
our Entrance Examination. Entrance Day dates for
2016 are 23 January for year 3 -10 and 6 February
for Sixth Form. Children wishing to join the Prep
School in Years 3 to 6 are asked to undergo a short
series of tests in English, Mathematics and Non-
Verbal Reasoning skills. Overseas applicants may be
invited to a local assessment centre.
