Assignment title: Play with your food!

Vocational Context:As an artist and designer you need to develop your skills in material exploration and visual recording. This is the backbone to everything we do. Throughout this project you will experiment with a range of materials and techniques, and review how these can be used effectively within your own artwork.

Task 1 – Primary and Secondary Research

Primary and secondary research is the starting point of all projects, it’s your opportunity to explore the theme and gather some initial ideas.

Complete summer holiday project Create a food mind map, thinking about the different

areas of food you could look at. Create a Pinterest board with at least 30 images on it

relating to Food. Annotate your images to explain why you have chosen them.

Task 2 – London Trip

The trip to London is an opportunity for you to gather vital primary research. While you are there you need to:

Complete 4 drawings linked to this project Take at least 25 photographs, this can be of the food, people, presentation,

signage, surrounding area, whatever inspires you! Print all your photos and stick in your sketchbook or put them into a digital format

Annotate your photographs and drawings Which photograph is the most effective? Why? How have you captured texture and pattern in your photographs? How have you used colour in your photographs? Are they similar, different,

vibrant, dull, contrasting and complementary? How have you used line and tone within your drawings? How have you used pattern and texture in your drawings? Which drawing is the most effective? Why? How could you improve your drawings/photos? How can these drawings and photos help you to develop your project work?

Task 3 – Material Experiments

This project is designed to get you experimenting with new techniques and processes. Throughout a series of workshops you will be introduced to the techniques list below:

Digital photographs Photograms Chemigrams Drawing Painting Mono printing Heat press printing Screen printing Mixed-media Plastic etching Ceramics Laser cutting

Throughout all your material experiments you must document your process, taking photos of the stages of your work and any tools specialist equipment and machinery you have used and put these in your sketchbook.

Discuss the progress of your work so far, either through written annotations, video recordings or recorded discussions. Answer the following questions:

• What techniques, processes and materials have you used?• What is your opinion of the technique, process and material?• What are the strengths and weaknesses of this work?• How have you/could you develop it further?• How have you worked safely?• How have you used formal elements in the work?

(Colour/line/tone/texture/shape/pattern) • How will it impact on the development of your project and final piece?

Task 4 – Final Piece

For your final piece you need to create a piece of work for one of the following:

A 2D piece of work to be displayed on the wall of a supermarket café.

A design for an apron to be worn by supermarket staff. This must include a pattern and a logo.

A design for a shopping bag, this could be a drawing, photograph or mixed media image.

You do not have to make the apron or bag if you don’t want to, simply produce material samples and drawings for what they will look

like.

You need to:

Carry out research into existing products that are available. This might include looking on the internet and visiting local supermarkets.

Produce at least 3 possible designs for your final piece, consider and annotate your designs discussing your use of colour, composition, shape, scale, materials and the purpose or location of your product.

Produce your final piece

Document your process, taking photos of the stages of your work and any tools specialist equipment and machinery you have used and put these in your sketchbook.

Annotate your work. What is going well? What you are finding difficult? How you can improve your work?

Task 5 – Evaluation

It is important that you evaluate your work at the end of every project so that you can identify what you have done well and what you can improve for future projects.

Your evaluation must be at least 600 words

• How have you developed your ideas? • How have they changed throughout the project?• Why did you choose this colour and design? How

effective do you think they have been?• What are the strengths and weaknesses of this project?
