2016 HSPVA Creative Writing Middle School Workshop (See flyer

attached.) HSPVA will once again host the Middle School Creative Writing Workshop in 2016! This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, November 19th, 9 am to 2 pm. The workshop has sold out every year that we’ve held it, which says a lot for the quality of the event and its importance to the Houston community. It’s a truly remarkable workshop, where over 200 Houston-area middle-schoolers spend half a day developing their budding writing talents under the coaching of our very own creative writing students – we think that’s one reason for its success!

Gifted and Talented (GT Testing Request)

The deadline for students to turn in completed applications to be tested for the Gifted & Talented

Program will be October 31, 2016.

ALL applications (Application & Teacher Letter of Recommendation) will need to be complete before

any materials can be ordered for testing. In order to ensure that all students have an opportunity to

request testing, a copy of the application was sent home last week with each student at BCMA,

regardless of their GT status.

Before being dismissed to first period, ALL students MUST be in their assigned areas.

6th grade students report to the AUDITORIUM. No students are allowed to be in the

hallways, classrooms, or restrooms WITHOUT PERMISSION.

Monday, October 24: Students will compare the 3 main religious belief systems of the Middle East. Tuesday and Wednesday, October 25 & 26: Students will identify the four factors of production. Students will also read chapters 4 through 7 in Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. Thursday and Friday, October 27 & 28: Students will take District Snapshot #2.

Students will conquer, enhance, enrich, and extend their basic & required skills and knowledge in mathematics

by taking responsibility of their own learning with the aid of technology, peer mentoring and small group

instruction.

Lab Hours: Computers and tutoring will be available Tue / Thu, 7:30-8:00 A.M. in room 129.

No late arrivals allowed. Students will be picked up from side door at 7:30 and escorted to lab.

Two other labs are also available Thursday after school.

-Students will watch a video on the Earth and answer questions.

-Students will work in pairs/groups to identify the Earth’s interior layers by using a cross section Earth model.

Homework: Read textbook pages 273-277 and 279 all questions and vocab.

Friday 10/28/16

Lesson: Earth’s Layers

-Students will use the laptops to engage in an interactive 3D Earth model to identify and characterize the layers

of the Earth.

-Students will watch a video on Earth’s layers and answer questions.

-Students will work in pairs to color and label Earth layers (2D models).

Students will take a weekly quiz over the Earth’s formation and the Earth’s Layers.

Homework: Read text page 284-288 all questions and vocab.

Elective Homework: 3D Printing Project. Create a design for a product that you would like to make with a 3D

printer. Create a presentation using Powerpoint or Prezi to convince a company that they need to purchase this

product from you.

Please save your newspapers or pick one up at the store in the coming week. Please send your student to school with a newspaper for Art Class by Monday, October 10, 2016 to prepare for this project. Thanks! ITEM #2: In order to make sure that everyone is properly equipped for painting, please look into purchasing your child a BRUSH SET. A basic beginner’s student set can be purchased at Michael’s for a few dollars: $3.29 to be exact or purchase wherever is most convenient. We will use these brushes when we begin our papier mache project in Week 8. Please have these available by Monday, October 10, 2016.

This week in Math Lab w/Ms. Kerawala [email protected]

Students will master, enhance, enrich, and extend their basic & required skills and knowledge in mathematics

by taking responsibility of their learning with the aid of technology, peer mentoring and small group instruction.

Lab Hours: Computers and tutoring will be available Tue / Thu, 7:30-8:00 A.M. in room 129.

No late arrivals allowed. Students will be picked up from side door at 7:30 and escorted to lab.

Two other labs are also available Thursday after school from 4:15-5:15.

Supplies needed daily: Pencils, correcting pen, Composition Book, and Math Lab paper pocket folder with

brads filled with notebook paper to carry weekly Do Now sheet and their daily homework sheets.

Classwork this week: Students will work on their individualized topics, complete assignments, earn their piece

of the pie, and take quizzes in www.Aleks.com program. Students have approximately an hour in class daily to

work on weekly topic and time assignments. Anything not completed in class will be expected to be completed

at home. Week 4 of Cycle 2 assignments have been posted in www.ALEKS.com. Due to the nature of the

program and built in extended deadline with multiple attempts, the program will not allow extension for

assignments past the due dates. These assignments must be done in a timely manner. Due date for Topic

2.4 and Time 2.4 is Sunday, midnight 10/30/16. Student are expected to work at least two hours* and

complete at least 8 topics for this week *The program is self-pacing, and therefore some students may need to

work over two hours to master 8 topics. The assignments are as follows:

On a daily basis, students will continue to review skills needed for success in 7th grade math. We will continue

to work on STAAR math Test 2016. This week our focus will be on the Rational Numbers and Proportions.

Work must be shown clearly to receive credit on homework and classwork. Students must use composition

book to show their work they do on Aleks. Student must show work on at least 20 problems for each class

period.

Homework:

Daily Homework is provided and is due the following class period. Students must show their strategies and

work to receive credit on their homework assignments. Please note, no work = no credit

Pie piece Cycle 2: 25% of pie piece is due on 10/30/16.

Students will ask literal, interpretive, evaluative, and universal questions of text.

Students will monitor and adjust comprehension by using background knowledge; visualizing; rereading a portion aloud and generating questions. Students will make inferences about text and use textual evidence to support understanding. Students will summarize, paraphrase, and synthesize texts in ways that maintain meaning and logical order within and across texts. Students will determine the meaning of grade-level academic English words derived from Latin, Greek, or other linguistic roots and affixes.

Communication between parents, teachers, and students is highly encouraged at BCMA.
